Swiss officials countered that, as a former head of state, Bush would be protected with a level of diplomatic immunity, and Keren Hayesod, the group that had invited Bush, said the court actions against the former president did not play into the decision to go forward with the dinner without him.

"We didn't want to put people and property in Geneva at risk. The gala is maintained but George Bush will not take part," the group's lawyer, Robert Equey told the Tribune de Geneve. "The (criminal) complaints did not weigh in the decision."

He noted protests against the G8 summit just across the border in France in 2003 that ended up rampaging through Geneva.

I don't see how that ends up being a party pooper. There's a lot of animosity over what Bush and his crew did to our country, some good, and yes from the view of the very rich, he is a saint, like how Reagan is viewed the same way by them. But for those that had to endure his time in office, watching him kowtow and lick the boots of the very rich at the expense of the rest of the nation....well, anything negative that happens to him can rightly be viewed as payback justice for his sins.

Bush was chosen to be, by and large, one of the worst presidents ever elected to office because he in part ran the country into the ground from supporting and encouraging the ideology that did it, along with his wartime policies that saw a huge growth in hatred for our nation and the blossoming of more terrorist organizations under his watch. IMO, he deserves much worse than just suffering the embarrassment from being forced to skip out on a speech in Switzerland.

The world watched as his policies made things worse for them from what they saw as injustices to humanity done on his part. There's blood on his hands that will never wash off, not to mention the huge amount of blood and death stained $$$ (via our defender's lives and limbs) that was made by his profiteering carpet-bagging friends going over to "support" the troops in the wars he started.

I'm a firm believer in the old adage of "What goes around comes around....with a vengeance." That belief keeps me from making bad decisions that I will regret. Bush on the other hand, with the backing of near infinite power from the very rich and the insularity and protection his high office gave him, allowed him a free hand at pursuing the agenda of the rich and powerful. And boy oh boy did he ever, and all of the damage he caused was felt by everyone except those special few that he represented. They profited immensely from the all-encompassing descretionary powers afforded to him along with the powers he gave himself by having his personal friend and AG bend scew and/or ignore any law that got in their way.

I really can't see how he can live with himself considering the scope of the damage he caused.

You gained respect because he has average reflexes? At the distance the shoe thrower was at, even my grandmother could have dodged that. And he didn't even really dodge the second one, just stood there while it missed it's mark.
 
I wonder if the forum's bleeding hearts would hold off judgment of Bush like they want people to hold off judgment of Manning were Bush to be arrested.

judgement is not being held on manning, he is being mentally destroyed before even standing trial

So, you don't judge a president by his policies and positions, but by his ability to dodge a shoe. That says something about you.

BTW, it was a good throw.

My opinion is Manning and Bush committed crimes (with far different harms/benefits and motives). Legally, I want both to have the presumption of innocence.

Hmmm, lots of similarities between the two. Interesting. The big difference is the scope of damage each allegedly caused. Bush wins by a landslide. In fact comparing the two damage-wise is practically incomparible, WRT the sum total of lives that were negatively affected by their actions.

This is why our justice system's future is in doubt. Many people so willingly throw out presumption of innocence and the rights of the accused in the name of being "tough on crime". It really is a tragedy what is happening to Manning. He needs to be treated like a proper human being and given his fair day in court.

Really? I don't think there's many people saying we should throw out presumption of innocence. That's a straw man that keeps being repeated on this forum.

Although I'm not sure Manning deserves highest-level security, he obviously has mental issues and is on death watch. Trying to blame the military for that is ridiculous.
