tip used to be earn. Now it's to be expected. 🙁

In the eastern world, there's no such thing as tip.

thats what bugs me. tips were for great service. now no matter how bad the service is you tip.

then you have idiots that tip more so that it strokes the ego and think throwing around money is going to get everyone to like them. its rather sad.

EDIT: also im seeing tip jars at places where they make more then MIN wage. I went to a coffee shop with a friend. they had a tip jar (and yes they make more then min wage). Seen one at a pickup ONLY pizza place, etc. seems they are everywhere.

i don't mind tipping a wiater/waitress since they usually make like $2-3/hr but someone makeing min wage i say forget it.

What's next? Tipping the UPS guy... when you go to pick up your items?

He spends just as much time getting the item from wherever it is and handing it to you as he would if he was driving the truck!

And and and since he actually has to interact with you at the UPS store he should be tipped a lot more!

I don't because nobody does, if I go to Claim Jumpers the servers work off tips, and like I've said a billion times in this thread. When I call in a pick up order the server is spending almost the exact same amount of time dealing with me that they would if I came in and sat down to eat. I tip generally 1/2 carry out what I do sit down. Seeing how they're still spending 5 or so minutes with me total that's worth a tip, not as much because it's less time but still time is time right? Out here a lot of waiters make less than minimum wage and rely on tips to make a livable wage. Pick up or sit down, I'm being servered and good service at a place where waiters make tips just makes sense. can't help it if ATOT is full of cheap bastards. I never tip anywhere where tips aren't common place.

The fact that you tip more often and in higher amounts does not make everyone else a cheap bastard.

Waiters get tipped for waiting on you, if they take your order on the phone, and get your order when you come in. Guess what? They waited on you. Often times when on the phone they spend a lot more time with the person, because that person isn't there looking at a menu and doesn't have one to look over at home. If you don't tip somebody who waits on you, sorry you're a cheap bastard in my eyes. Has nothing to do with amounts, I don't think people who only tip 15% are cheap bastards, but people who don't tip at all are definitely.

If you give out your credit card you deserve to be ass-raped.

As for me, I dont tip for carry out or fast food or most things actually. I tip in fine dining establishments where the staff has been good to me.

it's five bucks. get over it, NOW.

This thread was never about the 5 bucks 😀 It was about tools that tip for every single little thing.

It better not be about the money since you've spent quadruple that in time complaining about it (assuming your time is worth something).

Can we get back to mocking tightwads now? Don't you have coupons to clip or something?

If you don't know what you want when you called, then I'm sorry, it's your fault. Who the hell call a restaurant and asks "what's on the menu today?"

No, spending time on the phone is not an extra service that requires tipping. Waiter get tips when they go beyond the standard services of making your meal enjoyable at the restaurant.

1. Tipping on takeout is not normal for me, but it may be normal for someone else.
2. Maybe they earned the tip? Maybe they rushed the order? Maybe they threw in a freebie (extra wings, extra sauce, etc?)
3. Do NOT make a big deal out of this in the workplace, you will be that guy. that guy no one invites out for lunch, that guy everyone makes fun of behing your back
4. $5 is really not all that much to begin with - say you had to get cash.. In a rush you may go to a 3rd party atm and pay a surcharge, plus the time/gas/ convenience of someone else picking up your food
5. Did everyone who paid you in cash account for tax and tip? You may only be out a dollar, dude..

Here's what I would do (and you should too):
Next time you see him walking towards you, kick him in the balls as hard as you can. When he goes down, take out his wallet and a credit card. Place his credit card on his chest and then drop trou and take a dump on the card. Wipe your butt with his tie.
This way him and everyone you work with will get the message that you are not to be messed with. Otherwise they will continue to walk all over you.

You forgot to tell him to maintain a stance of dominance during the entire process!

If you want a steak but you don't know what the Outback up the street has you call and ask, people who go inside and sit down don't know what they want most of the time. So they look at a menu and the server comes back when they're ready. You cannot do this if you're at home and have no menu. And on the phone I cannot magically know what the daily specials are as they change daily and I don't have Superman vision to see the board they have posted with them all the way at my house.

