Because AF1 doesnt disseminate its flight plans except on a need to know basis.

Love teh false New York Post headline!

That facts are buried in the article.

Since the President wasn't on the plane the plane wasn't Air Force One. Yes, that is an important designation since only the Air Force aircraft carrying the President is designated Air Force One.

But, that clarified someone just lost their White House appointment!

Technically thats true. I dont think any deception was intended. I suppose they could have garnered more fear by saying "747 with F16's trailing it buzzes NYC!"? The decoy AF1 is still called AF1 though. As you know.

Not an Obama issue, just a "what the heck were they thinking?!" issue. Who was the idiot that came up with that idea?

Hell, I work almost right next to Pittsburgh Airport, and it's not uncommon to walk out some days and be able to look up and see into the windows of the planes as they're coming in to land / take off.

Just to clarify there are three airports around NYC, but they have never been allowed to fly planes low around manhattan, even before 9/11. I believe 9/11 extended the restriction and height limitations. What AF1 was doing is something commercial jets would not of been allowed to do even before 9/11. The three airports would be Newark, JFK, Laguardia.

I mean the 747 buzzed the statue of liberty, in pittsburgh you have planes buzzing buildings?

Meh, sorry to see we need to post disclaimers such as "not bashing Obama but" on threads.

Back in GWB's days, anyone, anywhere, doing anything stupid and receiving a government paycheck was blamed on the President.

no, no, no. It's Obama's fault.....

/somehow, someway, it must be.....
//heh, not an "obama" bash thread - but more of the pussy "rightwingers" grasping for something to attack with....

I wonder why Fear No Evil hasn`t caughgt wind of this yet...heheheee
Obama is in for it bigtime...rofl

I'm starting to get a cult following. I don't blame Obama for this. I blame Red Dawn and Harvey.
Lol...you're failing to fit their steorotype. I think they're starting to miss Winnar.

Obama gets blame?

I'm not implying that that OP is putting the blame solely on the white house or Obama, but if you read some of the comment sections attached to stories covering this piece of news, you'd think that Obama himself was flying the jet and cackling just to piss off God-fearing, gun-loving patriots of these here united states.

Reading comprehension much? Hypersensitive much?

No one blamed Obama, so don't get your shorts in a twist. Obama appeared unaware of the op until after the fact, and he was pretty pissed when he found out.

The whole incident was the product of a stupid, ill conceived idea followed up by piss poor communication.

I'm not sure the communication was piss poor, other than NYC staff to the mayor. There are security reasons they might not have publically announced the flight plan.

Especially because the low flight path would make it an easier target.

I was surprised how much New Yorker reacted to it, for what it's worth.

ummmm 3000 people murdered by low flying planes... and you are surprised??

The people in NY lived 9-11. We watched it on TV like it was a movie. I bet everyone in the City knows someone who died on 9-11 or knows of someone who knows someone who died.

I'd seriously love to know why they thought doing this on a monday in the middle of a business day seemed like a good idea as opposed to early AM sunday or something.

I understand, but since Obama wasn't on the Plane and it was only for Publicity(that worked!) it seems to me that kind of procedure could/should have been not applied.

I think the bottom line is that it was an incredibly stupid idea. I mean seriously... for all the flak Bush got for his MA photo op...

I'm not making the analogy between Bush and Obama, since Obama had no apparent knowledge of this, but in terms of really stupid stunts by an administration, this is pretty damn close to the top. Somebody was just plain not thinking.

Give Obama a break. Its not his fault. Its the fault of the people he vetted and hired. The buck(and responsibility) stops with Biden.

You were suprised by how much New York reacted? 9/11 is something everyone is reminded of almost daily. Personally I commute on 78 in NJ and everytime I drive back from work on the pulaski skyway I notice the fact that the twin towers are no longer in the NYC skyline, I am reminded 5 days a week. A lot of people died, hundreds of times more people were directly connected to a death, your apparent callousness is pretty sad.

I was in DC on 9/11, a block from the White House, a suspected target of the 4th plane, and one of my brothers-in-law was in the Pentagon when it was hit. Luckily, he got out fine. I agree with Craig234 here - New Yorkers are over-reacting to this.

Perhaps you're the exception, not the rule. Someone with some common sense should have second-guessed this "opportunity". Obviously no one did, because if they had, it would have died on the table right then and there.

By the way, I think everyone can stop trying to be Obama's bodyguard. I have only skimmed parts of the thread, but I haven't seen anyone even hint that this is on his shoulders.

I work in Downtown Manhattan and my building faces Battery Park. I had a perfect view of the 747 and it's fighter jet escort as they made their rounds. I honestly wasn't worried by the plane with AF1 colors, being escorted by a fighter. I figured it had to be some training exercise. For those that were here on 9/11, however, I could see how that would make people nervous. While the planes were flying pretty low, they stayed over the water, and didn't actually come close to any buildings, at least to my recollection.

By the third fly around, my coworkers had matched the planes colors to google image searches of AF1, and no one was worried. The building security announced later that it was a planned training exercise/photo op.

what seems so laughable is that the no one in the administration publicly admits to knowing about it, passing the blame off to other people.

Heck, even the whitehouse press secretary didnt have any info and had no idea what was going on. Neither did the homeland security secretary or Obama. Im not going to outright blame Obama, but come on....no one else in authority knew what was going on? This is AF1 we are talking about. There are precedures for this that envolve the secrete service all the way up. So either they just dont want to own up to it, or they really were oblivious.

Either way, it doesnt exactly scream confidence in the administration when something as simple as this gets out of control. Maybe they should work on thier organization/communication skills in the future.

So if a low flying plane was headed straight to the pentagon, about two thousand feet off the ground, with pentagon officials uninformed about it they would not evacuate the building? Your brother would calmly stay in the building? Again remember they are completely uninformed about the flyby.

The 747 was far far below the common flight deck guys, it was a thousand feet above the staute of liberty and that is fucking low. The people did not overreact, they responded like rational human beings who see a threat for a second time and take action.

it was a photo op. why the fuck would the presidant need to be told about it? im sure he has more important ways to spend his time.
