Fixed: Yeah, not happy with this HD6950 (excessive heat with multimonitor problem)

Fits fine in the case.

First problem the new CCC wont install (demo/preview whatever), and the old CCC is an ergonomic nightmare, its worse than the one I remember from years ago.

Second problem, it idles at 66C on the desktop and ramps up to stupid temperatures and levels of noise as soon as a game is launched, before shutting down. Temps above 95C, and before you ask my case is fine foe air cooling. Besides I've not even had time to put the sides back on yet.

Third problem, random programs look like ass. Window live mail text is bizarrely blurry but firefox is ok. :\

I've not had chance to try any video yet but this puppy is going back to the kennel, hopefully the replacement might be OK. 😡

Edit: I'm going to bed.😡

Edit for anyone not reading the thread: This problem is due to running more than one monitor of differing resolutions. If you have low temps with 1 monitor attached thats fine and lovely but it has nothing to do with my situation.

My solution from later in the thread.

Right very quick follow up then I have to go.

Cat 10:12a hotfix linked earlier in the thread.

Ticked enable overdrive.

Installed afterburner 2.1.0 beta 5.

Leave the core clock alone, dial down the memory as low as you can go without corruption (mines 675) this automatically drags the core clock down to 250. (bolded is where I was going wrong earlier).

Set up your auto 2d/3d profiles in afterburner and set up a fan profile that cools but doesn't annoy you too much.

You will have to mess around with the rivatuner stats server to remove some apps being falsly flagged as 3d when they arnt. (click on the i on the upper right of after buner and check the active 3d process line.)

Good luck.

what brand is it?
Bummer for you man. People with 6950 are raging to flash theirs to 6970 and you're stuck with a dud. Return it ASAP!

Turn of the SSAA to fix the blurry or fuzzy text in windows. As for the temps, something's off or bad. Which one did you get? Brand/model...

I've installed the CCC 10.12 Preview thing (that's what the latest download says) on two different systems already with no problems. I get my ASUS 6970 next week I think so we'll see what happens with it.

My 6970 idles at 58-61c but thats running 500mhz core (250+ mhz faster than usual due to dual monitors vs a single monitor) and my case does not have great airflow. Once under load I get up to 91c max with the fans becoming barely audible after hours of gaming. It really does sound like you have a dud as by all reports the 6950 runs a few degrees cooler than the 6970, even at the same speeds (something to do with the higher voltage ram maybe?)

Sorry you are having problems! I know how frustrating it can be at times.

I am running Win 7 64 so the files below may not be exactly what you'd want.

Before I fired up my XFX 6950 I removed all the ATI/AMD drivers etc. I could. And then did a fresh install of 10.12 CCC Preview and then the Hotfix.

It's PURRING and idles around 40-44C with an ambient room temperature of 22-23C.

Is it possible you are having an issue because of old drivers or software like Afterburner etc.?

At least you will know if it's a bad card or airflow if the replacement runs just as hot. I installed 10.12a hotfix drivers and didn't bother with the previews, from what I've read those are the ones to use with the 6900 series for the moment. Good luck, sucks things weren't great out of the box.

Did you install the right drivers? i did something similar by mistake off AMD's site a little while ago when i upgraded my HD 6950 to HD 6970 and installed HD 6970 CF.

AMD has their stupid "CCC Preview" Package listed first - it's 110 MB or so and it doesn't even include the display driver. Everything will look like crap, run like crap and not have thermal management - just like you describe.

If that is what you did, use ATI's Catalyst Express Uninstall and then install the 75 MB *regular* CCC/display driver package.

Did you reinstall Windows?

If your a hardware junkie like most of us are and are not at least imaging you can at least reinstall windows when you make a big change and it does not work. Ask anyone who works for a retailer or graphics card company how many cards are fine that are sent back for errors...

Treat your overclocked pc more like a sports car and less like a yugo...

Just disconnected my secondary monitor and my clocks dropped down to 250/150 and the temps down to low 40's, reconnect secondary monitor, temps 65 and clocks are 450/1250.

That really sucks. Given that these cards are pretty much designed for multi monitor, lots of memory/eyefinaty options/ability to chain lots of monitors, you'd think that they would put more effort into fixing that situation.

Edit😱n the plus side it unlocks fine.

Where the hell do you get the hotfix drivers from on AMD's site?

Whatever I put in takes me to the 10:12 drivers.😵

{Wheres the rage emoticon?}

Apparently yes. Turned it off and text looks fine now which is weird. 😵

It does so because morphological AA is designed to work on display output, it does not take into account anything beyond antialiasing the entire picture. That's why this mode works in games that normally do not support any AA, like SC2.

Makes sense I suppose, it just threw me. I'm not used to having AA issues when on the desktop.

Maybe AMD could make it so it detects when a 3d app is open and only run it then, or have that option in the CCC.

I think my only problems now are temps and noise.

LOL, this reads like a company response when someone complains about their product on Newegg or a compny BBS. 😉

Anyway - try reinstalling drivers, otherwise it sounds like this card was a dud.
