Now that you learned that lesson, here's lesson #2. No matter how careful of a driver you are, snow will manage to get the best of ya. I was at a stop sign, COMPLETELY STOPPED. Then... my car started to drift sideways to the curb. No idea what the hell I was supposed to do at that point besides wait...

Makes me wanna kill the damn southern-state drivers who think tearing around the mountains in their 2WD sport car with touring tires is a fun and good idea. We have laws requiring 4WD/AWD and chains under certain conditions for a reason. Of course, that's not to forgive the fools who think AWD/4WD makes them impervious to sliding (Berthoud and Loveland passes anyone?).

I guess I was pretty lucky when it came to snow...I took time to get to know how to drive in the stuff, and my first car was RWD so I had to learn WELL! I'm a pretty good snow driver.

BTW, I drove a friend's Subaru once and it was pretty easy to slide the rear out with a little application of the accelerator...so don't feel TOO confident.

Kudos for doing things the RIGHT way in a parking lot. Next time use a parking lot without hidden curbs ;)

Didn't see this mentioned but one of the best reasons (imo) to have an outside thermometer for your car is to know when black-ice is a probable danger. If the temp is right around freezing then the ground may be warm enough to turn the snowfall to liquid. This isn't terrible so long as there's constant traffic, but if it cools some and/or there's a lull in traffic along a stretch of road, then the ground may cool enough for the liquid to freeze into a nice little lake of black-ice that you can't see.
