What is the risk of carrying a plate around? Are you touching the food? No, the cook is. In order to carry the food you carry the plate. Anyway most restaurants have designated food runners to carry the plates to the table.

In all the years I worked in the restaurant industry, I can safely say that the wait staff has some of the dirtiest hands on the planet.

They touch EVERYTHING from tables and chairs, to dirty plates to money to ice scoops, to the rags they wipe the table with ... and they smoke, sneeze, wipe thier faces, cough and etc... and finding one that actually washes their hands more than a few times thru the entire shift is a rarity.

I agree. I notice that my fellow waiters rarely wash their hands. I am a germaphobe and wash my hands about 50 times a day. My hands are so dry that they crack. I wash my hands after I touch money, dirty plates, door handles when im working on the patio, nearly everything. I see most of my fellow waiters wash their hands about once a shift.

Whats even more disturbing is that I know cooks may wash their hands when they use the bathroom but then they touch the dirty door handle to leave and germs are on their hands again. I see them mopping or sweeping and then proceed to make food without washing their hands. I wish that cooks with cuts and scrapes on their hands, and there are a lot of injured hands in the food service industry would wear gloves. Gloves should be a requirement for preparing food.

I am the same as you. hahaha...

When I worked in the industry... i did everything from waitress, to bartender, to certified trainer to front of house manager to GM for TGIF's. Even when I was a waitress, when the health ppl walked in the door, the GM would not say... find the managers to make sure all is well.. they said.. FIND KAREN.

It is disgusting, isn't it? I eat out at ONLY two or three different places, I get the same servers in both, because I know they are just like me.

I am all for taking risks... but watching ppl be nasty???... no.

:)

We were in a diner one day and the bus boy sneezed into his hands, brought us water and asked if he could get us a drink. I told him point blank that I preferred to wait for someone who did not sneeze and not wash. Another time I watched a server wrapping up someone's meal. she got her finger in the gravy and actually licked it off her finger. When she came to take our order and asked what she could get for us, I told her.. clean hands for a start.

I am a bitch that way.

I agree about the gloves. But do you know how many times I have seen ppl wearing gloves that do stuff and go back to working with the food, never taking the gloves off.

We saw that in a Sam's Club while shopping once. One girl behind the counter... wearing gloves. She cut and served pizza, took money, made change, stuck her hand in a bucket, took out a rag to wipe off the counter... then moved on to the next customer... same gloves.

I rarely go out to eat, maybe once every few months. My wife goes out to eat about 5 times a week. It used to really get to me but I just try not to think about what goes on in the kitchen and behind the scenes.

When I wash my hands, I dont even turn the faucet off with my hands, I use the papertowels to turn it off because I think of the germs on the faucet.

How are those germs even harming you?

Listen... I think I got you beat.

I never open a door with my hands. I use my foot, a tissue, my shirt whatever. If I am going shopping and using a cart, I touch only the tips until I can get a store circular. I take two, one to put in the seat to put my handbag on (I dont own a handbag that cost less than $400) and use one to wrap around the cart handle.

If I have to go to the bathroom in public... i open the door with my foot, take a paper towel and use it to lock the door. I never, ever sit. I use the paper towel to get toilet paper. I use toilet paper or my foot to flush and open the door. I use the toilet paper to get soap, turn on the faucet. I then leave the water running while I get more paper towels. I use one to turn off the water, the other to dry my hands. Then I use that paper towel to open the door and throw it away from the open door.

My b/f laughs at me... but how many ppl touch themselves then door handles?

I am just a weirdo.

I would probably do that with the door handle and the shopping cart but would be to paranoid that people would think im a freak.

But whenever im in public and handle a shopping cart or a door handle, I think of all the germs I touched. I do not touch my face with my hands after that. I used to clean my steering wheel all the time but that was to much. The first thing I do when I get home is wash my hands for a long time. I prefer self check out at grocery stores because I know cashiers handle dirty cash all the time and then they touch your groceries.

When I go on long road trips, 6-12 hours, I prepare myself by not drinking any liquids so I dont have to use dirty restrooms on the trip.

Gas pump handles are a nightmare

I got a cell phone so I wouldnt have to use public payphones which are never cleaned

when I had roomates I wondered if they washed their hands after sex. I would look at the refrigerator door handle funny wondering if they did or not.

I don't care what ppl think. Really, I don't. I mean, just look around at the other ppl in the store... hahaha. I would rather have ppl think I am strange than to walk around touching a cart handle that someone picked their nose and touched. I wipe down the steering wheel in the car at least once every few days. the only ppl who drive my car is me and the b/f. I use soap and water to clean my fruit. I do the self check out, too. Going on long trips doesn't concern me too much, as I have the whole bathroom thing down to perfection. I keep baby wipes in the car at all times. And a little packet in my handbag. I live in NJ, so i dont have to worry about pumping gas. it is the interaction with paying by credit card that gets me. I am not a huge fan of ppl who work with the public handling my credit card.

Weirdest thing is... I am only that way with ppl. I have a house full of cats and I don't skeeve them at all.

I want to be a restaurant health inspector. I am fairly certain, that if I got to set a standard, that no restaurant in this country currently would pass it.

I used to either bury or hide the ice scoop. I personally put up a little holder that held the scoop in the upright position. And without fail... the servers would grab the handle, scoop ice and then drop the scoop in the ice.

used to piss me off more than i could ever explain.

but i agree, none would pass.

So you have herpes and you expect people to be OK with that? Maybe you shouldn't be a server if you know you're an infectious disease carrier. If I were your boss I would suggest techical support or car washing, instead of handling people's food.

Mike, you can possibly stop those sores before they ever appear. I get them very rarely now (once every couple of years), only after getting no rest at all and getting completely worn down out in cold weather. When I get so much as a tingle in my lip, I take acyclovir tablets. If I catch it in time, the most that will happen is a red area that goes away the same day.

Not necessary, I have a mirror right here. Nope, no infectious diseases eating my face! I guess I could even serve food if I wanted!

I totally agree!
let me popint out I think the manager or person in charge should have sent you home.
Personally coldsores and food don`t mix.
Doesn`t matter how good a waiter you are.
Personally I would never come back to an establishment ever again if i knew people who were sick or had a disease were working or more important serving me my food!

JAlexanders has a website..we should forward this thread to them.
I bet they would have a reply not to the liking of the OP...lol
