As I said before, unless they combined comcast and time warner and then broke them into 20 companies such that each area could chose from at least 2 providers, this concept of competition is an illusion. For the most part every house has one cable line, one phone line, one power line etc...connected to their house. That gives you the choice of 1 provider as the cost to lease access space is either not required by the local municipality or cost prohibitive unless it's an established secondary carrier in the area which are far and few in between.

I am positive the reality of hard wiring in my building (can't do dish in Manhattan unless you live in a single family brownstone) is not atypical: we are hard wired for both Time-Warner and RCN.

And the goal is to stand up and work to keep the Capitalism model healthy. Competition is the nucleus.

Sitting by and railing and blowing smoke does not get it done.

I had Comcast in the SF Bay Area.

Apparently I'm one of the few people who's had no major issues with Comcast (in the Bay Area and in Chicago) but I still don't want to see this merger go through. Nothing good can come of giving one company that much control over internet AND content (NBC and its various sister stations) practically nationwide.

I had constant, never resolved, perpetually intolerable issues with COmcast over 3 or so years in Chicago. The other two years were with RCN--I love RCN. I'm sure they are long dead now, though. (only time I was forced into Comcast was the building I was living in had a Comcast-only contract. fucking bullshit like that should be illegal.)

5 or so years in the Bay Area, I haven't really had an "issue" with Comcast, just that for the last two years, I've been paying exorbitant sub for the shittiest possible speeds. $40 for 3/500

The only problem I have with Comcast is how they hike my bill every six months. I either have to lower my internet or thrreaten to cancel to get something semi affordable. They don't do squat for existing customers.

Scuuuuzzze ME!!????

Not only is RCN NOT DEAD....it is alive, thriving and burgeoning!!!! But it is still regional.

I could not live happily without RCN, nor could most who live in my building which is hard wired for both RCN and Time-Warner. RCN has almost all of the building now....and, as I said to JOY, one of their worldclass reps only the other nite, with this possible merger....bet the few still lame/masochistic enough to stay with TW will soon switch.

RCN truly is the ultimate paradigm for what Capitalism what meant to be and can be.

Both Comcast and TW have among the lowest customer approval ratings on the planet. THAT...is OFFICIAL.

And, this is still America: by the people.....but only if individuals exercise that privilege. As some sharp guy on Bill Maher said last week re this merger.

Chilling, cracking wise to friends or in a thread moves nothing along.

Signing petitions, organizing, contacting reps.....THAT WORKS. More merda happens because of apathy and sins of omission than anything.