Carryout folks at most restaurants are on the tip-based wage scale, meaning they make shit without tips. 10-15% for prompt service is normal, cheapass.

Not true. Not AT ALL true.

What's not true? Everyone I know tips when they pick up carry out, given I only know maybe 10 people. But we all do it. Not true for ATOTers where most think any sort of tipping period is a crazy idea.

I mean those servers already make like 6 bucks a hour why the hell should I tip them for getting my to-go box for me? - ATOTER

They make minimum wage, MORE than enough for what they do. You obviously make enough money to be throwing it around at everyone but I don't. I don't tip when I go to McDonald's or picking up Chinese food and I only tip for good service at a restaurant. People earn tips, they don't get it just for doing what their minimum wage job calls for.

Good point. I wonder if Quebert tips the server when he goes to MickeyDs or burger king or any other fast food place.

2 weeks ago I went out to eat, the lady carried the food to my table and came back once to fill our drinks and once to ask if I needed anything. When I got it to go a few weeks before, the same chick carried me my bag of food and asked if I needed anything else. Pretty much the same shit minus the one extra time to fill my drink. I shouldn't have tipped her when I sat down and ate by what people on here are saying, because all she did was walk a few feet a few times to help me.

So you think a person waiting on you for an hour is the same as a person bringing a bag of food to you? I'll try to break it down for ya 🙂 The person waiting on you might spend a total of 5 minutes or so interacting with you but they're also watching (supposedly) your table and ready at your beck and call to bring you anything you might need. Do you see the difference there or do I need to explain it further?

I see the difference, that's why if the same person sits me down and serves me or gets it to go will get a different tip. If I didn't understand the difference I'd tip 20-30% in both cases, and I don't. To go gets 5-10% max.

Stupid argument is stupid.

Do you tip the people in best buy when you call and ask if they have X in stock?

Or are you supposed to tip whenever you order anything over the phone? Because that's exactly what you're doing when you call for a pickup.

This is EXACTLY the entitlement mentality that pisses people off - I bet you were a waiter/busboy/something at one point and assume that you're supposed to get tipped regardless of what you actually do.... that's not the case bud.

im not gonna give quebert a hard time for tipping. its his money. i think its too much to tip for take out unless you had a really special order maybe and knew who took it. maybe. for calling in "i want a #7, no pickles, with a coke" no.

and im not the type of dipshit that would call in and make somebody wait 5 minutes on me o the phone so i can decide what i want. know what you want when you call in, i bet people would appreciate that just as much as an extra buck, if not more.

dollar amount aside, who the F tips on carry-out! The whole point of carry-out is to get out of tipping a delivery boy.

The exact same thing happened to me, too, and my salad which I could've easily walked 2 blocks down the road to get ended up costing me almost $15. But my co-worker offered to go pick it up, and I gave her my credit card. Personally, I normally don't tip for carryout, but I guess she does... lesson learned.

I remember a time when the greatest flattery for a given establishment would come through repeat business. A tip is when they go above and beyond, and sometimes as a show of sympathy😛

QueBert, you are welcome to tip what you please but stop labeling people as cheap due to what they tip. We all come from different backgrounds and show our appreciation in different ways so STFU about it.

Last time I sat this, I tip people who work for tips. SERVERS work for tips, when you call to pick up food at Applebees or whatever, a SERVER is helping you. You tip a waiter/server, not a watier/server who only waits or serves you in the restraunt sitting down. Why would I tip a Best Buy dude who doesn't ever work for tips. The person at the restraunt is probably making LESS than minimum wage. And the time they spend helping you on the phone and getting your food. Even if it's only 4 minutes total. Is 4 minutes they could be spending helping the family of 4 they say down 35 minutes ago. And that 4 minutes away could lead to a smaller tip from the family since the server wasn't around when they wanted something because I was being served a to go order. Leaving the SERVER unable to help the people at their sit down tables.

Wrong, waitstaff in America work for tips (with a nominal wage). Also remember your server may be paying taxes on your non-existent tip (depending on the state), so you're essentially taking money from them. This is OK if they really screw up (in which case you should also talk to a manager).

Go to Europe or Asia if you don't want to tip, and enjoy the consistently prompt and excellent service you receive (especially in France).
