I am considering joining a basketball league. Full-court 4-on-4 basketball every night. How good of a workout is that compared to jogging or swimming?

Not as good. Its stop and go cardio. You need something that will keep your heart rate up.
Just a small-time local thing, not a big time league.Originally posted by: axelfox
What kind of league runs 4 on 4?![]()

I have access to a great pool, but swimming is boring too and it screws up your ears.Originally posted by: ricochet
Dude, go for it! Basketball is hard work and competitive, but really fun. I'm sorry but jogging is so boring. Swimming is good but finding a decent and affordable pool is not easy.
I'll never be near that kinda shape, but at least I enjoy it!Play basketball while you still can because when you're older you wouldn't be able to handle the intensity. Just look at the pros, basketball players are some of the best shape athletes ever.

Yeah, it must be small, if they can only go 4 on 4!

While it might not burn as much per minute as running or swimming, you typically do it longer and burn as much, if not more. Plus you are increasing flexibility and strengthening lateral muscles that you wouldn't otherwise develop and work while running or swimming.
It's also got the advantage that you will most likely enjoy it more and therefore choose to do it more often and not put it off like you can easily do other solo types of exercising.

it will be a good cardio work out, if you actually keep running. When i play bball, the big guys just stand near the middle and the smaller guys are playing fullcourt, btw, where do you hear about theese kind of leagues? who do i talk to?
Yeah, this is a private gym. Friend called and asked me to join.Originally posted by: iamme
intramural leagues at your college should have these leagues. or a private gym with basketball courts.Originally posted by: platinumike

If you are looking for a good full body cardio workout, swimming is what you want. You can increase stamina by practicing hypoxic breathing techniques, and burn calories faster than just running.
/edit to break the monotony of long sets I use a waterproof radio, but only rarely, like on sets >1000meters

you might be "running" all the time, but if it is a good league, you have ot be battaling for rebounds and going for loose balls. But still 30 min of cardio is much tougher than 30 min of b-ball, b-ball u got to play for hours
