My wording was ambiguous, what I meant was that the economy grew from 2002-2008, not that the budget was balanced during that time. Obama's spending is entirely appropriate given the shocks to our financial industry and the inability of the consumer to support growth.

If our economy grows, and inflation holds at around 3-4%, we can support $15 or $16 trillion without a problem. If it had continued to contract, we wouldn't have been able to support $10 trillion.

What you continue to ignore, intentionally no doubt, is that a nascent economic recovery is no time to slash spending. The government supports that are in place right now will need to be removed carefully as the economy shows it doesn't need them anymore. If the next administration inherits a robust economy and fails to balance the budget, they will be to blame.

I couldn't even figure out what he was talking about. My post was about what was accomplished since January '09. If anything, it suggested that I don't care if the Democrats get booted.

It was especially odd considering that the OP and first two responses were very much about the posters celebrating their "Team"'s anticipated return to power despite all the problems that the country is facing right now.

When economy is booming again. We should have been running surpluses and saving for a rainy day through the early 2000s instead of cutting taxes left and right and running deficits. It's very simple, when consumers are spendful, government should be austere, when consumers are austere, government should be spendful. If both government and consumers are austere, we'll have an economic debacle, which is what GOP wants for 2012 Presidential election.

Obama's declining popularity is also due to his general weakness (or appearance of weakness) as a President. I know plenty of moderates on both sides who are frustrated with him. Also, his stats have only gone down siginificantly since his presidency started, by anyone's metrics.

As for seats, healthcare reform passed by 7 votes. Doesn't take much.
