Firestone oil change $11.99

JEDI

Lifer
Walmart has been offering $11.99 oil changes (including filter) for years. I just noticed this week that the Firestone shop near me has a BIG sign in their front window for $11.99 also. (they may have had it for a while, but i just noticed it.)

yeah walmart for causing lower prices of oil changes. Most of the $19.99 shops near me have lowered their prices and they might go lower now that firestone is matching Walmart.

i wonder how long jiffy lube will stay in business with $25 oil changes....

Firestone is the last place I would tell any one to take there car. I ALMOST worked at a Firestone and was told how things would be done if I accepted the job, so I know how they work, and turned down the job.

explain! I've heard things too but never from someone that almost worked there

I can say that Argo and I'm not.

Wix and Castrol is where it's at in my place, unless of course you want synthetic, then it's Amsoil.

I went to Wal-Mart to get my oil changed last Wednesday. Cost $11.97 and I was out in 15 minutes. Now THAT is what I call service 😀

You can if you buy junk, which is exactly what they use.

I've heard opinions that differ from yours. The oil in my 2000 Prizm has mostly been changed at Wal-Mart for two and a half years now. No problems, and cheaper.
I do them myself on my Beetle, but that's different.

yea if I drove a beetle, I wouldn't take it in either 😛

Why Castrol, just out of curiosity?

It's not really all that great. It's better than Walmart's SuperTech, and also Mobil's conventional oils.. but heh.

Valvoline All-Climate, Citgo SuperGard, 76 Lubricants Guardol QLT, Shell Formula Shell, Pennzoil Multigrade, Motorcraft SuperPremium.. are all better.

Speaking for 10W-30 only.

😉

It would be very interesting to do an oil price/performance chart. I suppose the above may not mean a whole lot if Castrol is like 5x cheaper or something.

So because your 2.5 year old car hasn't exhibited problems, the cheap oil at walmart is perfectly fine? It's cheap stuff. How else do you think they can over a $12 oil change (not including the extra crap they may try and sell you)? They use the cheapest filters and oil they can find. It probably IS fine, but that doesn't change the fact that it's cheap oil. The important thing is that $1.50 oil and $5 is probably not as big a diff as people would like to believe.

Nice nakedfrog 🙂

I have a small fleet of aircooled german automobiles as well 🙂

i don't trust jiffy-lube, walmart, poop-boys, or any of those service centers. i change it myself...except when it's -50 degrees outside.

...then i take it to Roger's shop 😀

I only use Mobil 1 and K&N oil filters. More money, but the piece of mind is worth it to me. I wish places started making deals for people who "bring thier own," finding a shop that will do it for you without wanting to charge you full price is annoying.
I wish I could fit under my car! 🙁

I do that but I will not guarantee the parts, if something fails, you are on your own and I only charge for labor, $5.

The amount of refining done to the oils, the more ash, zinc and other impurities detract from the oils longevity and performance.

Prove it.

Castrol GTX 10W-30:

Viscosity Index = 143
Pour Point = -22F
Flash Point = 415F
High Temp/High Shear = 3.10
NOACK % weight loss = 13%
Total Base Number = 5.0

The pour point sucks, flash point is satisfactory at best. It is quite shear stable, which is it's only saving grace. 😉 The TBN of 5.0 doesen't really matter as long as you're changing the oil every 3,000 miles.

Valvoline All-Climate 10W-30:

VI = 135
PP = -27F
FP = 421F
HT/HS = 2.90
NOACK = 13%
TBN = 7.0

A bit of a tradeoff; stable to a higher temp but less shear stable. However, it should hold up a little better if you make it a habbit to miss the 3,000 mile mark quite often due to its TBN of 7.0. 😉

Shell FormulaShell 10W-30:

VI = 137
PP = -36F
FP = 430F
HT/HS = 2.90
NOACK = 13%
TBN = 6.2

A little better.

Citgo Citgard 500 10W-30:

VI = 136
PP = -27F
FP = 417F
HT/HS = 3.30
NOACK = 13%
TBN = 8.0

Now we're talkin! Quite shear stable, with a very high TBN to fight those nasty combustion byproducts. Flash point could be better.

76 Lubricants Guardol QLT 10W-30:

VI = 135
PP = -33F
FP = 415F
HT/HS = 3.50
NOACK = 13%
TBN = 12

w00t! Even better! This oil should resist shearing quite well and should be able to fight combustion byproducts with the best of them.

Pennzoil Multigrade 10W-30

VI = 140
PP = -33F
FP = 430F
HT/HS = 3.20
NOACK = 13%
TBN = 5.0

Better than GTX 10W-30 in all ways.

Motorcraft Super Premium 10W-30:

VI = 139
PP = -31F
FP = 439F
HT/HS = 3.20
NOACK = 13%
TBN = 6.7

Wow! Now we're actually starting to get into the quality conventional oils! 😉

One of the best conventional oils money can buy?

Mobil1 Delvac 1300 Super 10W-30:
VI = 147
PP = -38F
FP = 439F
HT/HS = 3.60
NOACK = 13%
TBN = 11

Better(overall) than Mobil1 SuperSyn synthetic 10W-30 -

VI = 145
PP = -49F <--- gotta love synthetic
FP = 455F
HT/HS = 2.90
NOACK = 13%
TBN = 5.0

And just for the thread, as you can see.. the differences in specs between conventional oils are generally insignificant, especially when it comes to flash points. But there are those that stand above the rest.
