Get out of the left lane

Proposed change: Speed up or move over

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- It can be infuriating driving behind a car going well below the speed limit.

Montgomery County is asking the Maryland General Assembly to amend a driving law and require drivers in the left lane to yield to faster cars, even if the faster car is over the speed limit.

Left-lane drivers on controlled access highways, which are typically those with entrance and exit ramps, would be required to pull to the right if a car was approaching from behind.

But some Councilmembers oppose the idea, which The Gazette reports has the support of County Executive Ike Leggett and Montgomery County Police.

"This is a free pass for people driving over the speed limit. That's not good policy," said Councilmember George Leventhal.

It is not clear which roads would be affected.
I certainly like the concept, but I'm not sure how it'd be enforced. My best guess is it would be similar to speeding; technically illegal but generally the law looks the other way, only pulling you over in extreme instances (driving 90 in a 55 or now driving 40 in the fast lane).

Many states have signs stating for slower traffic to merge right. Slow ass people not doing the speed limit are more dangerous than speeding people IMO.

The speed limits are too low.
Increase highway speeds by 10mph and left laners would be less likely to stay in the left lane.

And yes, Ohio has signs all over the place stating "SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT".
I have actually timed it well enough that I have pointed at the sign, right after passing someone on the right 🙂

I think busy onramps, offramps should require a 1 mile extra lane for the on/off ramp leading up to them. Half of the reason I see people get over is to be courteous to drivers entering and exiting the Interstate so they don't get backed up.

Most states don't have the budget though for that kind of project, so maybe in the far off future they might start designing roads that way.

Where is this utopia that you currently live where they don't pull you over unless you're doing 90mph? I want to move there. In south Texas you will get popped for doing 5mph over the limit. God help you if you're hauling ass on the wide open interstate and blast past a state trooper at 90+ mph. You will go to jail. I think it sucks, but that's the way it is.

When I saw the title of this thread, I immediately thought "Maryland." 270 and I70 north from DC to Hagerstown is notoriously bad for left lane campers, for whatever reason. There are a pair hills that widen to 3 lanes going up the mountains, I routinely pass 8-10 cars in a row by speeding up the right most lane.

In Kentucky it usually reads "KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS". I've always thought this would make a wonderful bumper sticker.

Here is Arizona, I-10 recently went to six lanes (3 lanes each direction) most of the way from Tucson to Phoenix. I am in the right lane most of the time. A good three quarters of the people I pass are putt-ing along in the left two lanes treating the right lane like a shoulder. So I get to go real fast in the right lane. For folks who don't like being passed on the right the rule is simple: If you are being passed on the right, you are too far left.

Living in Michigan, which has a reputation for having insanely fast drivers, 10mph over won't get the attention of a State Trooper. You need to be driving fast enough so the pressure wave from your vehicle damages the paint on the Trooper's squad car to be pulled over.

Detroit and Chicago drivers drive like 'Mad Max' incarnate, and left lane campers risk their life obstructing traffic - no need for the threat of citations. NASCAR drivers learned 'bump-drafting' from veteran Loop drivers at rush hour.

What I would like to see is a law requring vehicles entering onto an expressway (that aren't trucks or service vehicles) must merge within a reasonable speed of existing traffic. Frankly I find elderly drivers a far bigger danger than left lane campers in this respect, and pulling onto an expressway where cars are moving at an average of 75mph at 40mp causes far more pile-ups.

Buddy of mine who drives a semi-truck cross country claims this is his bigest pet peeve, and when I took a road trip with him one time observed how he'd glady crawl up the back bumper of an eldery couple in their 95' Buick merging with 75mph traffic at 45mph and hitting them with his horn.

It's the law here in Michigan but it hasn't helped at all and I never see it enforced. It is pretty much guaranteed that I will pass at least 1 person on the right on my way to work and about 5 on the way home (God I hate US23)

Every time I'm coming back to the suburbs from Chicago on 55, I go 5 under. I hate leaving the city & am in no rush to get home. So blow me.

they should install speed cameras everywhere, when I visited my pops in Prescott AZ he told me they have them littered all up and down the highway there. And said if you get clocked you'll get a ticket in the mail, while I was driving around I only remember 1 time having a car pass me while I was doing the speed limit. The speed limit's the speed limit, I don't understand why people think since they believe 65 is too low they can break it. Driving on the highway out there was actually pretty relaxing and nobody was driving crazy.

I hope you die.

Who will fall for the classic Quebert "against what everyone else in the thread says" troll...

Only time will tell.

This is a bullshit policy.

I'll continue to do my 10-15mph over the speed limit in the left lane, and pull to the right if a car slowly creeps up on me. When I see a car with his left directional on doing 90+ that quickly pulls up behind me and tails me, I will stick with MY "policy" of slowing down to the speed limit until he passes me on the right.

I've never sped in my life, and I get sick of tail gaters and fuckers who flip me off because I chose to go the speed limit in the middle lane. I don't break laws and speeding's breaking the law. Fuck people who speed. I was posting a story about a town where anyone who speeds gets a ticket in the mail. This should be everywhere, AZ's apparently way ahead of the curve here.

Signs says minimum speed 45, that is where the cruise gets set to save gas.

Awesome when have huge conga line of traffic behind flashing lights and honking horns.
