Reuters) - Former U.S. President George W. Bush has cancelled a visit to Switzerland, where he was to address a Jewish charity gala, due to the risk of legal action against him for alleged torture, rights groups said on Saturday.

Bush was to be the keynote speaker at Keren Hayesod's annual dinner on Feb. 12 in Geneva. But pressure has been building on the Swiss government to arrest him and open a criminal investigation if he enters the Alpine country.

Criminal complaints against Bush alleging torture have been lodged in Geneva, court officials say.

Plane ticket to Switzerland: $1200
Steak dinner at Keren Hayesod's annual dinner: $180
Being arrested and tried for war crimes: PRICELESS!

Shouldn't we be doing similar things in the USA? The Swiss government has been actively involved with their country's financial terrorist institutions. In addition, they have elements of white supremacist groups in their government which should also classify as terrorists.

Perfect. Then we have an excuse to invade Switzerland, enslave the men and use the women as our sex toys.

Since a sin is a sin, why not do both. Try GWB as an international war criminal and try those suspected of being guilty Swiss bankers for fraud.

In my mind, such a solution would be a win win win for the USA, Switzerland, and the entire world. Where does this seeming CanOWorms implied question coming from? Its not a matter of doing one or the other but not both when doing both is the desired solution.

Not sure why our Justice Department hasn't pursued criminal charges against bubba.

I assume Switzerland will remain neutral and impartial and will arrest any international businessman / leader that is suspected of crimes against humanity? Must not get many visitors from the royal families of certain kingdoms / dictatorships...

For the record, I am no fan of Bush.

Politics, corruption (think Republicans would trump charges to arrest Democrats? They impeached Clinton as 'revenge' for Nixon, voted down good justices as 'revenge' for Bork.)

hal2kilo may be saying what I wish, but I am not holding my breath in will happen in the USA in the near term future.

But still, as far as I am concerned priceless. A few years back we were having threads on P&N that GWB&co would never face war crime charges, and now in 2011, ole GWB himself has to watch where he travels. What about all GWB's cronies, Dumsfeld, Hadley, very sleezy Rice, its a long list, but ole lonesome George didn't commit all those war crimes by himself. What about all GWB's cronies, who for one reason or another may be in some foreign country, and suddenly find themselves facing a warrant for their arrest and detention, until they can legally extruded, by due process of law, to face the legal charges of some internationally recognized tribunal?

So in that sense, not only has GWB's world gotten smaller, so has the world of all of his cronies. Long odds, one of the cronies will be the first to face the music and feel the handcuff's around their wrists.

Ya, it would be awesome if more countries followed suit. Not as good as a Conviction, but a statement and limit to his freedom nonetheless.

You left out some:

Congress, Senate .... Repubs and Dems...

Um ... they're a country with mandatory military service for men. They also have one of the most perfect natural barriers as a border for their country. In addition they control a good amount of the money, and the US isn't more popular than money to other countries. So in truth, I think they'd kick our ass if we tried to invade.

Those of us in the general public who supported the war are just as complicit in it. That includes many posters here, including myself.

I'm no fan of Bush, but at this point putting him before a war crimes tribunal would probably do more harm than good.

In 20 years he will be Saint Bush like Reagan.

Unfortunately I think that this is correct. The whitewashing of his image began in earnest years ago. Reagan for all the good he did in the US was a real summbitch when it came to a lot of his policies towards the middle class and foreign policy. Yet, many here cream their pants when his legacy is invoked, as if he were the second coming of Jesus or something. 😵
