Top Gear and Forza 4: From "Car Soccer" to "Car Bowling"

As part of the tie-up between Microsoft's Turn 10 Studios and the BBC's smash-hit motoring show, Top Gear, Forza Motorsports 4 will include a number of single-player and multiplayer modes ripped right from the TV show. Yes, it will include "Car Soccer."
The Turn 10 / Top Gear tie-up includes, in addition to the aforementioned multiplayer "Car Soccer" mode, it also includes Jeremy Clarkson providing audio commentary in the new car dealership-like "Autovista" feature, and single player career modes — like "Car Bowling" and a series of "Top Gear"-related Rivals challenges, "Star in a Reasonably-Priced Car" being chief among them.

"Car Bowling" is exactly what it sounds like — you knock down bowling pins with your car as you drive around the Top Gear test track.
The "Car Soccer" mode is modeled after two segments from the Top Gear TV show (Season eight, episode five and season six, episode one — for all you Top Gear fanatics out there) where the hosts played in a giant game of soccer between Volkswagen Foxes and Toyota Aygos. The best part? The mode isn't limited to just the Fox or 'yota, you can use any car you want and in any combination of cars that you want.
Top Gear isn't new to tie-ups with video games, starting with a very basic but still drivable version of their test track appearing around 2003 for the PC racing simulator, Grand Prix Legends. There's also a version of the test track for other PC simulators, including rFactor and World Racing 2.
But it wasn't until Grand Turismo 5's release last year that the track appeared in a mainstream console racer. I never got a chance to fully unlock all of the gameplay modes on the track because although I spent four infuriating hours trying to beat the caravan race level — I could never do it.

While the tie-up was cool because of the novelty, I eventually gave up in frustration of ever having a chance to play what I want and how I want on the Top Gear test track. Turn 10 Studios says they've learned from Sony on that one. Here's to hoping that's true.

Does the world’s greatest road course only exist in a game?

The team at Turn 10 Studios tried to design the best road race course ever for Forza Motorsport 4. The result? The all-new Bernese Alps track. Here's a first look at the track and how they made the magic happen.
This behind-the-scenes video chronicles the meticulous creation of the all-new Bernese Alps track in "Forza Motorsport 4," showcasing how the folks at Turn 10 Studios were able to use real world environments and bring them into the process of designing the course.
I've driven the virtual track myself and I can tell you it combines some brilliant turns, curves and surfaces to create a track that can go from easy to impossible depending on the car being driven, the level of driver aids used, and the loop being run. Like the famous Nürburgring, this course too features multiple loops.
In fact, I sort of feel like this course is like an Alps-based Nürburgring. Does that mean it's the best road course ever? That's totally subjective. But it's definitely in my list of the top five — and it's certainly a gorgeous road course to immerse yourself into.
Make the call for yourself when you see it live this October.

Thanks, RiDE.

Sad to see my favorite car isn't listed yet; I really hope they add the 2011 BMW 335i.

Is anyone else excited for this?

I've pre ordered the LCE. Comes with a 96 page top gear book (quite honestly not expecting much, these LCE things are never great value), 5 car VIP pack, 5 car pre order bonus pack which anyone who pre orders gets, 10 car American muscle pack (pretty excited for this), and a 5 car BMW pack (mostly custom liveries I think).

They have also announced the Season Pass package, which gets you 6 DLC packages plus the American Muscle pack. Yeah, some overlap with the LCE. Costs $30, apparently is a 30% saving on buying DLC standalone. DLC packs now cost 560 MS points apparently. I'm thinking about getting this one, but compared to the game itself, each car is much more expensive. $30 for 60 cars, 70 if you dont get the LCE. Not really an arm and a leg but expensive nonetheless. I mean its half the price of the game itself I guess. At least the standard edition.

Comes out in about 3 weeks.

Not really.

It looks like Forza 3 with slightly improved graphics. Autovista seems to be Turn 10's main talking point, but all I care about is racing.

I've bought the first 3 religiously on the first day, but I'm actually considering holding off on this one and going with F1 2011 instead.
The offline racing just doesn't do anything at all for me, although maybe if I got into multiplayer more I'd get more out of these games.

I have the collector's edition pre-ordered as well. I forget why I pre-ordered it over the normal edition though. Amazon doesn't list the extras since the LCE is sold out, so I can't see what swayed me.

I'm excited; yes. I'm a car guy, and new car sims always pique my interest.

That said, I'll wait for some reviews to roll in before dropping $60 on it. I want there to be enough worthwhile differences over F3 to make it worth my time. Especially since there are going to be SO many other great games out at that time...

While I want to get it and have the time to play, there are just too many games coming out that will consume my life. I have Madden and GOW3 right now that are barely touched and Uncharted, Rage, Skyrim, Dark Soul and Batman are all due out within the next 6 weeks.

I'll buy it and it will consume my free time for months, just like all the others. After the supreme disappointment of GT5 I am way overdue for my racing fix.

Do you have to have a gold account to get DLC? I'm considering the season pass but play all my online stuff on the PS3 now and haven't had gold in a year.(it's gotten good enough the 360 gold premium isn't worth it anymore) I'm not paying for gold to get DLC.
