Not likely. This savagery has been going on in Africa for quite some time. Really acts that you could only think of on an almost comedic level if you had to think of something truly knarly for a Saw-type horror flick. I believe that those who commit them are a different caliber of person from most of us. Forcing boys to shoot their family, rape their mother, taking bets on a raped woman's child's fetus and hacking it from her womb to seeing if you got the sex right, putting nasty acts on slips of paper in a pile (cut off lips, cut off hands, etc.) and making a victim pick his sentence from the pile, using human entrails as ropes at roadblocks, it goes on and on. The atrocities in Africa are really well beyond what most people believe they could be, far beyond a comparitively "benign" slaughter and gang rape seen the world over.

Some parts of Africa are truly forsaken and you should count your lucky blessings you don't have to live there or bring up a family in that sh*thole of a continent.

The whole 'Western' world is currently fixated on oil and terrorism. Human rights are only a priority if it can be used as reason to pursue the quest for natural resources.

Our only other option is to just send in the Marines, unfortunately we don't have any to send.

Same old song and dance of too little, too late. In a year and half we'll be hearing from some government spokesman about how more should have been done. In five years, the top US officials will all write in their memoirs that letting the situation in [insert African country here] deteriorate was the biggest mistake they made while in power.

Then we'll try to talk about how much we learned from this experience and how we'll never let anybody suffer the same fate again.

Africa is a mess we shouldnt be in. We talk about how many think democracy in the middle east is unlikely, I;ll tell yout his. In many African countries the prospect of freedom or any resemblance of it is about as likely as 100 people winning powerball on the same drawing. We need to get out and stay out.

Mainly charity goes to Africa. They don't get nearly the US foreign aid that other regions do. And most of what they do get is in AIDS research money.

I agree, Africa fails at democracy, every time. Corruption and genocide comes to surface extremely quickly every time they're allowed governance over their own affairs.

For the record, I think they were much better off under 20th century colonialism.

Actually 19th and 20th century colonialism are pretty much to blame for everyone one of Africa's problems. The Brits are terrible at societal engineering and they made the same mistakes in Africa that they made in the ME.

 
I really hope no alien civilization finds us, for at least another 10,000 years. If they do, I think they'll just exterminate us all to end the horrors. We'd look to them like nothing more than primitive beastly creatures, torturing each other for fun.

Why must "progress" include completely getting along and singing kumbaya with others whom we disagree? Read about the Tower of Babel. Although we are the same species, we are not the same. Nor will we be. Nor should we be.

If you or others believe it's even remotely possible, you have FAR more faith in mankind than I do.

Look, the "rest of the world" thinks the US is 'imperialistic', that we 'oppress' the rest of the world with our views, that we 'cram' them down the "rest of the worlds" throats.

The US should be making nightly news showing the suffering in Sudan and blaming it solely on the UN's (minus the US, since we're such sh1tty people) lack of any effort there.

The last I'd looked, the F'ing UN - which means the rest of the world - couldn't come up with 24 helicopters.

Which means, in reality, the "rest of the world" is a bunch of people who talk about action, but pssy out when it actually comes to getting it done. They like to whine and b1tch about "imperialistic" US, but when it comes down to it, they don't do sh1t themselves.

Darfur is the "rest of the worlds" mirror, funny how the US bashers won't look in it...

Interesting point...and valid. Something else that came to mind as I read it...not only does the rest of the world condemn our actions, or INaction in some cases, they turn around and condemn us ALSO if we dont do THEIR bidding, or if we dont accept THEIR plan for the world. Pretty interesting.

If the US was as much as an imperialistic country as some, including here, say, the US of A would be a far bigger country. We could literally forcefully take over and crush any military and its government we wanted with only a handful of exceptions...and integrate them. Instead, we try and set up governments closely modeled after ours (the most economically sucessful in the world), so they may know prosperity as well.

I think you need to re-read the story of the Tower of Babel - it's a story of massive triumph for the human people - they came together to achieve something so fantastic that it threatened the divine. According to the story, human difference isn't innate - it was imposed upon us by the divine, and is largely based in linguistic disparity.

And I'm not sure who's talking about singing Kumbaya. I think we're actually talking about stopping women from being gang-raped and then brutally murdered. A bit of a difference there. I am not out to be the World Police, but as a strong nation we need to defend those who can't defend themselves, no matter who they are.
