Each core is the same - they just run at different speed, so when you overclock the opterons, or compare the FX-60 to an opteron of the same speed, they'll have the same performance.

Since I paid for my own computer, I bought an Opteron 165, which runs at 2.7ghz - faster than the stock FX-60. However, I don't recommend overclocking to everyone, and since this is clearly a family computer, you're better off not overclocking.

Second, this appears to be the case of parents asking child to build a computer for the family. Most likely, his dad/family does absolutely nothing that involves the video card, so any money spent on it is a 'waste'. That's why he couldn't get a video card to match the performance of the CPU. My dad wanted the fastest CPU possible, and I got it for him - and it is coupled with an X300 or something lame like that. I don't live at home, so this isn't a problem for me, but I understand your reasoning.

There is nothing wrong with the FX-60 (besides performance/$$), but...
If you have the option:

a) Get a real power supply - I prefer Seasonic, but the others mentioned are also good
b) Get a raptor + a big fat SATA II for media.
c) Offer to add in you own cash to upgrade to a 7800GTX
d) Don't put numbers into words that fit phonetically (b4, l8r), it makes intelligent people want to hurt you.

How deceitfull AMD is about this. It uses Toledo core stepping E6 = X2 line

So, will the socket work on ALL 939 boards or is there a catch???

im almost sold!!!

CHEERS!!!

EDIT: the Opteron you bought is called 165 Denmark?

Dude do you have any common sense? Same architecture so if its running at a faster speed then what do you think the results will be. Thats probably why you wont see a comparison. The fx 60 has an unlocked multiplier and that is the only difference.

still waiting for those comparison articles of an opty @ 2.9 VS. an FX 60 ditch the synthetic benchmarks and get to the real gaming aticles

So you really believe that an Opteron and Fx-60 at 2.6ghz that the FX-60 is going to be faster just because you paid 3x more!?

show me an aritcle, or can you? Still waiting! its not that i wouldn't believe it, i would just like proof of what is better in gaming thats all.

to everyone giving him crap about getting an Fx-60 and not an opty 165/170...

everyone keeps saying that you can overclock an opty 165/170 to fx-60 speeds...

and you are absolutely right!

however, the fx-60 goes much higher on air than the optys do...

i've seen some fx-60 go upwards to 3.2 on air...

what exactly is the difference between the opteron 275 and 875

The 165 has 1 HT bus (so you can only run a single processor)
The 265 has 2 HT buses (so you can run two processors)
The 865 has 3 HT buses (so you can run four or more)

I see you got an EVGA 7800GT. Excellent choice. If you come up with some more cash before the step-up ends you could trade it in for a G71. :D A 7800GT is still a powerful card though, especially for $300.

Why a quad core? There had damn well better be an easy to use app to allow switching programs between cores if they go that route. I can't imagine any software being able to figure out how to optimize for four cores either. They're having a hard enough time with two.

but an opty costs 2/3rd less and also if you venture into that socket (939) thats all your money can buy being that its the end of the line for the 939
