Call me crazy, but if someone slandered my name in public and caused me to no longer be able to obtain employment or place of residence, would the slander-er be held liable? Seems like our government should cough up some sort of compensation to them if this were the case.

Another thing about Gitmo detainees, a few of them are actually innocent as deemed by the gov't. Thing is, they can't release them into the US, & nowhere else in the world wants them, including their home countries. This creates a problem.

It's complicated by our own laws & politics. When we took them prisoner, we took responsibility for them. Now that we figured out that the vast majority never were dangerous international terrorists at all, (witness he number released) we can't send some of them back to their native countries because they would likely be mistreated more than they are at Gitmo.

Politically, we can't resettle them here because we have to admit that they are innocent & that it was utterly wrong to imprison them in the first place.

America isn't ready for that. All too many people have been victimized by Bush Admin propaganda & fear.

It seems every other country has the same sentiment. But what do for the few that were later determined to not be guilty of terrorism, that have been cleared for release but can't? Other countries see this as not their problem but rather self inflicted wounds on our part. They're right. Some of them probably enjoy watching us stew in our own hypocrisy.

Some day, perhaps, America will be able to admit that we elected unscrupulous men who brazenly & shamelessly exploited a national tragedy to serve an agenda of military aggression abroad and elitist economic class warfare at home.

If we can't admit that we were ruthlessly exploited & overwhelmed by right wing authoritarian lies & propaganda we will remain highly vulnerable to more of the same in the future. Obviously we still are judging from some of the comments in this thread.

Gitmo is a lasting reminder of their true values as are our dead, wounded & disabled veterans & the bloody chaos of the Iraq we blasted the Hell out of & ripped to pieces.

So you think that if the US captures, detains for 10+ years, never holds a trial for, and even determines a mistake was made and the detained men should never have been held but still won't release them, that we shouldn't compensate them in some way? So if the government decided to arrest you for something you didn't do, never convict or even try or charge you, and then still refused to release you, you would think the government should not compensate you in any way and should continue to detain you?

That remark was not directed towards you. The posting history of pcgeek11 is all the evidence anybody needs to reach that conclusion & it's only 2 clicks away.

I was actually defending his intellectual capacity. We are all emotional creatures. Some of us are better than others at recognizing when we're being manipulated at that level. The world is full of people like that who are often very good even brilliant at what they do otherwise.

I think we agree at a fundamental level as to the shameful nature of the Gitmo prison. It was not created to further efforts against terrorism at all but rather for domestic political gain. It's a tribute to the power of propaganda that people would set aside the principles of the Constitution to embrace the idea at all.
