I've had SGS3 and Note 2 -- No such issue as Seven describes, I don't buy it.

The S4 hardware wise is a fine device, but software wise not so much. The stock Android is crap. I've only had the S2 and it did the same thing. Froze, required a battery removal multiple times. The custom ROM helped a bit, but the overall experience with the phone was negative. And yes, my friend stock S3 does the same thing. It's just the gay software.

I have owned 2 different Galaxy S3 & 3 different Galaxy Note2 (I buy & sell phones off CL). Never, NEVER have I had to do a battery pull due to freezing.

I switched from an iPhone 5 to a GN2 and was about to return the phone because of the grainy indoor pictures. I actually found a GN2 camera "guide" over at xda. I am going to assume the GS4 is the same as the GN2 in this respect. When taking a picture, ALWAYS switch the picture taking mode to "Low Light". My wife still has the iPhone 5, and in comparison shots I actually feel the GN2 is slightly better in this mode. At the very least, the quality is identical.

The only hassle with this is that you have to switch this setting every time you open the camera app.

I really do miss iMessage. I use Google Voice, but no MMS is terrible. Also, not having the messages grouped by contact annoys me (a new thread starts every few days with a particular contact). I was hoping Google would purchase WhatsApp and combine Google Voice and WhatsApp into a super iMessage-like service.

I will NOT be going back to Apple unless something drastic changes, I absolutely love my GN2, but there are two things I really miss: iMessage (as already mentioned) and Siri. Siri let me do certain functions while the phone was locked and also while I was driving it went through my car's Bluetooth...Google Now is really good in some areas, but Siri is much better at natural voice ("Remind me when I get home to take out the trash") and hands-free driving features.

Apparently Reviewers don't come across these issues. Like Brian who uses he's review phones for weeks even months before posting a review. You'd think he would have come across the issues you describe here.

In the end, why would you torture yourself like this? Why would you want to keep using the SGS4 when you don't like anything about it. It was never going to be very different from the SGS3. You should have tried windows phone. That might be more your cup of tea.

Btw, you can install a different keyboard without having to pay for it. You can use the AOSP keyboard and some other free ones.

I'll just leave this here.

Hmm, ever wonder why the SGS phones always have blue by default? Because the blue colors are blown.

Wow, just wow. It seems like you've had every issue you could possibly have on your SGS4. However, I'd like to quote a couple of things:

I quickly realized that the text messaging interface is just as ugly and primitive as it was before compared to the iPhones interface. Why, oh why couldn't they give more customization choices for the overall look and feel of the keyboard by now? All the emoji come out black and white and most of the ones that were available on the iPhone are not even here! And no, I am not paying for an extra app to make the interface nicer, when I had all that by default on the iPhone.

Use a different keyboard. Use a different text messaging app.

You do realise you're on android now and you're not FORCED to use the stock apps, right? :p

And on dropped calls, I've worked in the same location for almost 3 years now and I've gone from a Desire Z, to a SGS2, then SGS3 and now a Note II. In between I've tested a few other things for work, etc (including some IP4s and I was forced to use a 3GS for 2 hours once - ugh!) and guess what? All of my phones have more or less dropped calls in exactly the same places. In exactly the same places I get the same levels of 3g covereage and then it switches over to 2g in more or less the same places at the back of my work.

The ONLY difference I've had is, as time has gone by, the strength of the 3g signal has slowly been pushed a little further deeper into my shop (probably a combination of mast upgrades and better software/hardware on the phones). I still drop calls in the same areas. Actually, if anything, the Note II is definitely the more reliable of all my phones (if only slightly).

Edit: And actually, on the point of calls dropping, do we even need to talk about how useless the antennas in the IP4 are? The 4S+ has great signal, but IP4 is pretty bad. :p

But I root and tweak my phones. I use bloat-free software* and custom kernels (AMAZING dev work has been done on the SGS3/Note II variants by a single awesome dev) and rarely have any problems that aren't caused by myself messing around with something. Of course Android lags. But do you know what iOS does? It PAUSES. Nobody else seems to notice this. Instead of just carrying out the task, iOS will pause for 100-500ms (or even a couple of seconds on the iPod touch 4th gen I used to have) and then carry out the animation at 60fps. Over all, Android is getting much faster for me, even if it does lag and jerk slightly.

