4870 softmodded to a V8700. (amateur game modeler I don't really enjoy gaming itself that much. Fun to mod them though. :)) I want to upgrade to DX11 and the latest OGL/OCL capable cards, but need a card that can be softmodded, as I'm broke-as and can't afford a real pro card. Or, even a top of the line Gaming card, which wouldn't work as well, anyway.

seems that way. if you think about the gtx680 is actually pretty slow considering it has TWICE the shading power of the gtx580.

But it has a lower pixel fill rate than gtx580. It would be nice to see a reputable website do an investigation between the hd7970 and the gtx680, concentrating on overclocking the vram and it's effects on overall performance.

Maybe we can get some users here to run some benchmarks for us just with the vram overclocked (to different levels). Anyone interested?

Don't forget the significantly improved tessellation, and texture fillrate:

GTX580 Texture Fill Rate: 49408 MTexels/sec
GTX680 Texture Fill Rate: 128768 MTexels/sec

FP16 texture throughput is twice as fast on the 680. Yet 680 is just 30-35% faster.

The 680 only has 87% of 580's pixel fillrate. (32 vs. 48 ROPs in the 580).

That's why I am not sure why rumuors had GK110 just 25-30% faster. If GTX780 has more ROPs and 384/512-bit memory bus, 50% is not out of the question since both the pixel fill rate and memory bandwidth would be lifted way above 580's levels.

As they are right now, without changes, I'd still take a 7970 over a 670 at ~$50 more and over the 680 for ~$50 less. (There's this app called Luxrender that would make all the difference for me.) The card is a more versatile, better rounded product.

I am totally with you. If there is a particular application which you use that benefits greatly from one architecture/product over the other, even if the vast majority of the forum recommends one card over the other, the programs the end user runs ultimately is what matters. There are plenty of guys who bought GTX460s for Folding @ Home despite the mid-range NV card being overall inferior to say HD5870. If you run Luxrender, bitcoin mining, MilkyWay @ Home, Collatz Conjecture, etc. GTX680 is fairy dust compared to the 7970.

Keep in mind there are other factors that contribute. To be clear, no one knows what GK110 is going to perform like. It might be +50%? Typically though the top card isn't that much faster. There's other functions the 780 will use it's computing power on, just as Tahiti does over Pitcairn.

Anyway, it's looking like the GK110 is going to be a next Gen part. By then, with hopefully a mature 28nm process we could be looking at 30% clock increase. That should assure that GK110 will be 50% faster.

yea i dont see how this hurts amd much, if anything there's no point getting a gtx680 as this is right there also

Didn't stop gamers from buying the GTX 580, when there was intense price/performance choice with the GTX 570, HD 6970 and HD 6950.

The difference here is dynamic turbo. On previous gen 2nd tier, you actually HAD to manually OC if you want to reach top tier performance. Here, the card does it for you as long as its running cool.

Common users will just see "stock" out of box benchmarks with gtx670 matching gtx680 performance.

True but the flag-ship also has dynamic turbo, too.

ie. Both dynamic OC: gtx670 turbo 1.3ghz, gtx680 turbo 1.15ghz. That's the point. Custom pcb 670 with good coolers > reference 680s, out of the box, no need for user input like previous gen.

if this early leak holds, custom 670 will obsolete the current high-end.

This could definitely be a great card to pick up. The cards just below the top-end usually have much better MIR deals and specials as well, so it is conceivable to get this card for $350-380 if a good deal is offered. 2x this card could be a VERY sweet SLI setup for those that need it.

If two of these cards can beat a 1200$ 690 the 690 purchasers won't be terribly happy ;)

So does anyone know exactly when the NDA expires?

May 10th, 9am EDT. As for when they're available for sale, don't know, could be 9am or could be midnight (or any time on the 10th I guess).

Does the NDA apply to what time they're available for sale too?

f5,f5,f5,f5,f5.

That is the future of the gtx670 if nvidia can't hold a good supply on these when they debut, only the ones with the golden ticket could purchase one.

If we are lucky perhaps they could be stockpiling a hoard of them now to meet the huge demand on release date, this thing will more then likely fly off the chain but maybe i'm a bit dreamy and have higher expectations.

Depends on how good NV's yields are, if its "lower than expected", there should be more gtx670 skus than gtx680. ;)

Based on limited data and there may be indeed some additional value with AIB differentiation GTX-670's with exotic cooling with the way GPU boost handles thermals and TDP -- don't really disagree but need more samplings of data.

AMD should bring out the secret sauce - unlockable HD7950 and drop its price to $350.
