[GameGPU] Just Cause 3

GameGPU used SSAO and SMAA_T2X. I didn't see any reference to any GameWorks features in their review. Feel free to add any other reviews to this thread if you find them (PCgameshardware, TechSpot, Computerbase, etc.). That means the graphs below are with GWs features off.

For those who keep ripping AMD's FX series and hyping up i3s since forever, have fun with that idea. FX9590 > i5 4670/i7 2600K.

My personal opinion - this game is very poorly optimized on the GPU side for its level of mediocre graphics. Requiring an overclocked 780 or a 290/Titan to hit 60 fps @ 1080P for console level graphics. My opinion = Mad Max, made on the same Avalanche Engine 3.0 looks and runs better.

This is with everything maxed out, including tessellated water.

No SLI/CF support for now.

As always, feel free to link other review sites/graphs in this thread for a more diverse comparison.

Console performance: Atrocious. Get this game for the PC if you are choosing between the platforms.

"What's clear is that neither version of Just Cause 3 is able to sustain a locked 30fps, but it is indeed the Xbox One release that offers a noticeably lower level of in-game fluidity. In our tests, we've compared both cut-scenes and gameplay, and our lowest recorded drop occurs on Xbox One, where a massive explosion sends us plummeting to 20fps, while PS4 plateaus to 24fps in entirely different circumstances - with CPU power the likely culprit for bottlenecked performance there. Blowing up a bridge with C4 explosives causes a mid-20s dip on both machines as the structure crumbles into its component parts. Bearing in mind that not a huge amount is happening from a visual perspective otherwise, it does suggest that the Jaguar CPU architecture of both consoles is being pushed to its limit." ~ Digital Foundry

Load times are .....you could have breakfast and shower.

"You do get incredibly long loading times and if you play more than an hour or so it can actually take nearly 15 minutes to reload a save," NX Gamer's video analysis says. "And this just looks like memory leakages where it's clearing out RAM. Some of the AI goes mad, the physics can react really oddly and unfortunately on top of all these problems, the performance with a game that's totally designed around blowing stuff up and having this chaotic… world doesn't perform very well at all.

In my tests so far we're looking at a low of 17fps, and this can be really bad and compounded by the fact that along with this the actual physics engine itself and animation system then gets slowdown, which is like to a hark back to the old 16-bit days where the whole game just slows down in presentation. Even though the framerate might actually still be hitting 30, it feels like you're running and turning through treacle."

Why is the screenshot so grainy? Is that some kind of peasantry cinematic filter effect? lol

It completely ruins the textures.

Those console problems sound like major bugs, and its launching before its ready.

Edit: Mad Max on the same engine launched with excellent CF & SLI support..

SMAA looks like crap in this title. I actually think FXAA is better for this game but both SMAA and FXAA smudge the game's textures like crazy. Look at the red car's tire/spokes, front headlights and license plate.

I feel sorry for the programmers/employees who worked so hard on this game. Clearly the suits had an idea of this game hitting the holiday 2015 timeline regardless. The last thing a game needs competing against the big games this holiday season is terrible performance and load times. I have a feeling this might flop and there could be layoffs at Avalanche Studios. Not good for the gaming industry when games are rushed.

Does SMAA ever look good? Some games like Arkham Knight look better with no AA than they do with SMAA...

Now I'm torn on what to do with NewEgg's free scam code for this game...

Isn't that an Intel, not a Newegg promotion? I thought Intel was giving out 3 free games with a purchase of a new CPU. You could sell it and buy something else? Or just enjoy the game if you are into open-world games where the purpose is blowing s*** up and not much else. 😀

BTW, congrats on the i7 4790K.

Yeah, I did want it for some mindless fun lol. And I just found it funny that the gift code prevented me from using the Visa checkout discount, and both offers expired on the same day...

Thanks! Pretty satisfied with the results so far. That encoding time...

Ya, I am not sure I understand why that restriction was in place. What difference does it make to Visa if you are buying a product with a game coupon voucher or not? You are spending the same $$$.

Well, my .02 for those interested. Finished downloading the game right at midnight, just played for about a half hour.

First impressions:
- In-game map incredibly huge
- ALOT of texture/surface flickering. Not sure if it is a global illumination problem or general texture issue. Very distracting
- Motion Blur pretty broken. Smears character faces and world objects. Almost like stuck in warp.
- Swapped between FXAA, SMAA, SMAA T2X, the differences are negligible. Did not have any framerate indicators overlayed, unsure of performance effects.
- 4K is a total no go, awful performance
- Totally grainy look to most everything
- That said; explosions, animations, gunplay all look top notch from what I could tell. Vehicle feel was good, again for the short time I played. Helicopter control felt anemic and simplified compared to GTA V
- Simply no comparison to GTA V graphically, which is a shame
- Nvidia gameplay screenshots show no graininess. Don't like that at all.

Bottom line, still need to invest some time into the game. Was never a fan of the Just Cause series. Throwaway story lines. Gameplay enjoyment depends largely on how much the player likes to blow stuff up. But we will see, the reviews are decent. $27 on CDKeys.

EDIT: 1440p, 980 Ti

It's a Newegg thing. I was prevented from using the 5% off codes they kept sending me as well.

As for this game, performance looks good enough to be playable, so I'll just read a few reviews. Looks like the console port is even worse than the PC port of Arkham Knight at launch though. Yikes! And console users can't even tweak the game to make it playable...

On the plus side, it looks like the game performs equally bad regardless of what hardware you're running. That's nice, right?

SMAA looks excellent in Crysis 3, Evolve, and pretty much every game its been used in, it was superior to FXAA with less blur.

Here, it looks grainy, though apparently that's for all the AA.

Must be the cinematic feels they are chasing for. :/

Well, they nailed that 24FPS cinematic feel on consoles and low-end PCs.

PCGames Hardware is currently running through their tests and updating the graphs. Performance seems mediocre on all hardware, with Maxwell doing best.

They also observed three issues:
With Maxwell GPUs the vram clocks fluctuate at times and kill performance. The game ready drivers which should come today are supposed to fix this.
With Kepler GPUs changing resolution ingame stops water from being rendered, a game restart will fix this.
With AMDs 15.11 Crimson driver they had graphics artifacts, the just relesed Crimson 15.11.1 Beta fixed them.

They use their own savegame with a twenty-second long "choreography" of their own as their benchmark, because apparently driving around isn't taxing enough.

FXAA is awful, and SMAA barely makes any difference. Applies to all the games I've used either of 'em on.

Use them together, however...

Does using SMAA/FXAA through RadeonPro also turn the image grainy?

Best looking explosions I've ever seen in a video game. Loving the game atm honestly. Feels like JC2 but improved. Rico's movement is fluid and amazing.

Should be an option to disable online notifications though. I really don't need to see who beat my headshot record every time I log on.

Go into steam offline mode before you start the game

Sweclockers.

1080p

1440p

And 4K.

11001

A few notes: the 390X beating the Fury (non-X), is quite disconcerning. It's especially visible at 1080p.

Also, the minimums on the Titan X at 4K being that much higher than the 980 Ti is interesting. I'd highly doubt VRAM is used up too much considering the 980 Ti has 6 GB VRAM and anyway even Shadow of Mordor at 4K doesn't stress even 4 GB of VRAM.

Finally, a brief note on 4K. Just Cause 3 is a very beautiful game, but it's also very well optimised. This benchmark solidifies the view that we don't yet have a decent 4K capable single dGPU today, no matter the spin from either NV or AMD about either the Fury X or the 980 Ti.
