Buddy of mine who drives a semi-truck cross country claims this is his bigest pet peeve, and when I took a road trip with him one time observed how he'd glady crawl up the back bumper of an eldery couple in their 95' Buick merging with 75mph traffic at 45mph and hitting them with his horn.

On roads with 2 lanes in each direction, truckers here often camp in the left lane just to avoid this problem. It's good policy, imo. If old people are in the right lane, keep your big 50 ton truck out of that particular lane even if it angers a lot of people. Angry people > dead

I just got back from a fairly long trip this weekend. Something else I noticed - why is it that every moron thinks that if they were driving faster than you and caught up to you in the left lane, that you're obligated to get out of their way??

QFT and those that see your blinker and then speed up and slow down just enough to prevent your merge. This is the same mentality of those that head straight for the left lane because they think they are entitled to it.

This is a summary of Minneapolis drivers. During traffic, the right lane is usually the fast lane because everyone moves over to the left as soon as they can.

"Stay right except to pass" is the courteous way of driving. Too bad there are those that don't give a fuck about anyone else and will "drive in whatever lane however fast they feel like." I guess being giant a-holes make them feel better about themselves.

I drive ~5mph over (assuming traffic allows it). I drive in the right lane except to pass or if I need to be in the left for an upcoming exist. People come up behind me, I move over and let them pass and move back if I need to pass someone. If someone is weaving in and out at 90mph, then I prefer them to get as far away from me as possible, because it's only a matter of time before they kill themselves and take down a few innocent people with them.

they should install speed cameras everywhere, when I visited my pops in Prescott AZ he told me they have them littered all up and down the highway there. And said if you get clocked you'll get a ticket in the mail, while I was driving around I only remember 1 time having a car pass me while I was doing the speed limit. In Edmonton they put photo radar shit all over the place. The intention was that speeders would get ass raped and it would raise a lot of money that is badly needed at this time. Sadly that didn't happen. People know which intersections have cameras and they can spot photo radar vans from a mile away because they are always illegally parked. Now the city says fine revenue is way down because not as many people are breaking the law as expected

I wish it was legal to run people off the road if they are hogging the left lane but not passing. Especially when they are driving the exact same speed as the lane to the right of them.

That's the EXACT thing that happened to me a few days ago on I-75 in Ocala,a heavy rain started coming down, most folks just slowed to around 50 , guy in front of me puts on his hazards and STOPS in front of me without pulling over, I had to swerve without looking into the center lane to avoid hitting him, luckily there was no one in that spot at the time as I had no time to check..

But let's stop thinking about "me, me, me" for a second. The biggest issue is you think all things out there are just. The reason for the speed limit in the first place was to help save fuel during the crisis. Now you have straightaway highways (may as well be a 3-lane dragstrip) at 50mph limits which happen to make a lot of revenue for a city. Yes, people should follow rules, but not all rules are there for good reason.

There are far more assholes on the road who tailgate you expecting you to pull over (when you have drivers immediately in front of you) than there actually are slow drivers in the left lane. That there is other relevant information is completely lost on them.

This past weekend, I moved out of the left lane zero times when there were cars ahead of me. Four times, assholes zoomed by the string of cars (on the right) and squeezed in front of another car 3 or 4 cars ahead of me, causing they guy who was cut in front of to slam on his brakes (needlessly, and it happened every time), then a chain reaction of people slamming on the brakes. Without exception over 70 miles of thruway, I passed every one of those guys who had passed me on the right (as soon as the slow idiot 10 cars ahead was finally out of the way.) Final tally: ZERO of the idiots who tailgated me and showed intention of wanting me to move over to pass me ever did actually pass me once it was clear enough in the right lane to move over and go the speed I was comfortable with. They all traveled at the same speed or slower.

Oddly, when I got off the NY thruway and started traveling on I-81, a LOT of traffic was traveling faster than me, so I hung out in the right lane, except to pass. And, when I did pass someone, if someone was catching up to me, I sped up to complete the pass and not hinder the faster moving traffic. (That section was crawling with troopers the two prior weekends; but there was a complete absence of troopers that evening - I don't know how everyone else on the road seemed to know that.)

Maybe I'm lucky but in my experience there's an equal amount of tailgaters and slow pokes. Really, not that many of either. But while I agree that it's frustrating being tailgated when you can't go any faster, that's not my criticism.

You said you wanted to see if anyone took the bait, which I find unnecessary. You could have just as easily made your point without baiting anyone.

Oh, and not like it's pertinent to the thread anymore, but the proposed law isn't going to happen. Police were merely tossing the idea out there, and it sounds like local governments want some studies or something before going ahead with it, apparently more effort than it's worth.

a) You were following too close. ALL evasive maneuvers can be avoided by maintaining an adequate gap between vehicles.

b) It's possible to know what is around your own vehicle at all times by making quick consistent mirror checks.

I don't think I would go that far. Someone tailgates me every once in awhile, but I see people blocking the left lane every. single. day.

Back in the early 2000s, I hauled loads of Douglas fir bark (bark-o-mulch) 150 miles one way, all on I-5, to a retailer. On I-5, cars are limited to 65 mph, and trucks are limited to 55mph. I set cruise to 55mph and was able to simply ride in the right lane with almost no stress the entire way. Other than the occasional lane change for oncoming traffic (it's easy to cancel cruise long enough to allow the oncoming vehicle to merge in front of me without changing lanes), it was a nice evening drive. Same thing coming back, there was just no load in the trailer, so braking and acceleration was that much easier. GVW was ~96,500 lbs. Empty weight was ~31,000 lbs.
