Chicago had a walk out to protest they don't have enough money and they want to build a gay friendly high school? *sigh* Just build a normal one, avoid the whole stigma and serve the entire community.

Noticed this in the article too:

When the school opened its doors, protesters, led by anti-gay Kansas minister Fred Phelps, screamed at supporters gathered outside to repent for their "sodomite behavior."

Nothing like making them an easy target huh.

That was a protest about using property taxes to fund school and how the funding ends up distributed.

I don't think anyone rational pays any attention to what Phelps says or cares for that matter.

I see why they're doing it, but I don't think it will eventually pass.

Imagine if someone wanted to make a high school that "catered" to white students. But they were to say "all races are invited to attend, we just will just cater more to Caucasians." Do you think any other races would really want to go there? Of course not, and everyone and their uncle would surely protest against the school.

As a Chicagoan who pays an assload of property taxs I support this effort.

This will survive legal challenge, should anyone want to bring one (which is doubtful given it is Chicago).

I don't think this is a good solution. It's nice that they want to make life easier on the gay kids, but I don't think this is the correct way to do it. You're still abandoning lots of gay kids who may not be able to go to this school, which just makes life even harder for them.

The REAL solution is to root out homophobia in high schools; then EVERY school will be 'gay friendly.' All it requires is harsher penalties for homophobic behavior, similar to how many schools adopt harsher penalties for racist behavior. Caught being a homophobe? Sorry, you can't participate in sports; you're stuck in after school detention for being a little shit head.

Better idea, if you call a gay kid a fagot, you have to spend two hours being molested by a Catholic priest. That seems fair to me.

I don't think that's going to help; look how many criminals are repeat offenders. I think it would just increase resentment of gays.

How about improving education in areas of tolerance and acceptance? How about encouraging better, more active parenting?

You misinterpreted what I said. Why I see this as a potential problem is if the school is only full of gay people. I think that will make them more distanced from the community.
