More Liberals waging war on Capitalism. If you all don't like it, then don't use either of them. Send them a message by making do with dial up.

That would take more than a few people to send a message. Unfortunately not many will put up with dialup in this century.

Yeah! Live like you're in a third world country to send companies doing things already illegal a message!

When a cable company can successfully sue another entity trying to provide the same internet service in a location, we have a problem.

Now, we wait for Google to come save us!

this is why i am glad i have centurylink. may or may not be better but i would loath having to deal with comcast. any good boradband competitors in the twin cities area? seems like there is centurylink comcast and usfamily along with mobile data plans.

Same here. I'm limited to 12 Mbps when Comcast gives I think 30 Mbps (possibly higher), but it's still enough for me and it's noticeably cheaper ($50/mo instead of ~$67 for Comcast). Plus I have never had a problem with CenturyLink that hasn't been resolved quickly and easily, and it never goes down.

Lmao, that reminds me of the internet I had back in college....

Forget the exact speed, couldn't have been more than 2-3Mbps with a 250MB rolling cap. That SUCKED.

I was in the dorms at EXACTLY the right time. 2002-2004 or so. They had just rolled out high speed a few years previously and weren't going crazy with blocking and capping people, so I had something like 7 Mbps down AND up with the only thing being I had to be careful about over-seeding torrents. They caught my friend who left his upload uncapped and pulled the plug on him for a month.

I've already put up with dial up, for a long time. I am not going backwards in quality of life because companies can bribe government officials to "allow" them to break the law. If Ford and GM started acting a fool, should I go back to horse and buggy?

They're regulated monopolies like other utilities, so I don't see what this has to do with capitalism.

<<The deal comes after Time Warner Cable rejected a $60bn bid from Charter Communications last month, calling their offer "grossly inadequate".>> - source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-26166729

Wait, what? last time I checked, $60 billion is more than $45 billion... Either some of the reporting is wrong, or the accounting is different.

I'm waiting until we see the scandal on tv. Comcast execs sent to jail for who knows what.

Internet in other countries is cheaper because of third parties. When I had charter or rcn their whole performance package with tv included was cheaper than all the Comcast bundles.

I know a lot of people hate on Comcast, and for good reason, but my department manages connectivity from carriers around the US. From fiber to T1 to DSL and cable for almost 600 locations, and Comcast provides better service than almost any other carrier. Comcast might suck, but they suck less than most other carriers. It's a sad statement on the industry as a whole.

These two companies don't compete anywhere to do they? I highly doubt either one is an "over builder" in any market.

With a merged company having 75% of the national market share I've got to hope that this would be shot down from a monopolistic standpoint.

Do comcast and time warner operate in the same markets anywhere in the US? I'm pretty sure they already have monopolies over their respective territories.

So both will remain as shitty as they are now probably.

My problem is that they are given monopolies over certain areas, but refuse to provide service for everyone in that area.

They told me it would cost me $18,000 to run cable to my house from the next closest house, which is only 400 feet away.

It might actually cost that much. They have to get the proper permits, parts, man hours, and equipment. Just because it would cost you $15 to do it, doesn't mean you're doing it right or legally.

The details of the deal aren't fully known, besides the money. Time Warner is also buying Comcast, not the other way around.

If you don't like the electric company don't use electricity. That simple right.

I can see that you're in touch with reality 🙄

I know time Warner is out in the west. When I was visiting parents in cali, they did not have Comcast out there. It's much bigger in the east coast.

I hate Comcast with a passion, and vowed in the past I'd never use them ever again in my lifetime.

But what I don't get is, if they have this much money to buy out another company. Why aren't they using this money instead to build infrastructure in areas which don't have any cable/broadband/dsl, and get a monopoly of customers that way? Instead they buy out a company in areas which already have high competition and then have to sell off customers to prevent monopoly/regulation issues?

It's funny money (ie: stock), not cash.

Looks like of the top 50 media markets they compete directly in New York (1), Kansas City (31) and Louisville (49). The merged company would have a strong presence in every one of the top 50 media markets except Phoenix (12), St. Louis (21), Greenville (37), Oklahoma City (41), Las Vegas (42), Birmingham (44) and Norfolk (45).
