first time driving in the snow...*update* /w cost now

as I exited the pretty much emptied parking lot, I lost control a bit. so I decided that I need some driving in snow pratice in the parking lot.

it was fun for drifting in snow and stuffs. anyways, I lost control and hit a curb. 🙁

knocked out my alignment and my car no longer go straight anymore. the left wheel is fine, but the right wheel is slightly sided right. anyone know how much the damage is?

lesson learned: drive as slow as you can when you turn.

my car is a 96 subura impreza L. I never spin tho. AWD Power 😀

edit:
alloy wheel: $100 with mounting
alignment $65

steering knockle(spelling?)
ball joint
wheel bearing
total for about $520 with labors.

so about $700 to fix it up. 🙁
no more money for snow tyres and brake. 🙁

Congratulations, you learned the hard way. Most skilled drivers lose control once, regain it before hitting anything, and never do it again. Did you squeal like a little girl and let go of the wheel and slam on the brakes? 😉

I was going to fast before I realized I couldn't make the turn. by the time I realized that, I didn't have time to brake. 🙁

this is just off the top of my head... and is my weak area in knowledge of cars.
bent control arm and maybe trailing arm

I'm not too sure on price, but if i had to guess anywhere from 60-300$ for the control arm. no idea on trailing arm.

Yes you can spin. AWD only helps get traction when your foot is on the gas, otherwise it behaves just like any other car.

(former OBS owner who spun into a guardrail in the snow)
 
yeah, I spun on my first time driving in the snow. it just takes some getting used to (ie: learning *not* to accelerate while turning).

because of my job, though, I need to drive through unplowed roads on a regular basis during the winter. there have been a couple times where I'd have smashed my car up pretty bad if it weren't for the fact that I was the only car on the road. just go slow and take it easy 🙂

yes. but until some money magically appears in my bank account, I'm stuck in my sh!tty sedan 😉

hopefully this upcoming winter will be my last, though. once my roommate is making enough money to support himself, I'm moving to Cali 😎

That is the nice thing about having a sh!tty sedan though... you don't care if it gets beat up! 😀 (and therefore you can have more fun in the snow😛).

my first time i had no problems

ive always had a small car of some kind but driving on the ice/snow is easy. you go slow...really really really really slow. AT least, you do in this area; we only get a few inches a year usually just once, maybe twice; so only the major roads get cleaned off; and even then its still very ice for a day or two. Since its so rare; not many people go out so going slow isn't a problem and generally isn't holding anyone up.

i *once* somehow spun out onto the shoulder of the road in a 96 grand am, i think i corrected too fast when i felt like i was going out of control. The rear of the car slid and I was going broadside down the road for a number of feet (atsomething like 10 or 15mph) and I realized I wasnt going to stop, so I pulled right and landed as perfectly as I could have wanted on the shoulder. After about 15 minutes of rocking it back and forth slowly(while a number of SUV drivers who NEVER bothered to stop and see if I needed help drove by), I drove myself out of it. that was the only trouble ive ever had in the ice/snow.
 
i swear all the noobs here have curbed their subaru at least once a season here. it gets annoying on the subaru forums with all the babies crying that their rim is fucked, or they need an alignment now.

not to rip on the op, at least you were doing it in an empty parking lot.
 
man its soo fun to drive on the snow on a empty parking lot just as loong as you dont hit anything hehe leason learned

One time I was playing around in the empty parking lot of a local mall. Or at least I thought it was empty, until I hit one of those divider curbs that was completely hidden under the snow. Just a bent rim, it was a steelie I use for winter so it didn't matter much.
