8-5 is normal business hours for me...

Was that way at my last job. Now 7 to 3:30 but most of the time, it's 6 (or somewhere between 6-6:15) to 3:30 (sometimes longer).

So much better than the 8 to 5 shit. I love being home by 3:45 to 4:00 every day.

Dammit! Why do you have to pull this shit? Don't you know how fucking hard it is for him?

Not only does this poor lonely man have to drag his ass into work 30 FUCKING MINUTES earlier but he also has to live in a city that also has gay people. You know, diversity isn't so hot when it has to include gay people. How inexplicably horrible that is and how insensitive you are being about it.

one of my friends is in middle-management at an accounting firm... he got a talking to from his boss once ever being ~10 minutes late twice in a week.

I'd go nuts.

That's how it is at my job. You're expected to be there when you say you will be. They're very flexible if you ask in advance, but if you agreed to something as trivial as start time and can't manage to get to work on time, what does that say about everything else you do?

I guess it really depends on if you work solo or as part of a team. If other people are depending on you, you need to be there on time. If they need you for something that can't wait, being late it affecting more than just you.

I guess every company is different. Who the hell would want to come in at 9 though? Jesus.

I work 7:30 to 6 on weekdays. I literally cannot be late since the whole place would probably go to hell. It's a two man operation and I'm the only one who can leave the office to run errands and move fleet.

Working a 10.5hr day is getting pretty tiring though. I wouldn't mind it, if it was career building. I'm just biding my time until I can get a job in my field.