*carrier bloat is a real issue which Google shouldn't tolerate! It could be messing up your phone, so you should investigate trying to clear some of it off.

And actually one last point: Most iPhones have issues at launch too. IP5 and 4S both had battery issues when they came out and various software issues. Why is it so much more of an issue when Android also has issues? :)

But I do think your phone may be defective though. You should look into swapping it out!

Hmm, ever wonder why the SGS phones always have blue by default? Because the blue colors are blown.

Nope, not for the SGS3/Note II (with custom software) and not for SGS4. SGS4 actually has an Adobe RGB mode and apparently even the standard colour profiles are pretty close to the correct blue point (just more saturated). Now, why don't you go and read up on how blue the "retina" display is? :)
Actually, if anything, the SGS3/Note II screens are... too green! :p

By the way, now running CM10.1. Touch latency still lags behind iOS, but the UI, app experience is incredible compared to touchwiz.Pretty, cohesive, and smooth. I like it quite a bit running on my note 2.

Strange that you never complained about the blueness in the LCD's like the one in the iPhone 4S which was almost 10000k according to the Anand link (I think it's inaccurate, it should be more like 7750k, a little less blue than the GS3's 7850k).

The iPhone 5's screen is better but still at least 7200k according to at least three different sites other than Anand's. Anand's results in your link seems to be the closest to 6500k (around 6800k) but still isn't as close as the GS4's Movie mode scores (6600k).

I offered 20 bucks for a video and I'll even double it if he can get the phone to brick and freeze to the point he has to pull the battery like he says

The excessive lag sounds like you have a lemon. The dropped calls are either from a lemon phone or your carrier; the only time I ever get dropped calls on my GS3 are during 30+ minute conversations on the highway when I'm switching cell towers like nuts...

As for the bad indoor/ night shots -- yeah, they do suck with default settings. Turn on night mode (even for indoor photos) and its MUCH better.

As a counterpoint, my iPhone 5 is a clear step down in nearly every way from my GS2. I have better battery life without needing to swap batteries, a better camera, and a convenient stock option to resize images when I attach them to emails (I'd love to see this on every platform). Aside from that it's a much crappier experience and even jailbroken the iPhone 5 is slower and less capable almost regardless of my workflow. With or without the jailbreak, btw, my iPhone suffers from more app crashes than any previous smartphone I've owned. This agrees with the few third party studies comparing stability of the two systems, one example of which is shown here: http://www.forbes.com/sites/tomiogeron/2012/02/02/does-ios-crash-more-than-android-a-data-dive/

My iPhone 5 experience is somewhere around that of my WinMo 6.1 HTC Touch Diamond, with the Diamond actually having a lot more flexibility but the iPhone having vast hardware advantages.

Still, I've seen in a variety of reviews that the GS4 stock has an oddly laggy UI. The HTC One seems imperfect as well, but I'm going to buy one of them at full price in the next few weeks to end my iOS hell.

updated OP with a few pictures for comparison sake. For me personally, the camera quality, and colors are definitely one of the main factors when judging smartphones.

There are some points here if it's really that laggy, but many of your gripes are easily fixed if you weren't lazy. You CAN change the keyboard, you CAN change how the screen acts when it's on your face, but for some reason because its not how you like it by default it's terrible in comparison.

This type of reviewing completely invalidates the rest of your post because I don't know if the rest is real problems or just you being lazy. I'd love to hear a real opinion of the phone because I'm thinking it's not all it's cracked up to be, but I can't get that opinion here.

So let me get this straight. The SGS2 is faster than your iPhone 5 and the 5 is more like a WinMo HTC Diamond?

Can I get some of what you're having? Lol

I have to agree. I have a feeling his indoor photo issue could be fixed with using dark /night mode too. When I tested the s4 in store I did not run into any lag.
