My dad telling me this all the time, it pisses me off because I know it is not true. It doesnt matter if you have half a tank or you are empty when you fillup again.
 
Fill up when the light turns on and not too much after that... btw, filling your tank up at halfway each time results in slightly less gas mileage and power because of the slightly higher average weight in gas you're carrying around.

You don;t have to fill up half way! Though if you alwyas drive your car to the point where it runs out of gas it is a little rough on your pump. Other than that nope nothing espcially with gas milage.
 
heh even i knew NOT to run it down to empty!

But cars suck. We need to put new rotors +pads on my wife's car and the check engine light just came on in mine. bah!

wich i knew how to fix this stuff myself. heh

A Vermont winter can make a car not start if it is low on gas, condesation in the fuel lines = a bad thing. Keeping the tank full keeps water vapor out.
 
I grew up in Montreal and lived further North than that as well.

In the winter time we kept our fuel tanks full for a couple of reasons:

1) As has been mentioned, water will condense in the empty space. This is made worse by the large difference in temp in the winter. Water can then freeze and that locks up the fuel line.

2) When you live in an area where you could get stuck in snow, having a full tank of gas to run your engine longer for heat can save your life.

Once you get used to seeing 1/2 a tank (maybe 1/4) as the spot to fill-up, it becomes habit.

I actually checked up on #1 with a couple of friends who were mechanics. They all said the same, it isn't the first time more water condenses, it is cumulative and it hits harder in the winter time when the water freezes.

I seem to want to fill up everyday regardless because if I wait for a week to re-fill up then it costs me an extra 10 to 15 cents extra a gallon. I know it really doesn't make that much difference though. 🙁
 
Full tank makes your car weigh more, which means more to move, which means your car has to work harder and thus burn more gas, I notice a difference in off the line pick up with an almost empty tank.

I always run it to the E and then fill it up. Frankly I don't give a crap what it does to my car. Put a bullet in my brain the day I start filling up when it's half full. Filling up occurs frequently enough that I can't be bothered to engage in that nonsense. So to answer your question, well I guess I didn't. I was just venting 😀

Me and my wife are going to build a new house. I plan on building a big shed so i can get a older car to "tinker" on. Try to learn some of the stuff to fix it.

Since i am not working anymore it sounds like it would be fun.
