This is why our justice system's future is in doubt. Many people so willingly throw out presumption of innocence and the rights of the accused in the name of being "tough on crime". It really is a tragedy what is happening to Manning. He needs to be treated like a proper human being and given his fair day in court.

How the hell do you get your objection from my post?

I agree with your post, unless you're saying there isn't strong evidence for forming an opinion - including a reported confession - that he's guilty of leaking to someone.

An opinion outside the legal system, where I want him to be treated 'like a porper human being' - I object to his reported treatment - and given a fair day in court.

And I lean towards a far lighter sentence than most seem to here. Not 'tough on crime'.

You seem to have rushed and grabbed my post without bothering to see what it said to make your point. I'm against the same 'tough on crime' excesses.

So why hasn't Obama done anything?

Apparently they won't do anything because the Dems are afraid of offending the Republicans and are afraid of retribution. Considering that the Dems had control of Congress and the Presidency that's obviously a threat. In fact it's so scary that not only have they tolerated Bush's policies, but in fact expanded on them. That's why they never tried to push for insurance reform.

No, I grabbed your post because you were referring to something similar. I was actually agreeing with you.

It would really set a bad precident to go after a former US president with war crime charges. This would open up a whole can of worms, that would be best left closed.

Unfortunately I think that this is correct. The whitewashing of his image began in earnest years ago. Reagan for all the good he did in the US was a real summbitch when it came to a lot of his policies towards the middle class and foreign policy. Yet, many here cream their pants when his legacy is invoked, as if he were the second coming of Jesus or something. 😵

Yup. The consensus seems to be, that as Iraq heads towards a future as a successful democracy, history will vindicate George W. Bush. He kept the nation safe in the wake of 9/11, he dealt with every crisis that confronted him in an acceptable manner and he did it all with a strong front to the nation. Post-presidency, he's continued to greet troops returning from overseas in airports across the country.

We're a nation of laws. When the President and most of his Cabinet have a total disregard for the law there will end up being no law in the land.

Iraq a successful democracy - possibly.
History vindicating George Bush - only if people like you become historians.
Kept us safe after 9/11 - It's getting deep in here and my boots aren't tall enough. I guess some people can believe anything.

What law? US law? International law? I have yet to see any Federal indictments from US courts.

Wouldnt it be funny if the swiss started their own rendition program and kidnapped mr bush and had him treated just the same way he says is legal....

Shouldn't we be doing similar things in the USA? The Swiss government has been actively involved with their country's financial terrorist institutions. In addition, they have elements of white supremacist groups in their government which should also classify as terrorists.

And this surprises anyone?

An independent report commissioned by the Swiss government said the country knowingly contributed to the Holocaust and cooperated with Nazi Germany during World War II. The 600-page report said Switzerland turned away thousands of Jewish refugees during the war, sending them back to Germany where the Swiss knew that Jews faced death in Nazi concentration camps.

After the war, the report said, the Swiss government, museums, banks and businesses did not return assets to their right owners, many of whom were victims of the Nazis. Historians from Switzerland, the United States, Israel and Poland were part of a nine-member panel that spent five years compiling the report.

The executive vice president of the World Jewish Congress (Elan Steinberg) said the report is a devastating historical and moral indictment that vindicates the testimonies of Holocaust victims and their heirs. The Swiss government apologized for its refugee policy in 1995 and is trying to settle claims against its banks made by Holocaust victims.

Not to mention the fact that in a documentary I watched outlined how all the transport of Jewish prisoners from France where shipped via rail through Switzerland, and the Swiss did nothing to stop this act. Switzerland also geared up their war production and supplied Nazi Germany with weapons which helped prolong the war since the Nazi war production had been hammered by Allied bombing.

In my opinion, General Omar Bradley had little option in "accidently" bombing Swiss factories during World War II.

Hard to be a neutral nation in a sea of adversarial ones, as any attempt toward behaving with neutrality to one nation can be seen as being biased against everyone else.

can't we just compromise and give them Cheney, Rove, and probably Rumsfeld?

I find them to be far more culpable than Bush in all this.

and in all honesty, as much as i despise the man, this un-representative group capturing a former POTUS would not only tick me the fuck off--but imagine the throngs of true believers? all of them armed.

It's such an idiotic notion--imagine the international incident this would cause. No nation would EVER concede to allowing that to happen. No fucking way. It's shear lunacy.

Um ... they're a country with mandatory military service for men. They also have one of the most perfect natural barriers as a border for their country. In addition they control a good amount of the money, and the US isn't more popular than money to other countries. So in truth, I think they'd kick our ass if we tried to invade.

This. The whole of Switzerland is one massive, militarized defense structure, armed to the gills. Even Hitler stayed the fuck away.

That moment is when I gained the respect I have for GW.

People say he is dumb, but a lot of those people would have had a shoe in their face.

he has lots of pratice.
😀

and to ubernuman: Clogs are Holland. Switzerland = koo-coo clocks and cow bells.
