Your inability to understand logic astounds me. If you can use a machine to plant and harvest, you can use one to irrigate. Therefore the farm being too big to water is a false idea.

You continue to ignore the fact that there isn't enough water to irrigate all the farms.
You also haven't answered the fact that in terms of cost it would cost a fantastically huge amount of money to irrigate all the farms while just buying up the excess in good years when its cheap and selling it in bad years when it costs more would actually make money.

USDA says 300,000 farms are irrigated.

that's a start. only what 2 million more farms at 900million acres to go!

btw blade you got a link? i suspect i know where the farms are that get irrigated but would like confirmation.

BUT if you don't irrigate them EVERYTHING WILL COST TRIPLE! THE WORLD WILL END!~! ZOMGH WE WILL QALL DIE\

Isn't it worth any cost to save the world?

edit: Re: not enough water, you can re-use water. irrigate some fields, it evaporates and then falls as rain. recycle works!

It's funny that everytime people start noticing a dangerous trend, then someone comes along and starts calling them crazy. Who will be crazy in the end?

I recommend to everyone that you begin buying canned foods with long shelf life. The next few years could be very lean.

good god you are fucking idiot..

You are the one who doesn't understand what even an idiot can explain. So who is the true idiot?

It's not rocket science.

If irrigation costs more than TRIPLE EVERYTHING IN THE WORLD, then I agree it's too expensive.

If not, IT SAVES US MONEY. So why didn't we do it?

you are thick headed. its been explained. IF you are to stupid to understand i can't help you.

In VERY few parts of the US would it be a good idea. problem is we farm over 80% of the us. most not near water. perhaps one day when you move out of your mothers basement and hit puberty you will discover how the real world works.

Oh no it's not near water :( How do the farmers live? They must die of dehydration without water!

First of all, did you even bother to read my post about problems with your desalinization plants?

Secondly, ever hear of aquifer? Drought = aquifer is getting lower, not enough water for all crops.

Do you not understand what TRIPLE THE PRICE OF EVERYTHING means? Bring the water in in trucks for all I care. If it's really going to destroy the economy of the entire planet than even 100 trillion dollars would be a small price to pay.

Goodness, not just financial cost but other cost for desalinization plants. Read the article before open your mouth, make your look like a fool. Seriously.

What does desalinization have to do with bringing water in trucks? You get a damn milk truck and fill it with fresh water from Canada and drive it back to the farm. Ta-da, magical solution, drought handled.

And you say I am the fool...

edit: BTW your article is useless opinion piece by "Mel", apparently some random blogger with zero credentials. Nice try.

Now you are trolling. Do you know how how many trucks would it be to handle the vast land of agriculture in the US? Read this = http://web.mit.edu/12.000/www/m2012/finalwebsite/problem/agriculture.shtml#crops

Water withdrawals for irrigation in the Western states total 143,000,000 acre feet per year

Here is another link from the government about problems with salinization, enough credentials for you? = http://montereybay.noaa.gov/resourcepro/resmanissues/desalination.html

LOL @ your suggestion about trucking water by trucks for agriculture. This is not make believe world. And do you know that water from Canada is NOT limitless?

Maybe you could get those people who are going to starve to death due to lack of corn to drive some of the trucks?

So basically what I am getting here is that you guys say the corn is dying, we are all going to die or suffer because we run out of food, inflation is going out of control and we will pay triple the current prices. Basically life as we know it is over because of this drought.

But any potential solution to this drought is too expensive.

I guess we are fucked then, oh well.

Maybe the next intelligent species to evolve on this planet will figure out that plants need a reliable source of water.

Yep you are right, we are all gonna die, we've never survived droughts.

Goodness, can you get it through your head? It is not just financial expensive but it is NOT feasible to truck the VAST amount of water for US agriculture. It is impossible to do so logistically.
