Should he have put $5 on your card that wasn't part of the total cost shared by all? No. Should you get upset about it or confront him? No.

Just count $5 as the cost of not having enough cash on you to pay for your share and of deciding that you were too busy to leave. Chalk it up to lessons learned and next time don't let that particular person pick up the food unless he's using someone else's card. 🙂
 
Aimster don't listen to them. they are wrong. Go and confront the guy. Bitch about how he spent a extra $5 he was not authorized to take. DEMAND that 5 back. you will get it. make sure he knows its not the money but the fact he did something he was not allowed to do. be loud so everyone knows not to trust him with CC or anything.

i think this is the best course of action.

I don't tip nearly as much as for sitdown service I just tip a couple of bucks when I do take out. Especially if I'm getting a bunch of stuff for a bunch of people.

I take it you've never done this? Either of you?

Here's what happens. Person 1 doesnt have cash but persons 2,3,and 4 do. All 3 other people give cash to person 1 and he/she puts the entire purchase on his/her card. Now person 1 has cash AND the bill is paid for.

I don't tip for pickup orders. I'm paying for the food and as a part of the food purchase it is the restaurant's job to place it into whatever container allows it to get to my choice of eating location (if that is part of their restaurant setup). When I tip in a restaurant it's because the person has picked up after me, gone to get me drinks, carried my food to me - obviously not in that particular order.

Is guy wrong in charging extra on your card? YES
Are you over reacting by wanting to approach this person over 5 bucks? YES

Just drop it. If you work with this person for a long period of time or you go out drinking with this person on the same tab typically 5 bucks goes back and forth often.

in that case, there is one very simple lesson to be learned. always carry cash!
i keep 20-50 bucks in my wallet at all times. its a 30 second job to get more at the grocery store if i'm running low...

You authorized them when you gave him the credit card.

You know from the countless tipping threads that you've seen in your 6 years here that some people tip for carryout, some don't. If you didn't want him to tip, you should have told him not to. There's nothing a-hole about giving someone a tip (assume he'd have tipped were it his $).

It's $5. Get over it.
 
a lot of people tip take out. my fiancee worked at a place and tipping takeout was normal.
 
Gathered from all the responses in this thread, clearly some people tip for carryout and some don't. Since you're in the camp that doesn't tip for carryout and your buddy does, it's kind of both your faults for lack of communication. On the other hand, you could think of the 5$ as a delivery charge since you were busy but the tip should have been spread evenly among the 4 of you.

Chalk it up as a lesson learned and either give better direction next time or use cash or go make the pickup yourself. Not much you can do at this point without looking bad yourself. Confronting him over something that might not happen ever again is kind of useless.
 
uh, yes you should tip for carryout. not as much as for a waiter, but a little bit. $5 on $47 sounds exactly right. don't be such a cheapass. if you don't want to tip, then cook and prepare your own damn food.

It's such a minuscule amount I can't even comprehend how someone could muster an ounce of care about it. Does the OP also flip out when vending machines eat his 50 cents?
