FYI: Comcast buying Time Warner

With a merged company having 75% of the national market share I've got to hope that this would be shot down from a monopolistic standpoint.

Same here.

If Comcast has $44B laying around they need to lower their goddamn prices and increase their arbitrary caps.

I felt a great disturbance on the internet, as if millions of posts suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.

They already have monopolies in their respective market but it would certainly stifle any desire to improve things. I dumped cable TV for sat but still use it for the internet, how I hope they don't bring along the caps I know they will.

Just because Microsoft was too stupid to bribe the DoJ and their cronies doesn't mean a horrible telecom company won't forget to cross their T's and dot their I's. Then again, they weren't asleep at the wheel for the Tmobile/ATT merger, so maybe consumer protection is a real thing and not just a loophole joke to be figured out.

Where are you getting 75%?

Comcast will volunteer to divest about 3 million subscribers of the combined company to keep its market share below 30 percent and is willing to sell them to Charter, another person said.

Why? Aren't they both regulated legal monopolies in their markets already? Probably easier for the government to deal with one company anyway.

[goes into corner and cries]

This can only end in a mostly comical way. I predict internet now costing $100/mo for 3Mbps/1.5Mbps with a 500MB cap. After all that is "high speed". If you want fast internet you need to pay $250/mo. That will give you 20Mbps/5Mbps with a 1GB cap.

this is why i am glad i have centurylink. may or may not be better but i would loath having to deal with comcast. any good boradband competitors in the twin cities area? seems like there is centurylink comcast and usfamily along with mobile data plans.

Time to look into Uverse...

I swore years ago that I would pay extra if necessary to avoid paying a dime to AT&T, and that is still my viewpoint today. A friend has Uverse and pays more than I do for Bright House (Road Runner from TW) and has slower internet and less channels. Plus, AT&T's "customer service" makes Comcast's customer service look like Amazon by comparison.
