Well I buggered up big time.

The other day I went out to work on the car. The plan was to take off the stock catalytic converter to check if it was plugged. The cat is integrated into the downpipe, is made of cast iron, and is heavy! Anyways, in the process of removing it I stipped one bolt and broke another.
So the plan now is to just get rid of the stock downpipe all together and mount up a ligthweight DP with the new turbo when it arrives.
Ive tried to do everything with the engine in the bay but that is proving to be an impossibility. Was not planning on dropping the engine this soon after the build, but it looks like I will have to.

I dropped the engine today in preparation for the new turbo.

Here is is without the turbo and upper downpipe section. You can clearly see the infamous "Hose From Hell" (has white heat wrap) and "Hose From Hell on Earth" (has spiderwebs on it) on either side of the oil filter base

Here are all the cast iron part NOT going back on. Im guessing a weight savings of around 40+ pounds. The stock catalytic converter (big thing on the left) is heeeeeaaavy. It wasnt plugged, so it wasnt the problem. Its gone now anyways. I have found a local guy who is selling a Berk Technology downpipe.

As I was dropping the engine I found numerous things that I could change on this engine to clean things up a little. Just random vacuum and coolant hoses that can either be rerouted or completely removed. IM going to give this engine no excuse for not running properly. One thing I was NOT happy about was that I found that the previous owner who installed a new clutch didnt replace all the bolts! I could look into this gap and see the flywheel - dirt/oil/water/crap could easily be collecting in there. Makes me want to pull the transmission off and take a peek inside to actually see how well things are put together in there.

And lastly, this is the compressor wheel of the stock CT26 turbo I removed today. It looks like the fins have been rubbing against the side some. I didnt take a picture of the other side with the ceramic wheel but there is obvious gapping between the fins and the wall. This turbo is probably no good anymore, what do you guys think? Sell able?

How's shaft play? Even if it's toast ATS might be able to use it as a core for a CT27.

Fuzzy- if you have some vacation time you want to burn sometime, you should come to Phoenix for a long weekend and help me get my V6 running. I'll even help out with the plane ticket. :awe:

how long do turbos last?

Varies...the one in my old Forester was replaced at 109k and it was toast. Some last much longer.

Ill make a video of the shaft play so you guys can judge how bad it is, Cuz I really don't know. I've just been so busy with work and dealing with renters over the past few days.
Jleee. This winter I plan to visit my parents who live in Yuma half the year. would be fun to run up there for a couple days.

Let's keep this thread PG, please.

Also, when you make the video, hold a tape measure or ruler up to it so viewers can accurately judge the movement.

They just gave me a $450 credit for my old ROM tune, so it's worth a shot - I'm not sure if they have a shortage of cores or not (they have a $300 core charge for a CT27 rebuild), but they may give you store credit. Never know till you ask! :D

List of parts in mail and arriving

Arrived:
Oil Pump
Water Pump
Fuel Filter
Timing Belt
Clutch Master Cylinder
Some gaskets
Berk Technology 3" downpipe (im concerned I may get boost creep with this pipe)

Still awaiting:
CT20B turbo - seller is definitely taking his time getting it in the mail. Kinda pissing me off.
Turbo Gasket kit
Oil pump gasket kit
Front main oil seal

Not all of my pictures were loading for some reason, but here are a few.

Took the transmission off to find a rather large stock pile of crud inside. I also noticed that the pivot point for the fork was completely dry - most likely the source of the squeaky clutch.

Looks like the stock flywheel and pressure plate but an afermarket friction disc inside, as the Previous Owner had noted. Im not going to touch it as its working fine as is. No doubt this car would benifit from a light weight flywheel but I gotta have a little bit of control on my spending, dont I?

As it sits right now. Im working nearly all weekend so I may not be able to get to touch this till monday, and by then hopefully the oil pump gasket set arrives.

getting that timing belt back on was a PITA! The exhaust cam gear kept wanting to slip back a tooth.

The CT20B turbo arrived today and has passed kitteh inspection.
DSC00161.jpg~original

Side by side the 20b and the 26 don’t look too much different. The difference is in the size of the air intake and the size of the shaft. The 20b has a larger intake and smaller shaft which allows it to spool up a little more quickly.
DSC00165.jpg~original

Here is the engine ready to accept the goods
DSC00163.jpg~original

First had to install the Berk Technology down pipe. Took a bit of work as the previous owner of the turbo had broke a couple studs, so those needed to come off. wasn’t a big deal, could still just barely fit two nuts onto them.
DSC00170.jpg~original

Then slapped it all together. I wrapped a couple hoses and the down pipe with some fiberglass heat protection.
DSC00175.jpg~original

Did the same for the piping in the engine bay.
DSC00176.jpg~original

Here was a gem of a bolt to get on. Holy mother of…. Its directly behind the turbo, is 27mm large and needed to be torqued down because its an oil feed line. I call it the Bolt From Hell. Took me a while to figure out how the hell to get it on.

So heres how she sits at the moment. Ready to be put back in. A few hours of work and she’ll be drivable once again. Have a busy few days so it may not get done till Sunday… but we’ll see.

Ah the banjo bolt... When I broke mine loose, it sounded almost like a .22 going off. It was really tight. With a lot of extensions and u-joints it's not too bad to get to (at least in a Mk2).

Props for kitteh inspection. :awe:

crazy that you could get at it with the engine IN the car. I had a hard time with it out.

Just noticed your downpipe... insulating those, at least in the Miata world, is a huge no-no. Nearly everyone who does it winds up roasting their down pipe into oblivion in a few thousand miles because the exhaust gases are so hot. I'm not sure if this is true with MR2s though, might be worth looking into.
