I celebrate Christams as part of tradition passed down to me from my parents. Christmas has always had a strong family meaning to me.

Yes, I knw where every little thing we have today came from, from pagan, and christian, Nordic and Roman, etc.

And to be honest, the more I knew, the more it ruined it.

Christmas in my family had a slight religious background, but the main part was family. Always family.

And that's what Christmas is to me today. Family.

Just because I have no religious beliefs doesn't mean I have to shun religious days or traditions. You take the good, You take the bad, You take them both and there you have the facts of life.

The facts of life.

Yep, that's Christams

Groan...

<--Slaps forehead.

I agree with you though. Christmas is about family, friends and holiday cheer.

How ironic. Christmas origin has nothing to do with religion. This shows you how much people have been brain-washed into believing it.

Thats not true. Christmas origin is from the celebration of the birth of Christ. The gift giving part comes from when the wise men came to see Jesus they brought gifts. Christmas in its entirety was born out of the birth and celebration of Jesus. Now Christmas has come to mean different things besides that, but the origin of Christmas is undeniable.

Well, I am no athiest, but I am not a christian. That said, I do celebrate christmas, which has nothing to do with it original intent today. When I go to my gf's house for Christmas, I still join in prayer. It's what they do and I respect it.

CUrrently, however, my gf's dad has converted to the Johovas (sp?)....man, they piss me off. Stop trying to convert me!

yep.

It's ignorant and childish to choose this time to "make a stand" about some brain-dead, sophomoric issue that one might feel actually matters.

Maybe he doesn't have a life.

He could be Jehova's witness.

We had one of those in my previous department. The entire 300+ person department had to reshuffle all department-related parties and celebrations around that idiotic c*nt's beliefs.

No one could even say happy birthday to someone else if she was standing nearby, lest it incite some pointless inflammatory lecture about hell.

No. But I am forced to do the family stuff because of pressure from my family. As soon as I get away from them, it will all stop. I really only do it because I still get a bunch of gifts. If I have children, we will not be celebrating it. They will also be instructed that Santa Clause is not rea, if they ask, and that their friends' parents lie to their children.

You must be a blast.

Probably is.

I am the same, except for the children part. 😛

we already know you're a high school-aged internet atheist with worthless opinions and no real-life experience.

this does not surprise me.

Militant atheists are no worse than militant theists: you are just as incapable of having a worthwhile, educated, and open-minded discussion on the topic of faith as your knowledge on the subject is a product of your blindness.

<--not religious.

It's been a while since I read a Bible (by which I mean never), so I'm a bit fuzzy on the details, but I just can't recall any scripture where Jesus said "Lo, and they shall gather to celebrate my birth, though it shall not be on the anniversary of my birth, but on a day that corresponds to the winter solstice, because why should the pagans have all the fun? They shall gather among them a great many shiny trinkets, procured from local merchants who will play the same five songs ad nauseum. And they will give these gifts unto the children, and say that they were delivered by a giant elf who breaks into dwellings via the chimney. And they will drink heartily of egg nog and pass out in front of whatever televised sporting event they can find with their hands resting comfortably on their nether regions. Yay, let it be known this day, that I have died so that you may save 50% on a new 50 inch flatpanel television."

The word of the Lord.

I remember when I found out there was no Santa Claus at around age 4, my dominant reaction was annoyance that my parents had lied to me, and I didn't understand why they'd done it.

Heh. I'm an atheist. (Thanks Catholicism!) However I enjoy the secular festivities.

Since I have a two year old and some cats that would NOT allow us to have a tree, I improvised with work's color laser printer.

This was the prototype. It'll be better next year! 🙂

I think this is funny!

Everybody laughed and though it was clever. 🙂

of course I celebrate Christmas, the materialist side of me can't wait to spend money on gifts every year.

I get a bottle of scotch from my aunt, so that's always nice. Other than that it's a completely unremarkable day for me. I couldn't care less so voted 'don't know / care'.

Agnostic atheist, and I would celebrate Christmas even though it's non-secular because it's a decent holiday. Gift-giving, etc.

Agnostic and atheist are mutually exclusive concepts.

Prayer: how to do nothing and feel like you did something.

Actually, prayer is a form of meditation and meditation is shown to have significant health and psychological benefits.

None of which have anything to do with any supposed deity; it's merely a coincidence.
