Some friend of mine insisted on that his GeForce "FX" 5200 was way better than my Radeon 9800Pro just because his card had some kind of weird Special Effects (FX) that make games look better and run faster... I would love to have a camera when he saw FarCry and DOOM3 running on my "humble" machine...

Some guy told me my FPS would double if I upgraded to an 8xAGP mobo for my 9500 Pro instead of the old crappy 4x that I had...

Thats happens more than you think...

I was with my dad at BestBuy looking at computers and a salesman saw us looking at a Sony VA10? computer for a moment. He asked if we wanted help so I asked what video card it was running. he said...

"Its a top of the line PCI express card that will do anything you throw at it" So I said - "Well, what card is it?" He says- "The brand new ATI X300, its really a tough card to beat"

I just rolled my eyes and walked away with a smerk on my face. My dad was like "what happened?" I just said - "We gotta get outta here, NOW! :Q

I love going into computer stores just to completely break out in laughter when they have no clue what they are talking about.

Maybe these stores should actually either get employees who know what they are talking about so they can sell the product much more effectively.

Or just buy better products so the employee doesnt have to make him or herself look like a complete moron.

I would disagree with you Dravyn. Because if I or any other ATer started working at best buy, I would end up confusing the crap out of them. I do like asking simple questions and continuing up to the hard ones (that I already know)

what kind of video card?
x300
PCI-E? or AGP?
uhhh....oh PCI-express
128 mb or 256 ?
no, it has 512
I am still talking about the vidcard
oh, uuuhhh ....1...2...8.....? i believe
that's not bad (sarcasm of course), DDR2 or DDR3?
I don't know.
mmmmmmmmmmm.....
well, how big's the HD?
250 gigabytes
What's the speed?
3.0 GHtz
No, the hard drive rotational speed?
oh, it's fast....
2, 8, 16 meg cache?
2 i think
IEDE or SATA?
SATA (without missing a beat, although package said IEDE clearly)
So, it's got 3.0 Pentium4 in it?
yep, it's super fast
mmmmmmmm
it'll do games at high setting without stuttering, it's one of the best PCs out there.
what else does it have?
well, it comes with a 17in LCD.
what the max resolution?
85 htz
mmmmmm ( I make seem like I am goin to buy it through out the entire speal)
And super bright too by the way....
mmmmmm well, I was looking at getting a 7800gtx, DFInforce4 LAN board, 4 pc3200 gig sticks of ram, and an AMD 4400 X2 proc. How would this compare to that?
uhhhhh (he just realized i was screwing with him)
(I smile and walk away)

This was about a month ago and the most amusing encounter I have had (he really thought he knew what he was talking about). I have done this about 3 other times over the years when me and my friends go to compusa and bestbuy. It's great harrassing the sales persons.

LOL!!! I had something like that happen when I was doing a chat on alienware. I'll start with the salesman. Here's the first try

Can I help you?
Yes I have a question about the cpu. How much cache does the 4000+ have (joking of course, just testing him before I got to my real question)
Ummmm, let me check...
.....
1024kb
okay, is that the clawhammer, or san deigo core,
let me check
.....
Please call --- --- ---- for alienware technical support.

Second try

Can I help you?

Yes, I'm wondering if that 4000+ is the san deigo core?
What's the san deigo core?
The manufacturing process...
....
90nm as opposed to the 130nm clawhammer,
...
Please call --- --- ---- for alienware technical support.

That is sort of unfair to rip on sales reps. They are trying to make a living and how in the world are they supposed to keep tracking nerdy internal core code names? I don't know, but I think it is pretty rude and mean to set out and make someone look like an idiot.

You also have to remember that sometimes there is a different answer to the same question depending on who you are talking too..

If a customer asked me if something was overclockable, I would tell him "No". Of course if he was a tech trying to just rip on someone, he would run to these forums and say "I just talked to this guy and he told me you could not overclock an A64! -- What an idiot sales rep! I know more than him!" Of course, the truth would be that I just told you "No" so that you do not ask me how to do it and cause problems for the company I work for.

There is more than one side to a coin and depending on who you are, you will get a different answer from me. There is the real tech nerdy answer, and there is the realistic comsumer answer. In many cases they do not agree in one.

No, it's not unfair to rip on salespeople because they spread disinformation and are pretty much the root of most of these funny stories. If the guy thinks a 3.0 ghz P4 with a x300 is going to "play games at high settings without stuttering" and is telling people that on a regular basis, there's a problem. The funniest thing I saw was the Best Buy sale for the "Doom 3 Dream Machine" which had I believe a P4 3.2 paired with a special version of the FX5200 that was even slower than the standard one. Designed for playing Doom3 at maximum settings, w00t!

I agree completely with ArchAngel.

Also, it's not a sales person's job to know everything there is to know about a computer... that's a tech support's job.

Sales is sales. Best Buy wants you to buy a computer and they need you to swipe that credit card... they'll say whatever propoganda it takes to get you to do that. And they can. It's legal.... this is America, and that's called marketing.

If you buy a PC without doing the proper research, then it's your own fault... not theirs. All a sales guy needs to tell you is whatever the specs are for the machine (whatever the label says). Also, his statement that "it'll do games at high setting without stuttering, it's one of the best PCs out there" is completely legit because he didn't specify WHAT games it will play flawlessly and he didn't say IT IS the best PC out there.

But I've degressed from this topic.

Speaking of salesmen, here's a decent story (I posted this around last Christmas time on this forum)...

My younger 1/2 sister (parents are divorced and re-married, and she's spoiled by her mom) was bugging my father for a new computer last year and he planned on getting one for himself too. So I went with him to Comp USA while trying to convince him the whole way that it was cheaper for me to build a system for them.

No use. After talking with the sales guy, my Dad decides a Compaq w/ a Celeron CPU @ 2.4GHz was a great buy because the sales guy convinced him that was a lot of processing power. Keep in mind my dad likes to play games too. So, I tried to at least turn my dad on to a Pentium 4 2.6 GHz they had there, but the price was "too high and he only got .2 more GHz speed out of the CPU." I tried to explain to him that Pentiums and Celerons are 2 totally different ballgames, but it was like trying to talk to a wall. Needless to say, he bought 2 of those Compaqs <cringe>.

After I scolded him the entire ride home, his basic reply to me was "I don't have time to wait for you to build me a computer because your sister is nagging me for one... so I need to bring it home now." Pathetic.

The real trajedy of this story is that I have experience in building computers for people, he knew that, and yet I had to sit there and watch him spend $1,700 on two useless piles of junk and I didn't have one bit of say in it. Talk about a kick in the nads.

Just goes to show you, you can't save everyone from the fire. Some people just walk freely right into the flames like mosquitos into a bug-zapper.

hmm u cant really expect a best buy type salesman to know what core it is, id be impressed that he knew how much cache it had. i bet most BB employes think its some type of currency
