Fuzzydunlops 1991 MR2T with Gen4 Caldina.

I picked up a new project the other weekend. Im taking over this project from another guy that didnt have the time for it anymore.

1991 MR2 Turbo. Its Left hand drive which attracted me, as most MKII's up here are RHD. I am not keen on RHD, just think that it would get old quick.
Has T-Tops which most likely leak, but Ill fix that later.
Its a high miler, about 150k miles with a bit of rust here and there, but nothing Im too upset about so far.
Interior is near perfect.
All the wheel bearings and bushings feel good. But its missing sway bars
Needs: brakes, an engine, new wheels and rubber, then should be ready to go.

Along with it comes a Gen4 3SGTE from a Toyota Caldina. Unknown year, unkown mileage. The turbo has no shaft play, and timing side looks almost brand new. These engines come from a family car in Japan, so the engines are usually babied, lower mileage because of Japans strict vehicular laws, and on the average come in very good condition.

With it came a whole bunch of goodies.
Complete tune up kit: Water pump, oil pump, timing belt, all the necessary tensioners, pulleys, gaskets etc.
J&S Safeguard. A custom made wireloom from Wiregapinc.net.
I dont know if I should bother cracking it open though, because everything appears to be solid on the timing side.
Lucky for me I saved the alternator from the MK2 I took the engine out of a couple years ago. I had it tested, it was perfect, so that saves me about $250.

Tranny side has a new in box ACT 6puck clutch, a Lightweight flywheel, and a used 93+ LSD tranny.

For cooling there is a Primemr2 intercooler piping kit, what appears to be an ATSRacing intercooler and fan kit. All brand new in box with the bubble wrap still on it.

So now its just a matter of piecing together everything and figuring out what is still missing. Quite a few bolts are needed, some random hosing, but nearly everything is here.

For a while i did consider putting the Gen4 into my MK1 and putting all the older engine stuff into this MK2, but nearly everything I need to make this swap happen is already here, so i might as well commit to it.
The next question is to whether I should really commit to making this car something special with upgraded brakes, exhaust, etc... or just finish the swap and enjoy. I dunno.

Right now I have the wheels off and the bolts for brakes soaking in penetrating oil. Hopefully all the calipers are good, but it looks like I may need new rotors and pads all around.
I also ordered a whole bunch of random parts from primemr2.com to complete the swap.
See what happens. Snow is melting now, so soon I may be able to take the MK1 out. :fingerscrossed:

haha, axles shall be broken... Just maybe not on this car. This engine isn't a real power house, it just has better power curves and super quick spool. Also, the platform is better suited for higher power as well.
ya, I've been secretly craving a MKII for while now. Was looking for one to bomb around in during the winter, or when the mk1 is down. This car being a higher mileage car I don't need to be too concerned with rust and dings. I may even work on getting it track prepped as a new track was built here recently.
Autocross, maybe, as this engine would be perfect for it.

Also forgot to mention that the car came with Koni Yellow and eibach springs already.

sweet dude! Did your buddy have any regret about selling?

I don't think so, he's selling off his variety of projects to hopefully focus on building a drag car. But then again, he did say something along the lines of "a bit frustrating to gather all these parts and just have to let it all go, but I'm glad it's going to someone who will actually do something with it.". And also "I'm kinda excited to see what your can do with it". ... And "you'll have to show me it when it's done". So, ya, maybe he does kinda regret it

Engine in, test fit of pipes. Potato photo.

Waiting on a few essential missing pieces. I am missing the front engine mount (engine side) as an example. MR2 guys... those cross bars from the engine bay, are they structurally necessary? I dont have them either.

Also noticed this transmission does not have LSD as I originally thought, but it may not make too much of a difference.

A friend of mine had a set of cheap rims sitting in his garage that will work well enough on the car, 17x8 et40. The rear will be tucked a bit, but no big deal. Thinking of putting 215/40 front and 235/40 rear.

Other than that, I am pretty close to getting it on the road. Just need to finish getting everything connected, get the engine mount on, fill with fluids, and shes set.

Nice! Love those cars, should be a blast to drive once you get it all buttoned up.

BTW-Where do you keep your bike? I don't see it anywhere in the background.

hehe, funny.
Fine Ill post some photos for you! Its just dirty as I havent taken it out yet this year.
You can see the taillight and white plate just to the right of the engine in the first photo.
EDIT: to fill you guys in on why i thought Jules post was funny. Hes been ragging on me to post photos of my bike in another thread. I still havent yet.

new pads and rotors on. Everything works.
Had to source a front motor mount as It was missing. Installed.
Clutch bled and working.

I wired in the fuel pump with a relay so it can get power straight from battery and only turn on while the engine is cranking and running. Had everything hooked up properly from what I could see but the Damn thing wouldn't start. Struggled for an hour trying to figure it out. Then it dawned on me. It needs gas! Haha. Dumb. Strange how often the solution is the simplest one. I threw in some low grade stuff I had for my lawn mower and POW! It's alive.
here's a video of it after it warmed up a little.
Video

The exhaust is 3" apexi. It's loud but actually sounds impressive in person. I put the fujitsubo dual exit onto my MK1 and am Really happy with that.

I have a short list of things left to do:
1. Tires
2. Transmission fluid.
3. Bolt up all the plastic under body paneling.
4. Wire in intercooler fan. Need to decide how yet.
5. Figure out how to wire in the J&S safeguard: I think I got it.
6. Flush The coolant System and put coolant in: have water and cleaner in it currently.
7. Make a CD of popular songs between 1990 and 1992... This car has a stereo! Not used to that in my toys. I'm thinking nirvana, STP, GnR, RHCP.

tonight I checked compression. 150-165 dry after warm up across the board. Good. No oil leaks. No fluid leaks.

So close. So close.

Maiden voyage was on Saturday. It ran well but seemed very underpowered, then I saw smoke from the rear rotor. The e-brake cable seized and locked.

So today I unhooked the e-brake and drove around without it. Did 45 kilometers around town without an issue. Babying it most of the time because new clutch.

She's quick! The MK1.5 would probably keep up no problem, but this engine has the benefit of reliability. The fun part is seeing real time display from OBD2 bluetooth dongle. Its super cool! And handy to see problems if they may arise. Non so far. Alles klar!

Ill post some photos in a moment.

I missed this-

The cross bar is just a body brace (standard on turbo cars, not there on n/a cars). You don't need it, but you could probably find one for cheap.

Did you have a wiring harness as well, or did you do your own wiring adaptation?
