If this story actually went down the way described in that piece, then yeah that's beyond the pale.

But sounds like this is some banana republic clinic with haitian doctors - yep it's south florida.

Barack Obama voted against a bill that would have protected infants born alive having survived an abortion attempt! ;)

Something about the child infringing on the mother's rights... And Pelosi regards babies as a burden to her state. This is becoming a Government that the people are becoming a nuisance to and not a government for the people.

Wait, let me get this straight.

You're pro-choice, and you know what goes on at an abortion clinic, yet you find this sickening?

Do you know what happens during a typical abortion procedure? Ever witnessed one, or seen the aftermath?

I'm pro-choice too, but I don't pretend that a fetus that died due to extreme prematurity is more sickening than a fetus that has it's skull crushed and brains sucked through a tube during a successful abortion.

That talking point was debunked a long time ago.

There is a difference between being "pro-choice" and flat-out cheering on abortion.

Yep, saw a few last semester when I was shadowing a doctor who had a few patients who he had to go see in abortion clinics. Their are certain moral standards society must adhere too when protecting its own population. Abortions are fine, but when the baby is born the baby is now a citizen of the West, or specifically the United States. They are now given every right that we guarantee as a society and as a people, rights that make the West the better civilization. Barbarically killing them after they are born is just that, an act of barbarism that should not be tolerated. Since the child was born, he deserved every right we as a society bestow upon them, including the right to life. There are programs in place if the mother does not want the child, and a legal system in place to take action against the doctor for birthing the child instead of aborting the fetus.

Exactly. That child born live regardless of your views on abortion must be protected. If there were such a law in place, then there would be little question of murder charges being filed.

I'm pro choice and I agree with this.

Again, very interesting. Remember that pro-choice laws don't infringe on the rights of pro-life mothers, but pro-life laws DO infringe on the rights of pro-choice mothers.

So which version is "for the people"?

Fetuses can't vote.

has anybody in this thread read what the article claims took place? Tragic? yes. But I could hardly accuse the doctor of anything worse than bad time management:

Renelique said he had advised the patient to come in early as a precaution, and that when he was en route to the clinic, he was called to tend to another patient having an emergency.

He said the clinic staff members didn't tell him about the delivery when he arrived.

Oh, and if the clinic did not have access to any other medical staff to handle the situation, the clinic should probably be accused of bad management as well.

Per se Manslaughter - the baby was born, which makes it a person in legal sense.

It wasn't viable. I guess all those mothers who have miscarriages are guilty of manslaughter, flushing their "babies" down the toilet and all.

Really? You are going to try and defend what this guy did?
A lot of people arent viable, even as adults. Should be toss them into the trash as well?

I defend what this guy did. How's it any worse than vacuuming the baby/eviscerating it?

Of course on a moral ground you are correct. However not everybody holds the same moral code or see's abortion for what you or I do. From a legal standpoint when a baby is delivered it is protected under our law and afforded constitutional as well as human rights. Dropping it on the floor and letting it bleed out violates both.

Huh, when did start becoming such an advocate of universal health care?

How does this apply to UHC?

You seem to be say that the fetus has the right to medical care.

I seem to remember Ron Paul stating that he witnessed a situation such as this when he was a young doctor, and thus shaped his views on abortion altogether. This might happen allot more than people care to admit.

23 weeks is almost six months. Isn't that the very upper limit of the time most states let abortions happen? I'm surprised it's allowed to even happen in the first place being so late.

That has nothing to do with UHC.

If people actually witnessed all aspects of the various abortion procedures (yes there are movies available on the internet), then I would feel that they have a moral right to an opinion on the subject. Beware...not for the faint of heart.

It's not a fetus after it's born, it's a child. The child does not have the right to free healthcare, but the mother is obligated to provide care, and the doctor is obligated to provide life-saving care (though it doesn't sound like a doctor was present). No one has the right to hasten the child's death (as is alleged to have happened).

That is pretty sick; murder seems like an appropriate charge.
Against the mom, maybe.

His mistake was not killing the fetus first before it exited the mother's body.

Any women here want to chime in?
It's definitely a fine line between what's right and wrong. Thinking about it rationally, it shouldn't really matter whether the baby was killed in utero or outside the mother, but the latter just seems far more reprehensible to me for some reason.

Kind of OT, but 23 weeks is pretty late as well. Isn't this approaching the limits of how late you can get an abortion in the US (except for certain circumstances of course, such as the mother's health being at risk)? I've never been that fond of late term abortions for this exact reason, at such a late stage of development the baby is extremely viable.

Me too. He understands what abortion is...although I disagree with his pro-choice position, I fully respect him for taking an honest look at the stark reality here...a very, very difficult thing to witness.

That doesn't make any difference - if I get diagnosed with a terminal disease I still retain all my rights as a person. Also the miscarriage argument is retarded for lack of better term - the fetus dies before it becomes a person in legal sense....

Fixed for you. Good thing we base our rules on reason, not emotional response to gory pictures or videos. To me abortion is no different than any other surgery

Then why is this incident at all reprehensible to you?
