Gas station purchase limit: $75.00

The thing is, Visa stops at $50, MS stops at $75. But it's up to the individual station as to whether they enforce those rules or not. It might have been fine back when gas was $2 a gallon but I can barely fill up my 2-door Grand Am for $50.

First problem seems to be you waited until you were beyond empty, which isn't ever a good idea (unless you like pumping the crap in the bottom of your gas tank through your fuel injection system??).

You do understand that the fuel pump pickup is at the bottom of the tank right? It *always* picks up from the bottom.

Gasoline serves as a lubricant and coolant for the fuel pump. (It took a while for me to believe how important this is.) Allowing the gas to get too low leads to premature death for the gas pump. This is a common problem for owners of trucks with dual tanks - they run one dry before switching over (according to Click & Clack)

never, ever run a fuel injected engine dry.

and as i said earlier, more gas = more net positive suction head, less strain on the pump

Is this a US thing (cutting of at 50 or 75$?) The SUV takes close to $100 to fill and i have never had any issues paying for it with my visa?

04-18-08 UPDATE:

I just used the same CC at a different gas station (1/2 mile away from the previous one) to buy $81.55 in gas.

So, it appears that the limit is not imposed by my CC.

Visa cuts you off at $50? Lame..I was hitting $47 for a full tank when we were at like $3.19, I fill up more frequently now but I'm sure if I needed a full tank it would top $50. Ugh.

What's even lamer is most gas stations here charge you $0.45 more per gallon for premium than regular (wtf? it was $0.20 more, then $0.30, now $0.45? why the hell are we paying so much more?)

effing sucks that my beater civic was stolen, i could've used regular and gotten crazy mileage...

Try filling up a boat. I need to use 3-4 different credit cards because of the $75 limit. Sometimes you can just go inside and they will reauthorize the card. I wonder if I went in first if they could just authorize the card for a large amount.

I was just thinking about this the other day - we'll typically fill the gas tank of the van, pull forward a bit and fill the tank on the boat as well. I didn't have a problem last year; hopefully I won't this year either.

I am happy that I have a full tank in the boat from the fall when gas was $3.25-ish per gallon. Now its about $4/gallon. Multiply that by 75 gallons and thats PAINFUL. Can't imagine the guys with gas tanks that hold hundreds of gallons.

It's probably the station imposing the limit. Someone stole my dad's CC and put over $500 in fuel for their boat.

EDIT>> heh coincidence you guys were already talking about boats.
