I picked up a new project the other weekend. Im taking over this project from another guy that didnt have the time for it anymore.
1991 MR2 Turbo. Its Left hand drive which attracted me, as most MKII's up here are RHD. I am not keen on RHD, just think that it would get old quick.
Has T-Tops which most likely leak, but Ill fix that later.
Its a high miler, about 150k miles with a bit of rust here and there, but nothing Im too upset about so far.
Interior is near perfect.
All the wheel bearings and bushings feel good. But its missing sway bars
Needs: brakes, an engine, new wheels and rubber, then should be ready to go.
Along with it comes a Gen4 3SGTE from a Toyota Caldina. Unknown year, unkown mileage. The turbo has no shaft play, and timing side looks almost brand new. These engines come from a family car in Japan, so the engines are usually babied, lower mileage because of Japans strict vehicular laws, and on the average come in very good condition.
With it came a whole bunch of goodies.
Complete tune up kit: Water pump, oil pump, timing belt, all the necessary tensioners, pulleys, gaskets etc.
J&S Safeguard. A custom made wireloom from Wiregapinc.net.
I dont know if I should bother cracking it open though, because everything appears to be solid on the timing side.
Lucky for me I saved the alternator from the MK2 I took the engine out of a couple years ago. I had it tested, it was perfect, so that saves me about $250.
Tranny side has a new in box ACT 6puck clutch, a Lightweight flywheel, and a used 93+ LSD tranny.
For cooling there is a Primemr2 intercooler piping kit, what appears to be an ATSRacing intercooler and fan kit. All brand new in box with the bubble wrap still on it.
So now its just a matter of piecing together everything and figuring out what is still missing. Quite a few bolts are needed, some random hosing, but nearly everything is here.
For a while i did consider putting the Gen4 into my MK1 and putting all the older engine stuff into this MK2, but nearly everything I need to make this swap happen is already here, so i might as well commit to it.
The next question is to whether I should really commit to making this car something special with upgraded brakes, exhaust, etc... or just finish the swap and enjoy. I dunno.
Right now I have the wheels off and the bolts for brakes soaking in penetrating oil. Hopefully all the calipers are good, but it looks like I may need new rotors and pads all around.
I also ordered a whole bunch of random parts from primemr2.com to complete the swap.
See what happens. Snow is melting now, so soon I may be able to take the MK1 out. :fingerscrossed:
