The one thing the US does not need, is speed cameras. We already have Big Brother watching most of what you do, with traffic cameras just about everywhere. Same for red light cameras in a lot of areas. However, I do think in time, we will have speed cameras, just hopefully not in the next 20 years or so. And tickets from those types of cameras, hopefully, are just fines only and no points, and hopefully, do not go against your insurance rates. Myself, here in NJ, I stay about 10-12MPH over posted speed on main roads and much closer to posted in little towns, especially if I don't know the area. For NJ 1MPH - 14MPH is a 2 points ticket. 15MPH - 29MPH, is a 4 pointer. (you don't want that or the next range 30MPH or more which is a 5 point ticket)

Wat? I have no idea what that means since you didn't explain it in your post.

Anyway - the US is really bad at this. I don't know if it is an entitlement thing or what (Fuck everyone else I am driving where I want to drive) I drove in Ireland for a while and never had to pass someone on the...well, it's the left there but you get the idea. Everyone got over immediately - even if they were very slowly passing someone. They slowed down a tad more - let a couple of faster cars pass and then tried again

Why we can't do this I have no idea. If there is a long line of cars behind you and open road ahead of you get over faster - either speed up or slow down and let the cars pass

most of the people locked in the left lane doing the speed limit are on their stupid fscking cell phones most of the time to even notice that they are being tailgated/holding up 20 cars behind them on a two-lane road with grandpa neck and neck doing the speed limit in the right lane.

so for all you douchebags yapping on your phone, oblivious to anything on the road, this one's for you:

Around here where? Rush hour in Palm Beach and south of it, it's usually a slow crawl due to people in each lane going 45-55 (it's 65mph posted) and nailing their brakes for no reason causing the rest of the chain to hit their brakes until traffic literally stops for 2-3 secs.

Whoops, should have specified – Philadelphia metro area.

In Kentucky it usually reads "KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS". I've always thought this would make a wonderful bumper sticker.

This is the way it should be phrased, and I believe it is the law in NJ.

"Slower traffic keep right" implies that a guy who is driving 75 mph passing a line of 65 mph cars should squeeze into that line so the guy behind him who wants to pass everyone at 90 mph can do so. If you are passing or overtaking someone, you are just as entitled to the left lane as someone who wants to pass faster.

People think it's crazy to require cars to drive in the right lane except when passing, because they think that would force all traffic into the right lane leaving the other lanes virtually unused. That is not what happens if everyone drives properly. When there are enough cars on the road to essentially fill the right lane, then everyone who drives in the left lane will always be passing someone. I move over to the right if there is a long gap, even if I know I'm going to overtake the next car in line.

uh, no. passing is done on the left. thanks for being a rolling roadblock
If I'm in the far left lane I'll constantly have to speed up/slow down, or switch lanes for everyone getting on the highway.
Middle lane & I hit cruise all the way home.
9P-5A, not much traffic on the roads, you have plenty of space to go around me.

Hit cruise, IF merging traffic is coming in your way then move leftt to pass and then get back in the right lane. Its not that hard to move lanes every once in a while.

Yes, morons feel entitled to be wrong because they feel in the social right by obeying the posted speed limit. Most of the time driving safe and reasonable with the flow of traffic is best. Sometimes the flow of traffic does get too fast like in the morning rush hour so your going to have to buck up and learn how to drive in the slow lane and accommodate mergers.

People think slower is always better as if going slower reduces your risk and allows you to have the reflexes of a cow and still be a good driver. It's really the exact opposite, it doesn't matter if its 10mph slower or 10mph faster, the difference in speed is what causes accidents so if you can't match the speed of traffic, especially considering those behind you then you are a hazard to the road, the law just doesn't see it this way. No accidents in 8 years.

Slow mergers piss me off more than slow left lane drivers. I've even seen people come to a complete stop at the end of a onramp even though they have a 200 meter merge lane to use.

We both said we only do this to the assholes that are driving like maniacs and tailgating us insisting on getting by, the same asshats that do what you said in your post that you don't do.

Problem is most of the time these people are merely speeding and not driving like a maniac. They end up tailgating you because you aren't getting the idea that it's much safer to move over to the right so that they don't have to pass on it.

Because it pisses these assholes off, and still stays legal, yet according to the policy proposed in the OP that may no longer be an option, which is why I said in my OP this is bullshit. What is the point of a speed limit if they are basically stating that you need to yield for people breaking it?

First, it's actually proven most that go 10mph over the limit end up in few accidents. It's majorly dangerous to go 10MPH under the flow of traffic due to most people having problems judging objects in motion that come to a stop or slow. Hence the third brake light.

By you blocking these people's way, you are creating more a danger on the road, especially when 'road rage' kicks in (and those that block lanes are equally affected when 'one' gets by). Once that happens people make poor decisions being too focused on who is front or behind them.

I agree, but I still don't mind annoying jackasses that think they can do 90+ everywhere they go, regardless of the reason, they can go around me if they are in such a hurry.

I usually do and then send that person off the roadway if they were trying to block me. They usually just pull their happy ass on to the shoulder and wait for me to get some distance. God forbid I see them again doing it.

The worst part about people who drive slow in mid/left lanes, is that they block people in the right lane from moving over when others are trying to merge, traffic in left lane should always be moving faster than right lane, to allow smooth flow of traffic. I hate when I am stuck in the right lane, and can't move over to let people merge, because some jackass is in the left lane doing the same speed, this is the cause of a LOT of traffic jams.

The speed limits are too low.
Increase highway speeds by 10mph and left laners would be less likely to stay in the left lane.

And yes, Ohio has signs all over the place stating "SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT".
I have actually timed it well enough that I have pointed at the sign, right after passing someone on the right :)

people will still go faster than the speed limit. won't change anything other than make accidents far more serious

Speeding doesn't cause many accidents in reality. It's those driving too slow and reckless drivers that weave in and out.

QFT and those that see your blinker and then speed up and slow down just enough to prevent your merge. This is the same mentality of those that head straight for the left lane because they think they are entitled to it.

I just got back from a fairly long trip this weekend. Something else I noticed - why is it that every moron thinks that if they were driving faster than you and caught up to you in the left lane, that you're obligated to get out of their way??

Depends, was there anyone in front of you?

I think busy onramps, offramps should require a 1 mile extra lane for the on/off ramp leading up to them. Half of the reason I see people get over is to be courteous to drivers entering and exiting the Interstate so they don't get backed up.

Most states don't have the budget though for that kind of project, so maybe in the far off future they might start designing roads that way.

One of my favorite things about driving:

Using the on-ramp and merging into the lane of traffic AT my desired speed. Reach 70mph (our interstate speed limit), set cruise, engage signal, move to the left. Love it.

Well, maybe because that's what a considerate, non-douche would do.

I wish it was legal to run people off the road if they are hogging the left lane but not passing. Especially when they are driving the exact same speed as the lane to the right of them.
