I seem to recall a thread very similar to this LAST winter. Anyone else remember that one?

btw, take it and get an alignment. That should be the only problem, unless you hit the curb very hard, in which case, you might have bent something.

Is your car shift or automatic? If it is automatic, you should shift to 2 (if you lose control) for a few seconds then to 1 and you should be fine.

It happened to me before when I was driving downhills. It was pretty scary.

I took drivers ed in Montana during the winter...and I never once lost control of the car. Now I basically whip my car all over on empty roads when we have a good amount of snow. This year sucks though, so little snow.

This is in Buffalo right ? Well ya know Buffalo snow is like no other. ;) I came outta south campus and 180'd my SUV on a left turn cause I floored it as a 4WD "test". :)

Losing control is fine... but hitting something is bad... you don't really learn anything when you hit something. Best way to drive in the snow is to learn how your car reacts to sudden moves first... away from curbs, even if you're in an empty lot. :D

my first time i had no problems

n00b ;)

ive always had a small car of some kind but driving on the ice/snow is easy. you go slow...really really really really slow. AT least, you do in this area; we only get a few inches a year usually just once, maybe twice; so only the major roads get cleaned off; and even then its still very ice for a day or two. Since its so rare; not many people go out so going slow isn't a problem and generally isn't holding anyone up.

Bad advice. Very bad. There are two types of bad drivers in the snow: Those that go too fast, and those that go too slow. If you aren't confident enough to go more than 10 mph, then stay at home.

If you only get a few inches a year, then why are you giving advice in the first place?!?!

Agreed. A different analogy in my opinion is the two types of bad drivers - of any season - are "Unconfident" and "Incompetent" :p

What i learned when i was 16.....

Never drive on hills when it snows badly. I could't stop and went past a stop sign and eneded up stopping in the inersection. I was going less than 5 mph too.....good thing no one was on the road.

I am 90% sure"something" is bent. the car is quite undrivable now. I can't even go over 40mph. damn :(:(:(

I am gonna get it fix asap!!!

No doubt. I was in 4WD (not that that matters going downhill and braking) ... I was light on my brakes cause I didn't want to lock them (only RearABS)... well my front started slipping and I just lost it... I was only going like 5mph down a hill! Anyway, I started spinning around (this is a different 180 than what I posted before)... and just as I was about to hit a telephone pole on the side of the road with my rear end (forward facing up the hill now)... I got off the brakes and jammed on the accelerator (really the only thing I could do). Accident avoided. :) 4WD saved me there.

There was no way I could've avoided that situation other than not to attempt that hill on that icy night. Rear-only ABS doesn't help. :|

AWD helps
Studded snow tires is even better :)
I haven't screwed around with regular tires since 98 when its winter time.
My mom almost got herself killed by a semi in Oct when she couldn't stop coming down a hill to the highway with all seasons. Semi was going 50 MPH, 2ft from her front bumper.

hahaha. back in hs it was snowing and i had to drop a friend of mine home. i decided to take this turn onto her street a little fast so that i would drift. well, the car's momentum kept it going slightly straight into the turn so i ended up hopping the curb and sliding into her neighbor's front yard. it was so awesome. (all this in a 93 ford taurus)

edit: nothing happened to the car since the snow was falling pretty heavily.

if you wanna take a turn fast in the snow, cut the wheel and pull the "e" break. its fun.

Better than sliding and crashing your parents new car into your co-workers car, as your boss looks on, and your co-worker happens to come outside as you're surveying the damage because he had just clocked off work.

ouch...when I was a junior in HS, I was trying to scare my g/f and her friend who were in the backseat...I kinda drifted around a snowy corner, at relatively low speed, but fast enough to lose traction...came within half a foot of the mailboxes before I started going straight again.

at least I succeeded in scaring them...and myself. :p

HEhe

I love watching N00Bs drive in the snow. :)

Sorry bout your car though.

It MAY just need an alignment, hopefully you didn't bend anything.

If its just and alignment, you are looking at ~$50. If there's more to the damage, just drop your pants and bend over.

Snow newbs are great. I've had the privledge of watching 2 people slide into dithces in the past week, and then called a tow truck for them as I tried not to laugh.

Where I live in GA we don't get snow (maybe 2 inches every other year).

No, we get ICE. I'd rather drive in the snow than on ice!

Happens to the best of us. Kudos for practicing, sorry to hear it was so expensive. Must've hit pretty good to need a new knuckle, joint and bearing.
