I can't remember where but once I saw a picture of a person who caught himself on fire lighting a US flag. On it, it said "Cigarrete: $1, US Flag: $20, watching an idiot catch himself on fire: PRICELESS"

Anyone know where that pic is? Its probably floating around the web somewhere

It's funny you guys get so mad over it since he is exercising his rights as an American.

irony ++

Yeah, I know. Strange, isn't it. But seriously, Drew, I would defend his right to do so. If he actually did it, I would kick his ass. Yeah, I'd probably go to jail for assault, but that's also my right to decide. 😎

Violence seems to be popular with your kind.

So is sarcasm and exaggeration.

People seem to really hate flag burners, so violence is not out of the question.

Considering a woman was hanged in Iraq for waving at Coalition troops, that a man had his tongue pulled out/cut out for having contrary opinion... I'd say IRAQ qualifies as the "other place".

I think that flag burning is a form of speech, and should be protected. That being said, it would be really terrible if he lit his face on fire while lighting that smoke.

who cares?!!??!!? the flag allows people for protest...that is protest. If you dont like it you are going against what the flag grants.

I particularly love that line which goes something like, "If the flag is the symbol which protects freedom, then it is hypocritical to ban its desecration." My answer to this battle cry of the insanely liberal is burning the flag does not symbolize a stand, but instead symbolizes disrespect for the ideals which you lounge on each and every day.

It stands for the abuse of the freedoms which you are granted and the scorn for the country which allows you to open your mouth. It stands for some sort of unhappiness with the United States.

It represents your view that there is something wrong with America, and you are certainly entitled to your opinion.

So why not leave? Scared of oppression?

People, people, IT'S A FLAG! A PIECE OF CLOTH!

Try as these idiots might, they cannot burn the things for which the flag stands. I understand that burning the flag improperly is horribly disrespectful, but it is a protected act under the first amendment. I think that it says a lot more in favour of our country if we allow people to burn the flag than if we persecute those who burn the flag. The truest test of a nation is the manner in which it treats its detractors.

I agree. Seeing someone burn a flag just makes me more proud I live in a country that DOES allow that. That is why America is great, FREEDOM.

Indeed. Although I have never burned an American flag and have no desire to I WOULD light them up with glee if burning the flag were outlawed.
Some people seem to make the huge mistake of thinking that loud and highly visible political dissent hurts the US (wartime or not). In fact it's the opposite IMHO, it's one of the things thats great about America.

Burn the flag all you like. It's your right.
However, expect others around you to excercise thier right of expression by screaming thier disapproval in your face. 🙂

How ironic that so many of you would physically harm someone for exercising the right to free speech that that flag is a symbol of.

Though I do not agree with the people who burn the flag to make a point, I do believe they have the right to do so.
We have US flags on napkins, plates or stamps or clothing or underwear or what not ... am I desecrating the flag when I crumple my napkin and throw it away or eat off my plate. It is a symbol like anything else. It has great meaning to me but it may mean different things to different people.

Also, I think it is ironic that the US boyscouts say that the proper way to retire or dispose of a worn-out flag is to burn it

Agreed.

Although the burning of the flag is terribly disrespectful, in these days of foul-weather patriotism there are thousands of "ornamentally" hung flags that are hung improperly and disrespectfully as well. The flag is a living symbol of this country, the stars and stripes more than anything embody the true spirit of America. To see it tattered and torn from being flown behind a pickup in rain or shine is tantamount to finding voyeur pics of your grandma online, embarassing and disgusting at the same time.

It is, actually, and it's one of the most sacred events one can witness (when it's done properly). It is a ceremony done with great care and the utmost respect for the standard of our nation. Apparently most people are lucky to witness it once in their lives, I've been fortunate to witness it twice.
