Inversely, I think that winter is peak gaming time, and summer is for outdoors activities. So heating is desirable.

And even when I game in summer it is usually after dark.

It must be dry as hell where you live. Time of day really doesn't matter here.

But yeah, it's fine in the winter because I never notice it.

I always feel like efficiency is what people talk about when they have lost the value and/or performance argument. If someone came out with a 600W GPU for $300 that beat the 1080, I'd be all over it.

I don't know about 600W because that puts you into an entirely different tier of PSUs. I'd rather something 50-70W more at better performance which would keep me in the 550-620W PSU where I prefer to be.

The $299 is the entry consumer FE prices. The $249 will most likely never exist as why would AIB cost that much when usually they are more? $30-40 for the cooler and different design will cost more.

If 1070 never sold for less than FE prices anyway until the gigabyte model came out, the same thing can apply here.

$299 and up is what the AIB models will cost.

However this is where the similarities end. Unlike the GTX 1080/1070 launch, the 19th is a hard launch for both the GTX 1060FE and for partner custom cards, and NVIDIA is expecting the bulk of the cards sold to be these custom cards. In this sense the GTX 1060 launch is more akin to the GTX 960 launch, as NVIDIA has more often than not opted to pass on producing reference cards for their mainstream cards.

In fact NVIDIA’s partners won’t even be selling the GTX 1060FE; the card will only be available through NVIDIA’s website. NVIIDA is calling the GTX 1060FE a “special limited edition” card, and though the company isn’t commenting on the matter, I strongly suspect that the GTX 1060FE is a limited run that NVIDIA will only be selling for a couple of months or so. NVIDIA has done similar things in the past, though ultimately when they curtain production is entirely up to them.

We've had Gigabyte and MSI models for $399, so entry level AIB cards should cost less than Founder's Edition. And it's clear that NVIDIA's focus with Geforce GTX 1060 are custom boards, FE will only be available via NVIDIA.com, it's most likely a limited run for a few months and AIBs already announced some of their VGAs.

Galax for example already announced 5 models. Basic model could be relatively close to MSRP.

I think that $280 to $320 is more realistic, but I agree that you won't be seeing MSRP on the 1060 for quite a while.

I don't think direct savings related to card power draw is the best metric for this (outside of pure 24/7 mining purposes).

less power draw = less heat. On your card and in your room. In the summer, my 280x easily heats my bedroom about ~2-3 degrees above the space outside the room...which is damn crazy (I haven't measured, but I'm definitely hit with a "wall of heat" when I walk into that room after it has been running for about 2 hours...so I go by feels).

Consequently, if you are putting that much heat into a space with a thermostat (I'm not), I imagine that this will keep your AC on much longer than necessary and drive further power costs not directly tied to the card.

Oh, and there is the greater performance/clocking potential with less power draw, no?

Some people can actually gain from the extra heat, as my room is pretty cold most of the year (excluding the 3 summer months, which are not that hot either), so in the colder months it's actually better, since i don't have to turn on extra heating.

True 600W is a little excessive, but it's not exactly like big PSUs are hard to get these days.

Nvidia suggests to its hardware partners to "do what I say, not what I do". So far they are about meeting halfway, and yes supply is a big reason why.

That being said, the x60 card is a big mover, so I think it'll be the one to actually see 3rd party cards released at $250-$260 the fastest. The low budget consumers are much less likely so stretch their budget, and $300 is simply out of the question for many of these. But you're guess is as good as mine as to what day MSRP actually means MSRP here.

This card (the 1060) looks phenomenal for upgraders from slower cards (GTX 960 and earlier). Still, for owners of GTX 970's and above, the 1060 seems to be about equivalent in performance, maybe more in the range of a GTX 980 - we'll see when the card actually releases.

I've gone from super stoked about this generation to completely non-plussed about it. For GTX 970 owners like me, unless you want to break the bank on a GTX 1070 (which ranges from $569 - $649 CAD + tax here in Canada), there's nothing attractive to upgrade to.

I didn't say they were available right now so I'm not sure if you didn't read or misquote me on purpose. There's specific Gigabyte and MSI models for this price each time they get back in stock at Newegg ($409 was the max I saw), so only $20 above MSRP. I can keep you updated if you'd like.

It's msrp just like a car at the dealership is advertised at a price to lure you in. Then when you get to the dealership that's when they tell you they've added $2000 worth of paint protection into the car.
Nvidia says $250 msrp unless the people will pay the actual msrp which is $299. If people would just nut up and not buy the stupid thing they'd have to sell them at the $249 price they are throwing out there.

Funny how AMD said $199 msrp on the 480 4gb and the first day I bought one at $199 msrp. No bs. No games. Deal done. That's how it should be done in my book.

they need something like a 1060 3GB in the end I guess, 128bit memory GP106 might be to slow to compete with the 480 4GB, and the 6GB 1060 is just to expensive for that ($50 more)

Certainly the fastest Pascal card to hit MSRP if true. I wonder if it's the Aero blower he's referring to though?

1060 can't be price gauged as hard as the others which are setting new performance standdards. Fastest card in the world for $700 will get people to bite. Titan X speeds at $450 will do the same. I doubt that many people are lining up for a $300 1060 though.

I don't think anyone is like "thank god I didn't spend $330 on a 970 nearly two years ago. My waiting is rewarded by saving $30 and getting ~15% more performance". $250 looks much more attractive relative to last gen... although even that is a steep 25% price increase to the 960's MSRP. Quite the inflation for 18 months. GTX 1050 vs RX 480 4GB will be an interesting battle for the $200 max crowd.
