If thats all the American flag means to you then, frankly, that is despicable.

Is it really the flag that is important in our country? How about the people and ideas? Why should a symbol be more important than the people that wave that symbol, or the ideas that blossom under that symbol?

Let me simplify this for you. In my mind (and in those of some burners) the American flag is the symbol that directly relates to these people and ideas. Burning that symbol in protest is a clear statement of disrespect against the values of our nation. If this is not so to you then please, elucidate me 🙂

To me a symbol is just that, a symbol. From your statements, it sounds like burning an American flag and burning and American are just as bad. To me, the American, his ideas, and his ideals are more important than something that respresents those things. Symbols are all well and good until they become as important as what they represent.

For the most part this is true, but my point is that symbolism is still quite alive and well in the minds of most, and for most flag burners, burning the flag is a protest against the ideas of a nation. If the flag were simply a worthless relic, I don't see why peple would even bother with it 🙂. There is a reason for the flag's existence. As a matter of fact I would like to qoute the poster who got me started on this rant:

In fact I recommend everyone burn a flag to show your American Pride. I have a stack of them that I use for fuel on those cold American winter nights, in my American fireplace. I also have an American flag beach towel, which doesn't catch on fire, but does get pretty hot on the sand. When I come out of the lake, I wipe the American E. Coli from my feet onto the towel. I wipe my drool with American flag napkins, salute my 47 star flag every morning (I refuse to acknowledge Alaska, Hawaii or North Dakota as states), and keep my American pole warm in my American flag boxers.

If you don't see anything wrong with this paragraph then more power to you. I for one think its rather comical. Which is why I didn't bother to reply. However this:

You disgust me for being disgusted at someone burning a piece of red, white and blue fabric.

is something a bit diferent. I for one don't think that burning the American flag is *patriotism*, I think its obvious that when someone burns the flag they're not exactly endorsing the country whose flag they're torching. The American flag is not just some meaningless symbol to me. You, however, can have and keep your opinions. What makes this country great though is the atmosphere of tolerance. Here you can burn your countries flag. However I prefer more mature ways of dealing with the rights and wrongs of my country than torching a national symbol.

Freedom of expression? See, that really pisses me off. The standard answer that is given when people get mad at flag burners is "It's his right, if you get mad at him you are an idiot". That's a bullshit answer. Yeah, it isn't illegal for him to burn it, but you all seem to think he is burning it to 'express his views'. Yeah, right. Flag burners these days do it because they are ignorant fools who want attention, that's it. They do it because it's 'trendy', in going against 'The Man'. Lighting the cigarette is simply icing on the cake of stupidity. I could go light a bible on fire, then drench a statue of Jesus in gas and burn that, to protest say, the Catholic church. Is it legal? Sure is. Is it appropriate? Hell no. Would I be a complete idiot for doing it? You bet.
If you can't understand that and appreciate the value of exercising a constitutional right in order to communicate with your countrymen, I pity you.
If you honestly believe he is doing that to 'communicate with his countrymen', then I am the one that pities you. He is an idiot, that's why we are all mad at him. He is burning it, like I said, because it's 'cool' and controversial. You think lighting his cig on there is to protest the war? Damn, he convinced me! Now, I don't have any problem with freedom of expression, like people like you seem to think, but I do have a problem with ignorant idiots like this guy. Somehow though, I have to tolerate his stupidity or else *I* am labeled as anti-American. No, you're wrong. Freedom of expression is not what these people are execising, it's Freedom of Ignorance, as was said by somebody else.

Well put.

That was getting long 😉

I think expressing your views about our country is being patriotic. Our country was founded on the blood of people that disagreed with the government to the point of revolution. Keep the tradition of American badasses questioning authority and showing their pride in themselves, their families, and their country.

Agreed though, just my opinion 🙂

It's so laughable.

