Nobody can really see mine unless I have my shirt off. I didn't get it for other people, I got it for me. I don't care if anyone sees it.

Why not? Everyone expresses themselves in different ways.

hmm, upon further thought.

Some people express themselves by painting, poetry, books, music, and other art forms, protest, public office, education, and other pursuits.

I just realized it seems kind of silly to express yourself by having someone else express themselves on you. all it seems to me you are doing is saying this space for sale like a roadside billboard.

Yep. and don't do too many drugs. My buddy (of 10+ yrs) is an artist and he gave me this advice. He also gave me a great tattoo. I felt great in the morning. The process is more tiring than you'd think. . .

Worth it though.

Agreed. Take the drugs after you get it done. :)
Although, my last tattoo was on my foot and ankle and I prayed for something to ease the pain. Nothing like having your artist literally holding your foot and poking it with a needle. Repeatedly.

Also DO NOT go swimming for at least two weeks. My in-law's seem to think this is completely acceptable, but my artist tells me it is not.

Your in-laws are wrong. Silly in-laws!

Just dont get any Celtic or tribal tattooes. I hate those. So cliche' and most people dont even know what they mean. My tattoo is a Kokopeli which I designed myself. I let the artist keep the template because he liked it so much.

That doesn't make sense at all, unless you are getting some sort of logo or brand on yourself. I drew the art (crudely, but still drew it) that became my tattoo. It was an amalgam of different thigns that had meaning to me, but I do not have the ability, nor the flexibility, to tattoo myself, so I had it done by someone else.

Think of it like architecture. The architect designs it all and sketches it and whatnot, but the actual construction guys are who put it together. I though of the tattoo artist as the construction guy; he took my vision and brought it to fruition, using his tools and abilities.

most architects work off the design concept of a designer to create something that is manageable and within code.

still, my point is although you may have drawn the picture, crudely even, it is being interpreted and drawn permanently by someone else. so you are basically expressing yourself through someone elses expression. they are the artist, it is their work regardless if it is your idea, even by your analogy as the architect is usually named and credited although the design may have been through someone else.
back when my dad was living, he had a contractor friend who came up with the design for his house, and had my dad draw it up since design and reality don't usually work too well, and then they built it. my dad got credit for the design although it was the contractor.

i still think if you are using tattoos to express yourself, you're not saying much.
if you are getting them for other reasons, i see no problem with it, as it is your body afterall. it doesn't affect me in any way.
i just think it's silly to tell everyone you are doing it to express yourself.

I have no tattoos ane of the things I love about these threads are all the haters who come pouring in. Why is everybody so concerned with what someone else does with their body, particularly the OP? He's not getting some generic tattoo that he'll regret in three weeks. It sounds like he's put a lot of thought into this and wants something that is meaningful to him.

Sigh, people are so judgmental on the internet.

I have traditional japanese on my arm, other personal pieces on my neck and back. I had my first tattoo about 10 years ago right after high school and have wanted to get a sleeve (just on my right arm, personal preference) ever since. I now live in an area that if need be I could wear long sleeves to work year round.

If people want to talk shit, as per usual around here, then that is fine. Its personal preference. I do find it amusing seeing the people that troll and the people that have an open mind. Makes me happy that I am on this side of the fence.

Most of them would probably be too scared to say anything in real life or actually be one that oohs and aahs. Internet anonymity makes them all badasses though.

gosh, i guess if someone came up to you and said something about your tats, you'd want to beat them up. nice.

Maybe one day you'll understand that when you've observed people's behavior enough first hand and bring it up you're not saying you go around beating everyone up all the time or something.

no, i think that your response was not a observation on behavior but something else, trying to draw the ire out of others. being anonymous has it's benefits i guess.
i'll be sure though to work on my understanding of peoples behavior my next 40 years. I guess i must not have sharpened or honed that skill the first 40 doing it professionally.
Maybe i just misread what you said, and if i did, i apologize, but i have seen plenty of veiled attempts at intimidation through quotes similar to yours.

No, it just seems like you're trying to find something in what I said. Most people on the interent with anonymity wouldn't say anything in real life, whether you think that makes me a tough guy or not. It's okay though, I still love you and would never hurt you. :lips:
