1. turn off auto updates
2. disable both auto update service and the background intelligent...blah service.
enjoy your computer.
I made the mistake of leaving it on one time and an update happened overnight. the next morning, my network connections was completely hosed and I couldn't reinstall that part. had to do a clean install...after that I always turn off autoupdates and related services and always turn on system restore and schedule restore point creation on a daily basis
also, if you were logged in with reduced rights, the computer would not reboot after the autoupdate

Actually that should go to prove how most people think you aren't the sharpest tool in the shed; the entire gloriously making public your inability to manage Windows then blaming Microsoft.
Or perhaps the vast majority of us are immature pricks and you are the mature one.
You're complaining about automatic updates rebooting your computer and you think you're ever going to be able to use a unix based OS for your primary system?

Inability to manage Windows? You know, when the option says "ask me" or "let me choose when..." it should be exactly that. There shouldn't be some Microsoft backdoor into every XP installation to force an update and restart. What you don't get is in terms of usability, windows just plain sucks. It's not nearly as user friendly as it should be. Look at OS X, there you have a great example of UI friendliness and how things should just work. Hell....linux is nice too just because I know what's going on in the background, I didn't even know M$ could do this crap forcefully before now.
I'm complaining becuase at no point when I was setting up windows did I OK this, and at no point was I told my computer could be forcibly rebooted or forcibly patched. And don't get into being able to use a Unix-Based OS...chances are I was using one before you even knew what Unix was.
i never install hte updates. i don't go to websites where my security can be comprised. i keep it clean and simple.
