Food Allergies: How common are they?

I have a friend who insists I have food allergies... especially since on a day to day basis, random things I eat make my pulse race and I get sweaty... I personally don't think it's food, but I thought I would ask you guys: How common are food allergies?

I work in a food allergy laboratory.

Roughly 7 million americans have some kind of food allergy/hypersensitivity.

Since I'm in an environment where almost every patient has asthma or an allergy of some kind, I have a skewed view of how prevalent food allergies are, but food allergies seem to be on the rise in industrialized nations

They are very prevalent. My daughter has extreme allergies to nuts/dairy/eggs, my son is allergic to kiwi fruit. I have a very good friend who is in his mid 30's and suddenly developed an extreme allergy to dairy products and she has had to use an epipen 3 times.

From the symptoms, I wouldn't be surprised if you have mild food allergies.

My blood pressure seems to go up a lot after I eat. For instance, I haven't eaten anything today, and my blood pressure is normal (Yes, I took it). But if I were to go right now and have a bagel, or a vegetable wrap from the place downtown, or a sandwich, or a bowl of soup, or almost anything I can think of (even kashi bothers me), my BP and heart rate goes up. I sometimes wonder if there is a common ingredient I'm missing.

Right now, my pulse is 62. Guarantee you if I were to eat it would jump to the 80's or 90's.

I have food allergies. I cannot eat fresh fruits. I can drink juice and apple pies. BUT I CAN'T EAT DIRECT CONTACT WITH FRUITS

FTL?

sounds like you miiiiiiiight have a hypersensitivity to wheat. Just a wild guess, based on the foods you listed.

from what I could gather from the MD's scattered around the lab, most food allergy reactions result in a rise in heart rate and a *lowering* in blood pressure.

How much time elapses between ingestion and the symptoms?

Food allergies are not that common but most people who have food allergies have 'masked' food allergies.

Do you know what you are eating that typically causes the episodes or does it appear to be random things?

Do you speak from experience? Do you truly recommend that book?

Ignore any practitioner who says that most diseases are caused by faulty nutrition or can be remedied by taking supplements.

By the same token... do not place your trust in the FDA and large food company conglomerates to protect and do what is best for your health. The FDA doesn't pay enough to hire and keep top scientific minds and food companies are out to make money regardless of whether or not all the processed food they stuff on the shelves is creating various health epidemics.

I think I might be starting to develop something. I've noticed after eating pizza at a certain place that my throat feels scratchy and I feel like I need to clear it as well as cough a little. This also seems to happen after eating steak sandwiches and animal crackers. I'm guessing some kind of grain allergy. But white bread doesn't seem to affect me at all, so I'm not sure.

lol!
sorry. not to poke fun at your allergy, but the combination of all-caps and babby-esque formation of the sentence made me LOL.
