Two people I know recently had their appendix removed. It starts as a stomach ache, then pain develops around the navel, and migrates to the lower right of the area. This happens withing 24 hours of the stomach ache. You then get to the point, quite rapidly, where you can't touch that area and the area to the upper right of groin, and you can barely stand up staight. If this happens, go to the ER immediately. In both cases I know of, they were operated on within hours of arrival at the ER...in order to avoid a rupture.

He isn't in trouble because of the surgery, he is in trouble because of the appendix bursting. If anything, the surgery has at least given him a chance.

For those interested in a detailed account of a recent appendicitis attack, read on. Otherwise skip to the last sentence.

Back in September I awakened about 2am with a horrible cramping feeling all across my abdomen (below navel). I felt like I had to go to the restroom but could not. See, I had this sensation about twice in the prior year and both mornings it would basically be fine by the time I woke up. I thought it was really bad gas or something. according to the Dr's later, mine had been low-level infected for over 6 months. Now I know why I felt so draggy and awful a lot of the time.

This one was much worse. I had no fever at 2am, I finally got back to sleep in a fetal position about 5am, woke up about 7am and was soaked with sweat from head to toe. My fever was 99.7 and the pain had then focused on a spot about halfway between my upper hip bone and navel and was very sharp.

I was waiting for the fever to start going down, it climbed .2 every half hour and at 101.0f and 9am I said "screw it, lets go to the hospital". Could not walk standing straight up.

Got there on 9/11 (Sunday) not another person in the ER, got right in. Spent about 2 hours with the assorted checking out of my entire body, questions, etc. Then 2 catscans, interpretation by a radioology person, digital exam, and confirmation about 11:30. Morphine injection as it was REALLY hurting then. I lost my Father about 2 years ago and have been very , well, fearful of dr's and hospitals since then (routine problem turned into septecemia). That was not helping.

At 11:30 my white cell count was 23,000

About 11:45 the surgeon arrived and assembled his little team and said "see you in there in about 15". Noon I was in the OR, getting ready to go under and strangely calm. They all shook my hand and said "see you in about 90 minutes. They did it laproscopically. 3 little places and at 1:30 I was awake again.

It hurt more that night than I thought it would. Pathology report came back that it was 2.2 times normal size for my age and body. Had a fluid-filled cyst approximately 2cm and was likely to break within 48 hours according to the report.

I thought I was lucky in that outcome, after reading about this, I KNOW I was.

God bless your uncle Goose and if he can't be saved, at least may it be quick.
