GITMO detainees to be sent to South Carolina?

Wednesday and Thursday, Pentagon officials are set to visit the consolidated Naval Brig in Charleston, South Carolina, in order to assess its viability of being converted into a facility to house dangerous terrorists currently locked up at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
The scouting visit is part of the process to form a plan to close Gitmo that will eventually be submitted to Congress. The officials are seeking a facility that can handle approximately 50 Gitmo detainees who are apparently too dangerous to be transferred anywhere else.

If you or anyone you love is a resident of South Carolina, you have about 17 months to pressure your lawmakers to rally against the move.
Luckily, several South Carolina Republicans have already begun the process of putting the kibosh on President Barack Obama’s plan to dump terrorists in their state.

I have my doubts this will pass Congress.

What a bunch of drama queens. I bet if you let those 50 GITMO detainees and 50 violent felons from a high-security prison square off in a prison yard, not a single GITMO detainee would walk away. Who cares where you lock them up?

They are sending them to South Carolina? Shit, they thought Guantanamo was bad...

:hmm:

We do Not want those pieces of shit in SC or in the USA. Why don't they either execute them, or leave them in Gitmo...

They'd fit in with SC pretty well. If it wasn't for the turbans it would be difficult to tell uneducated violent fundamentalists apart.

Once the reach US soil, the automatically receive all the rights and protections as guaranteed by the US Constitution... perhaps they need to be sent here on a slow leaky boat.

Heh. If they ever do get on American soil, it'll show that the govt can't make a case against most of them anywhere outside a kangaroo court. It'll show that the whole thing was just shamelessly skirting the Constitution for domestic political grandstanding.

Breakin' Terrarist Balls! always makes the primitives smile & gets their votes, every time.

Just pay China to build a jail and hold them there. They build everything else, they can build prisons for the US too.

I thought people from South Carolina were tough, with all of those military members and all of those military bases. Apparently not, they're scared of a few muslims.
Man up, bitches.

They can move them to Texas for all I care. Gitmo detainees haven't been convicted of terror crimes. The real terrorists, the ones that have been convicted, are already in US serving life sentences. Oh wait, let me guess, most of you didn't know that.

They do. But they dont care. They are on a holy war with muslims.

They also don't want to admit that the country was being totally propagandized in the wake of 9/11 for domestic political advantage & to facilitate the invasion of Iraq.

The prison at Gitmo was all about puffing up the threat & puffing their chests about how rough & tough the Bushistas were willing to be to deal with the much exaggerated menace.

There was a terrarist under every rock but Dubya & Dickie were there to pertekt us, unlike them terrarist coddlin' libruhls.

It worked beautifully. Hell, over a decade later righties still haven't figured it out.

And between the lack of crimes to charge them with and the fact that supermax/solitary confinement, I don't get why people act like Gitmo was every some amazing thing. They got treated better at Gitmo than Tsarniev ever will waiting to be executed.

Isn't a US Naval base considered sovereign US soil regardless of where in the world it's located?

Not quite. A military base is always under US jurisdiction, however. The Bushistas danced neatly around that by declaring the prisoners to be unlawful combatants under international law whose true status has yet to be ascertained by tribunals they never convened & by US law created in an ex post facto fashion in 2006.

Gitmo works because the host govt doesn't recognize US authority over the base so they can't object on the basis of the treaty they disowned long ago. We've only held onto it as a fuck you to the Cubans.

It's the usual right wing authoritarian catch22.
