Of course Oberyn will volunteer. He's got Gregor coming into town specifically so that he'll have a chance to kill him. Tywin will use Gregor as the Crown's champion and Oberyn will stand up for Tyrion so that he gets to kill Gregor before anyone else has a chance. Of all the convoluted plotting that goes on in GOT this is one of the simplest things to figure out and still a couple of people here can't grasp it.

well, to be fair, the show also built up Jamie's combat skills w/bronn.

so Jamie vs bronn for real was also a good possiblilty when tyrion opted for trial by combat.

that is until the previews showed the Mountain coming to town

What show are you watching? The show built DOWN Jaime's skills fighting left-handed. They showed his frustration and they showed how Bronn toyed with him and easily won. Other than hanging a giant neon sign over Jaime's head flashing "Not ready to fight for real! Not ready to fight for real!" it couldn't have been made more clear. Jaime was never a good possibility to fight for either side. While it's HIGHLY likely that at some point in the story Jaime will have to fight somebody really good, it's been made crystal clear that it's not happening soon.

If Tyrion loses his trial by combat, could he still beg for mercy and take the black? I don't think so and thats why having a trial by combat threw a kink in Tywin's/Jamie's plan. The writers of the show have not made it straightforward imo.

yeah, I remember tywin saying that in a break during the middle of the trial.
lol..

and since LAdy Flowers dad is a wimp, he'll go along w/whatever tywin says.
even if oberyn votes innocent, it's 2-1.

kangaroo court indeed

I saw that coming a mile (or a few hundred feet ) away!

It looks like the trial by combat will be in the next episode, but we have to wait two weeks for it. :(

Rut roh! Time for the "closet book reader" crusade to ensue! Speculate right and you're out!

I was really hoping for some more, but the episode wasn't terrible.

That was one if my favorite episodes of this season. I loved the dialogue between Tyrion and Prince Oberyn. It was also nice to hear the Hounds story of how he was burned. Things aren't looking so good for Him cashing in on Arya. Every time he goes to bring her somewhere for money they end up dying. I'm not sure if Little Finger would pay him anything for Arya, but who knows.

Edit: I realize that the story of The Hounds burns was told in season 1 by Little Finger to Sansa, but it was nice to get the full details.

I was shocked that they fit that all into the episode. The entire scene with Sansa, Little Finger and then her aunt was played out over a couple chapters in the book and seemed a little more desperate on Little Finger's part. Almost seemed to easy and planned out.

:D haha. I am vindicated! (I hope....)

anyhoo, yeah, very great episode. Oberyn vs Mountain should be good, but I suspect the Prince's head is growing tired of its shoulders. ...though I hope not.

And--Tyrion DID pick Jamie. Jamie just pussed out. what a bastard.

Ending was spectacular. As soon as LF walks into the throne room, you knew Bird lady was going to be at the bottom of that hole. I mean....there is another 2? seasons on contract. That means we need two more seasons of Sansa being shit-upon by the world of Westeros.

Arya + Hound + LF win this episode.

sucks that Firecrotch is going to try and burn Stannis' daughter, but I suspect the illiterate knight will have something to say about that.

yup. Tyrion/Oberyn scene is best of the season so far, imo.

Is it just me, or does Dannasyeas get younger each episode? :hmm:

He kissed Sansa to make Lysa crazy jealous, so it was all planned out.

For once I actually called something right. I had the Oberyn/Mountain thing figured out.

not sure about that--but he definitely was maneuvering for Sansa for some time, and certainly wanted Queen lady dead.

I see it as a convenient situation that worked out for him earlier than he hoped
AFAIR, Little Finger has never killed anyone by his own hands.

You sure you haven't read the book? :D

I called The Mountain right away as well. It didn't even occur to me that Cersei would pick anybody else. On the other side, however, I called either Jaime or Bronn, and in this episode they basically crushed the two possibilities in the first 10 minutes. Oh well.

Loved Tyrion-Oberyn and Hound-Arya talks. The Brienne/Podrick-HotPie scenes while a nice way to move forward the story seem to happen extremely conveniently. They just had to pass by that particular inn, and wth HotPie who knew he'd have such a big mouth . Lucky it really was the good guys talking to him or he could have gotten killed and jeopardized Arya's life as well.

Edit: Some more scenes: Melisondre boobs sighting is always good, and Daenerys scenes while a little boring but managed to show that she's getting smarter and knows which buttons to push around (her employees) making sure that they keep being loyal to her.

They picked right which is the correct way to the Eyrie. I guess Brienne decided to trust on Podrick's gut feeling. We can't be sure of how long it would take them to get there though and what the situation will be when/if they did.
