I am considering joining a basketball league. Full-court 4-on-4 basketball every night. How good of a workout is that compared to jogging or swimming?

Not as good. Its stop and go cardio. You need something that will keep your heart rate up.

What kind of league runs 4 on 4?

thats a really good workout, but compared to jogging or swimming, it would have to depend on the intesity of your workouts

ps: are you conditioned enough to play in this league, cuz 5 on 5 b-ball is much easier, not as much running, compared to 4 on 4 espcially if its full court

it will be good for burning fat because it's like a HIIT program. but if you are interested in cardio endurance, I believe jogging or swimming would be better for you.

Much more fun probably than either of the other two you mentioned. The stop and go aspect of it with the constant heart rate increase will be very beneficial. You'll develop your fast twitch muscles and overall get into good shape. I say go for it. I always got shin splints from playing too much basketball in the 'hood growing up, but you probably won't have that problem.

you might be "running" all the time, but if it is a good league, you have ot be battaling for rebounds and going for loose balls. But still 30 min of cardio is much tougher than 30 min of b-ball, b-ball u got to play for hours

Dude, go for it! Basketball is hard work and competitive, but really fun. I'm sorry but jogging is so boring. Swimming is good but finding a decent and affordable pool is not easy.

Play basketball while you still can because when you're older you wouldn't be able to handle the intensity. Just look at the pros, basketball players are some of the best shape athletes ever.

I have access to a great pool, but swimming is boring too and it screws up your ears. :)

I'll never be near that kinda shape, but at least I enjoy it!

depends on how hard you go at it. you can play for hours, slacking off on defense and it'll be an ineffective cardio workout. or you can go full bore and push yourself hard.....try that for an hour and it'll be quite a workout.

While it might not burn as much per minute as running or swimming, you typically do it longer and burn as much, if not more. Plus you are increasing flexibility and strengthening lateral muscles that you wouldn't otherwise develop and work while running or swimming.

It's also got the advantage that you will most likely enjoy it more and therefore choose to do it more often and not put it off like you can easily do other solo types of exercising.

If you are looking for a good full body cardio workout, swimming is what you want. You can increase stamina by practicing hypoxic breathing techniques, and burn calories faster than just running.

/edit to break the monotony of long sets I use a waterproof radio, but only rarely, like on sets >1000meters

I agree. B-ball, football, baseball, etc. can never stack up to an equivalent amount of time if ur running or swimming. But I beg to differ about basketball players being some of the fittest athletes in the world. I'd put one of ur super athletes against an average triathlete any day of the week. If ur joints can take it, run on top of the basketball. I personally row crew and i believe that this is an awesome form of exercise because it is really really low impact.

it will be a good cardio work out, if you actually keep running. When i play bball, the big guys just stand near the middle and the smaller guys are playing fullcourt, btw, where do you hear about theese kind of leagues? who do i talk to?

I dunno about you guys, but when I ran the point in a full court 5 on 5 game, I was beat. We did end up playing like 3 games in a row, till we finally got beat and had to wait for our next ups. Even though its stop and go, you WILL BE SORE the next morning but its a good feeling.

It depends on 'what type of person you are'.

MANY people find it easier to run/swim/ cycle etc at a 'constant' pace you as you conserve energy this way and your body is more efficient at this then STOP AND START sports like Bball/ Rugby/ Football etc.

Same for for the Bballer. You get him to run 30mins non stop and he will suffer badly also. You get cross over effects of training but you want to be specific to maximise things.

I would say 30mins of bball is better then 30mins of cardio for 'overall' fitness. BUT it really depends on what type of fitness you want to work on. Will this help you run for 30minutes better? A bit, then if you did say no cardio. But it would not be the same if you say wanted to improve your 30min run distance/ time etc. If you want that type of fitness you would be better off training to run.

Bball is crazy on your fitness.

Bball > jogging for overall fitness

Lots of jumping, rebounding, shooting, blocking, arms waving, lots of change in direction, hand eye co ordination skills, spacial awareness etc

The stop start nature of Bball will be AMAZING for your fitness :)

If you do this even 3x a week you will get in great shape in no time.
4v4 full court is TOUGH
