Im also working on getting another wire loom from a 3SGTE and a MK1 MR2 so I can relocate all the major electronics to behind the drivers seat. It will clean up the engine bay a LOT and make more room in the trunk.

That's kind of awesome. I wonder how it'd do in AZ with the emissions testing (fuel tank pressure check).

Dont they hook up right to the fuel filler to check that? I wondered how they would react to a vented gas cap.

Hmm Arizona pressure tests with a fuel cap adapter. I wonder if they'd just fail me outright for a cap like that, or pass because they couldn't test...

Err unless that comes with a neck designed for that cap you may have an issue. Looks like a motorcycle fuel door. Could always find a damaged gas tank and cut it up so you have a flush mount.still have filler neck issues...

damnit you are right. I need a gas tank to cut up to mount that lock onto. Time to search the local classifieds i guess.

Or do i REALLY need to spend $200 minimum for a fuel cap??? there has got to be a better way.

I'm not sure it was the first thing I found! The hunt continues! I'll find more after I leave my shop

which happens to be the exact thing you just found! and with it hidden behind the c-pillar i doubt most people could find it to open the Gas cap! great mind thinks alike

A guy from MR2OC says he has a friend that parts out bikes and that he should be able to find me a tank with lock/key for $50. SCORE. And hes in Canada too, for the cheap shipping.

I may end up just putting the fill spot on the side then, just for simplicity sake. Putting it behind the C-pillar would not be as easy as I once thought due to the small panel that attaches there beside the engine lid. Filling fuel on the side will be easier also.

The madness has begun.
Found a tank from a busted up kawasaki, Has a locking cap. Also a cut out from a smashed up MK1.

I made sure to remove the gas filler neck before doing any cutting. Dont wanna go boom.

Then I made a cardboard cut out of the exact size of the piece I need to weld into the quarter panel. I had already done a little cutting here.

Took out the grinder and committed myself to the project.

Ive ordered up paint to match. Waiting on a rubber fuel line to extend the filler neck. Next I need to figure out how to mount my air filter in there. It will take a little cutting of the inner panelling (need to enlarge the existing hole), but it wont be too invasive.
Im taking this sloooow. We've had over a foot of snow this past week, so Im in no rush to finish.

Hey Fuzzy,

I spent a couple hours last night reading your threads. I am new to the forum but stumbled across your 85 build and your 86 mk1.5 build. I was inspired. I am currently looking to purchase an 85 mk1. I was hoping you could give me some advice. It has 240k Km's on it. The current owner has been up front saying it burns oil heavy, the battery drains if not driven and it has the 5th gear pop out issue. He is asking a 1000 bucks CAD. Is this an okay price for a car in this condition? I like the idea of doing a swap one day but would hope to maybe just tune it up for this summer to drive and then dump money on it through the winter. I live in Edson, AB so I would love to know some of the local places you used for your rebuild on the 4age. This would be a fun car for weekends and not my dd. any advice or wisdom you could give would be greatly appreciated. I am looking at the car tomorrow and going for a test drive. Thanks in advance. I tried to PM you but it wouldn't let me as I don't have enough posts. I apologize for posting in here.

And the MR2 inspiration bug has been passed! It's quite contagious.

How's the body? Mk1s like to rot around the rear quarter panels. If the body is solid, it's not bad - battery draining when not used just means it needs a new battery (or it has a parasitic draw somewhere). 5th gear pop out is common with the C50 transmissions. The fix is replacing it with a C52 from a later Mk1. I'm not sure what they're going for now, but I think I paid 150 bucks for mine in 2005.

And..hahah...we infected another one. :awe:

Hey thanks. The body does have rust in back quarters. :| I plan on bringing my flashlight and magnet tomorrow to go look at it. Anything specific I should look at that would make me want to walk away from the car?

I'd do a compression test..but really at $1k, if the body is fairly solid and it runs/drives it may not be that bad of a deal. How many Mk1s are around there? Fuzzy may know how the selection is up there too...hard to find a running Mk1 under $2k here.
