Do you realize how much harder it would have been for them to become multi-millionaires in a different country?

They enjoy their wealth because of this country.. not the other way around.

Not in federal alone, but I've paid in more than $24k taxes this year.
My parents paid quite a bit more than 24k in taxes last year... what's your point? Did it feel bad personally? Probably. But you have to realize that there are ultimate gains that come from proximal losses.

My point is to the poster of that thread and nothing more and that is not everyone here on this forum makes less than 24k per year. Nothing more or nothing less. Not sure what you're getting at.

To zendari, free market my ass. How about NO BID contracts in which those ice trays were sold at $27 vs the price of $0.89 that they should have been? Free?

I definately agree. If Blaco and Zen have such a problem with the misuse of "their" tax dollars why dont the 2 of you go after the people agreeing to buy those 1,000$ bolts that actually cost around 1.00$.

Instead of talking about the kids who only want something to eat?

Different people consider different spending wasteful. The libs don't seem to be going after our $68 trillion Medicare liability.

You don't seem to be fussing that your bs GOP administration boys passed a big ole Medicare prescription drug bill and, on top of that, kept the estimates falsly low until after passage. What are the GOP doing about that Medicare liability you speak of? They have full control of DC right now, you know?

Funny how you word that "working poor parents". If you were to look at statistics of poor people in this country you will find that they are more likely to own 2 televisions than none. They are more likely to subscribe to cable/satellite TV than not. They are more likely to consume alcohol each week than not to. Yet we must sacrifice tax dollars from everyone to pay for their childrens lunches. Ridiculous.

Edit: They are also more likely to own 2 cars than none. In fact, here's some facts.

http://www.heritage.org/Research/Welfare/bg1713.cfm

Those are the families receiving free lunch at school.
Gotta love how 60+% of welfare bums have cable TV.
Gee, the Heritage Foundation engaging in distorting logic and creating ways to criticize the poor.

Here's an assignment for Blanco and Zen. Read this thread:

Much along the same lines as that ridiculous Heritage Foundation article.

Considering you liberals are so generous, kind, and make so much more money than I do, maybe you can foot my share of the welfare bill! It should make you happy, you can send the checks directly to the government.

I am hardly a liberal. But if you are going to paint good people with a very broad "loser" brush simply because they happen to be on assistance you should expect a response. Your views on this topic are extremely myopic and mean.

We have a friend who is an accountant from the University of Washington. He has a ton of really liberal friends in Seattle that have him do their taxes every year.

"Try to pull some strings and some tricks so I can get out of paying a lot of taxes".

I guess they love to see these programs that Washington State spends a ton of money on get funded....as long as it's not their money. That's why taxing the rich unfairly is so easy. Most people aren't rich so they don't have a problem with it...couple that with the fact that hollywood has brainwashed people into thinking that rich people are fat, lazy, greedy, and evil...

So most people here are for funding free school meals because they think the children deserve it and really need it. Well I would hope to think that if they really thought that way and we cut the program all together, these same people that advocate it so whole-heartedly would be using their own time and money to give these children meals.

LOL, Zendari...you mean, mean conservative. Let me guess...you hate children don't you? :)

You're so mean Zendari, how dare you suggest spending cuts, lower taxes, and then babble on about free markets as if they played some sort of significant role in our economy.

When I came to this country my parents and I were on welfare for around a year. That allowed my parents to take some English courses and get adjusted to the new environment.

Both of them hold post-graduate degrees (from the venerable educational institutions of the former USSR), and now they make most likely far more money than Zendari would like them to make. I went to one of the top schools in the country, and they were (barely at that point) able to pay whatever needed to be paid on top of my scholarship (merit) and loans. Had they not had that year or so to learn the language, they would never have been able to accomplish what they did.

At the end of that period the rules were changed, and people on welfare were no longer allowed to take any kind of courses, or do anything else that's necessary IN ORDER TO GET OFF OF WELFARE. Instead, welfare recepients must do menial city jobs. So under the current (pushed for by republicans) rules, none of what happened would have been possible.

Agreed. Just as those who whole-heartedly support the war in Iraq should be over there fighting, and dying, for what they believe in. Why aren't you there Blanco?

I am willing to put my money where my mouth is are you?

Edit: In fact, I swear I will donate $1000 to the childrens charity of your choice as soon as I have absolute proof you are fighting in Iraq. :)

Inspiring story and kudos to your family (I'm being serious). However it doesn't explain how families were able to make names for themselves and go to school under similar conditions before welfare was around.

I guess my theory is that if we didn't spend so much money on these programs, there would be more money circulating around in the free markets which would, in turn, create more jobs and room for growth throughout the world. But since these programs came into existence, we rely on them too heavily.

That's a meaningless observation unless you can produce objective statistics demonstrating comparable numbers of families in similar circumstances were able to "make names for themselves" both before and after welfare programs were introduced.

The same logic applies to reducing military spending, of course, a topic you continue to avoid since challenged.

I'm also curious as to how exactly you think welfare programs reduce the amount of money circulating in the free markets? Unlike tax cuts for the wealthy, for example, the one thing we know for sure is that money spent on welfare very quickly returns to the economy. Folks on welfare generally are NOT squirreling away their money in investments or off-shore banks. They are spending it, using it to make ends meet, paying for groceries and other living expenses that directly increase sales of consumer goods.

In short, you might argue that welfare funding returns to the economy differently than military funding or tax cuts, but it's not accurate to suggest it is withdrawn from circulation.

It isn't completely withdrawn but it still has to keep going through the government and it still has to pay government workers that could otherwise be employed in the free markets which results in less taxes and better job creation.

The military is a neccessity and there's no excuse for our country not having the best military in the world because I believe we use it better than anyone else.

It cost me a whole 20 dollars for my portion of the free lunch program this year and it was well spent. Why don't you write your Reps and Senators and see what they say. You'll be hard pressed to find ANY that would agree with you. You think this poll is skewed one way, try the US Congress or Senate. I highly doubt that you would get one vote your way and you know it!