You didn't have to look at the picture, he wasn't interfering with your life at all. If someone hadn't took a picture, you would have lived your life blissfully unaware of the flag burning.... wait, your life is still unaffected. No troops died, and apparently the fire died out somewhere between the flag and your house. You have no idea why he did it, and making up reasons like "he did it because it's cool" doesn't reflect the truth, just your storytelling abilities. He is expressing a view, and that view could be anything from "I protest killing done by my country" to "I like the way blue burns." One is as valid as the other. The beautiful thing is he doesn't need anyone's approval or justify his freedom to anyone.

Kicking someone's a$$ because you don't agree with them is illegal in America, therefore it must be Un-American. Burning a flag is legal in America, so it's an American thing to do. So if Un-American people deserve to get their a$$ kicked, then you guys should all be bending over. However, only another Un-American person can kick your a$$, because Americans wouldn't do that type of thing. I guess you guys need to meet outside the country and have a gigantic a$$ kicking circle. Since so many people can touch lick their toes, I think you're flexible enough to kick and be kicked at the same time.

In fact I recommend everyone burn a flag to show your American Pride. I have a stack of them that I use for fuel on those cold American winter nights, in my American fireplace. Proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free, where hmmm mmmm mmm....

Wow.. you disgust me.

LOL!

You disgust me for being disgusted at someone burning a piece of red, white and blue fabric. 😛

If thats all the American flag means to you then, frankly, that is despicable.

I know what the flag stands for, but it is still just a piece of cloth.

As if burning it actually destroys anything that it stands for.

I particularly love that line which goes something like, "If the flag is the symbol which protects freedom, then it is hypocritical to ban its desecration." My answer to this battle cry of the insanely liberal is burning the flag does not symbolize a stand, but instead symbolizes disrespect for the ideals which you lounge on each and every day.

It stands for the abuse of the freedoms which you are granted and the scorn for the country which allows you to open your mouth. It stands for some sort of unhappiness with the United States.

It represents your view that there is something wrong with America, and you are certainly entitled to your opinion.

So why not leave? Scared of oppression?

Yeah, so what? You should have the freedom to be ignorant in this country as well. I don't care if he's not doing it to make a point. I don't care if he's lighting a flag on fire just for sh1ts and giggles. The fact is he has the right to do it and I'm not going to get mad at him for doing it.

Or any european country, or russia?
Considering a woman was hanged in Iraq for waving at Coalition troops, that a man had his tongue pulled out/cut out for having contrary opinion... I'd say IRAQ qualifies as the "other place".

Oh, i get it, most people in this forum would the same thing happen to an american flag burner... so they want saddam?

But unfortunately (and it isn't that I don't care about Europeans) many Americans will not respect that opinion, let alone the person that has that opinion. They want everyone to follow without questioning.
They, AFAIK, are mindless zealots of an unknown cause.

To step in line and bow down before the almighty <insert name of old white man in white house enacting laws based on what corporations and law enforcement want no matter if it is good for the citizens or not>.
Ummm, I beliece that would be Uncle Sam..... I have an uncle named Sam........

Sometimes I wish I could start the Sovereign Nation of the Monkey...
And sometimes I wish I could start Wizard's International Consortium......

Nice EDIT there, I could have sworn I was being flamed <insert devilish grin here>.

Nah, I'm just another idiot on the internet. 😉

Seriously though, I hadn't quite read the entire passage that I'd qouted beforehand. I just liked that first paragraph

. Well anyway I might as well post the reply that I was going to give you (sans bold):

If you are doing poorly in school you get a Z.

Unless you start working harder. If you study more, get some one on one time with a tutor, etc you can bring that grade up. And I have never heard of a Z, its been a while though. 😛

If you are falling behind at work you get fired.

It really depends on how far behind and the company you work for.

If you have a problem then you'll have a bigger one. Unless of course you have a problem in the country you live in. Then they will kick you out. Because trying to fix any of the many problems America has is the right thing to do. WRONG!

I am not sure why that would be. What are you trying to hint at without having to explain your reasoning? I did mention I'm an idiot, and I happen to need help on this one. Unless you are agreeing with me, in which case I should go back and read through your posts again 😛

If it ever came to the US trying to take over the middle east, I do not think I would be the only one packing his bags.

I actually do agree with you, but I'm afraid that reading through my twisted logic probably won't help either you or me..... 😀
